Here is a tip about using the scroll wheel in Firefox. It was taken from an article in PC World written by Rick Broida.
The scroll wheel is a major item on any mouse. It can be set to rapidly scroll through web pages or to move a few lines at a time. The article does not mention that this can be done by going to Windows Control Panel, selecting the mouse and then setting the number of lines each wheel click will handle. However the importance of this tip is the fact that the wheel can be adjusted within the Firefox program while on line. Also you do not have to leave Firefox to try the adjustment.
1. Open Firefox type "about.config" in the address bar and then hit enter.
2. A filter box appears and in this type "mousewheel.withnokey"
3. Right click "mousewheel.withnokey.sysnumlines" and then click "toggle". This should set the value to false.
4. Right click "mousewheel.withnokey.sysnumlines" and then click "modify". Put the value in the neighborhood of 6 or 7. Click OK and then switch to another tab, to see if you are satisfied with the scroll speed. If not you can experiment with another number until you are satisfied. (You do not have to leave Firefox every time you make a change)
5. After setting a satisfactory scroll speed, there may come a time when you wish to reduce the speed to a lower number or even 1 line at a time. This can be done by holding down the "Alternate Key". This drops Firefox back to line-at-a-time scrolling until the key is released
