    News:

London City Airport passenger numbers increase with 23%

Posted on Friday, January 25 @ 04:53:17 GMT by darklord

Aviation Industry News Passenger numbers at London City Airport reached a record high in 2007 with over 2.9 million people travelling to and from the only airport in London*.

London City Airport, the capital's only central airport located just six miles from the City of London, enjoyed a 23 per cent increase in passenger numbers compared with 2006.

Richard Gooding OBE, Chief Executive of London City Airport, said: "the airport had a great 2007. London City Airport's convenient location, combined with fast check-in and arrival processing times, appeals to time-poor business travellers. There is no doubt that passengers all across London and the South East are waking up to the options offered by this airport; not least the attractive five minutes taken to exit the terminal from the steps of the aircraft. New services commenced during the year to Belfast, Glasgow, Groningen, Madrid, Nice, Oslo and Vienna. Additionally, the Docklands Light Railway services that commenced in December 2005 have continued to prosper with over 50 per cent of all passengers now using the link."

In August 2007 London City Airport submitted a planning application to London Borough of Newham seeking an increase in flight movements to 120,000. This increase will create an additional 1,000 jobs at the airport site. London City Airport is already the largest private sector employment site in Newham with over 2,000 people, mostly from the local area, in full-time employment.

The popularity of London City Airport continues to grow, demonstrated by a number of new route announcements for 2008. The German national carrier, Lufthansa, will launch a twice-daily route to Berlin-Tegel Airport on 14 January, whilst British Airways will launch new routes to Nice, Barcelona, Warsaw and Amsterdam in the spring.

In line with the increase in passenger numbers and new routes introduced by airlines, London City Airport is investing some £30 million in constructing four new aircraft parking stands. The airport's departure lounge is also being reconfigured to allow for these additional passengers to be accommodated. Both projects are forecast for completion in spring 2008.

London City Airport is the UK's leading business airport with eleven airlines serving 33 destinations across the UK and Europe (as of the spring 2008 schedule).
