WF2004 (Australia) is virtual Round the World Flight conducted online in a privately owned Boeing 747-400 simulator departing on November 1st 2004 and arriving back in Sydney seven days later.
The organizers of WF2004 are raising money on behalf of the Royal Flying Doctor Service of Australia (RFDS) and will do this by conducting fund raising events and selling virtual tickets.
The RFDS was the first comprehensive aerial medical organisation in the world and to this day remains unique for the range of primary health care and emergency services it provides and for the huge area of sparse population and climatic extremes over which it operates - 24 hours a day, 365 days a year.
Donors to the WF2004 fund for the RFDS can enjoy a sense of participation by going to our booking system, selecting a flight that they would like to join and then choose the type of seat in First, Business or Economy sections. The prices vary in each section and you can pay as little as $5.00 to participate. Boarding passes are issued when a payment is made and you can go to the departure and arrival monitors to see if your flight is departing or arriving on time.
A world map is available and you can view the progress of the flight at any time of the day or night. Video monitoring of activities in the cockpit are planned and will be accessible via a streaming video system.
The 15 crew selected for the flight, which will take seven days and 40 sectors to complete, have undergone vigorous training in the months leading up to the departure and have become proficient in the operation of the Boeing 747-400 simulator both in terms of Crew Resource Management and Operational Procedures of the simulator.
Many of the crew will stay onsite for the seven days and one crew member is flying out from the UK to attend the Round the World flight.
Meals are prepared and supplied by Qantas Flight Catering and are served on the flight deck just as they would be on a real commercial flight.
A fully operational dispatch office and briefing room has been established and Aircrew are required to sign on with dispatch 60 minutes prior to their planned departure time. At this time they will be provided with their flight plan and documents and be fully briefed as to en route weather so that correct fuel loadings can be planned.
Actual real world weather is fed into the simulators systems so that they encounter exactly what weather is being experienced in that region they are passing through.
The crew will have no way of getting lost thanks to Jeppesen, providing up-to-date worldwide aeronautical charts for the event.
The flight will be conducted online on the Virtual Air Traffic control SIMulation network (www.vatsim.net) and live Air Traffic Control will be provided through most of the countries that we visit.
Seat sales are already in full swing and over AU$7,000 has already been pledged from private donations and fund raising events.
