It wasn’t too long ago that flight simulation joysticks were simple: Right, Left. Forward, Backward. But just like the advances in flight simulation software, joysticks have come a long way.

Now you can choose between a basic joystick with simple buttons to full-blown flightsticks that have multiple configurable buttons, read-out displays and designs that look like they just came off an intergalactic battle cruiser. Here are 5 different joysticks that will help you get more out of Microsoft FSX, X-Plane, and other top flight simulators.

Saitek X52 Pro Flight System Controller

The Saitek X52 Pro is a significant improvement over the original X52; better quality, better spring tension in the stick (due to dual springs), more metallic parts, and more sensors. The improvements bring this model in about $60 more.

With a HOTAS controller, users do not have to take their hands off the throttle or stick. The X52 Pro looks a little overwhelming to newbies, but they quickly adapt to it.

Custom Macros

It can take a while to set up the buttons with a particular flight sim, but once it's done it is comfortable and familiar. Profiles can be created for different programs and users. Macros can also be programmed. These are useful because one button can be used for many effects, handy when a maneuver has several facets that follow one right after another.

The stick may seem loose--too loose. But this is because it is very precise. Cheaper models are too stiff and require too much effort. The X52 Pro has a lot of touch and maneuverability. The initial setup is like a fighter plane, with the throttle on the left and the stick on the right. Users can switch it around like a general aircraft, with the stick on the left.

The controller uses a PS2 connection. One warning: The connection comes loose easily. If it comes out completely, it might reset the calibration settings, or even restart the game.

Multi-Function Display

The multi-function display on the throttle (MFD) shows important game play information in real time. Buttons, switches and controls can be programmed although the documentation on how to do it properly is a little thin.

The throttle is well designed for both maximum comfort on long flights and speedy response for sport or combat flying. There are two buttons set aside for MFD as well as two rotary dials with buttons that can be set to control game functions.

The data for the MFD comes directly from the game itself (including the Radio Stack in Flight Simulator 9 and 10). Want to create a custom program? Don’t worry--gearheads can use the Software Development Kit to create their own programs that communicate with the MFD.

Smooth and Tight

The joystick has a centering mechanism complete with non-contact construction on both the X-axis and Y-axis. The constant spring force keeps the action smooth and tight, providing accurate control and a longer life—no more watching the joystick droop over after a few months of hard flying.

The joystick has four fire buttons. There is also a missile launcher that comes complete with a spring-loaded safety cover which makes it easy to access quickly. A pinky switch allows the user to utilize twice the number of programmable commands.

In addition, there are two 8-way hat switches, a rotary mode selector with LED indicators, three base-mounted toggles with up to six programmable commands, a handle adjustment that fits all different hand sizes and a 3-D rudder twist. There is a 2-stage metal trigger on the joystick as well as easy access to two primary buttons.

Throttle Tension

The throttle tension can be adjusted to individual settings, and has detents for idle and afterburner as well as two fire buttons. There is a scroll wheel with a button built-in, eight way hat switch, slider control, a mouse controller/hat switch with left mouse button functionality, and two rotary controls.

There is also a clutch button that allows the user to enter in "safe mode," which allows profile selection in flight, or to figure out which button does what without actually activating any of them.

The Saitek X52 Pro is approved for Windows versions including XP, XP64, all versions of Vista and Windows 7. It is a great blend of ergonomics, technology, aesthetics and value pricing. It will provide lots of flying fun for many years.

You can order yours and view more images/manufacturers description over at Amazon here.

Mad Catz V.1 Stick

The Mad Catz V.1 Stick is a great-looking basic joystick that provides plenty of control at a reasonable price. The ergonomic stick has a trigger and five buttons that are positioned for rapid access. It can be handled with either hand with equal effectiveness.

Enemy Combatants

Users can change cockpit views to keep track of enemy combatants with a quick flick of the POV switch. Control of the engine is smooth and easy with the throttle lever. Rudder control is handled with a simple twist action.

While much lighter than many of its competitors, its rubber pads effectively keep it stuck in place. The legs can be removed from the unit and store easily.

The unit is very lightweight, has precise controls and a rapid-fire trigger. The rudder (Z-axis) works by rotating the stick to each side. You cannot configure the twist action, but the other controls are easy to adjust. The spring is a little stiff but becomes less so over time.

Quick Access

With plenty of buttons, it performs exceptionally. There are seven buttons across the top, with access to 13 using the pinky button as a shift control. There is no extra clutter and users have convenient access to the buttons.

The throttle lever is on the base. It is very sensitive and does not take much effort to regulate. There is a hat switch in the middle and buttons positioned out around the thumb. This layout will not appeal to those who prefer the buttons on the base. Also, the pinky button is a little too easy to bump accidentally.

The unit is compatible with all Windows configurations including XP, XP 64, Vista, Windows 7 and Windows 8. It comes complete with Saitek SST software, which allows extensive array of programming options.

Durable Value

While there are more expensive options, the Mad Catz V.1 Stick is an excellent basic joystick for flight simulation. It is durable; made with tough plastic and good quality construction.

This is the perfect introductory-level stick for flight simulation like Microsoft FSX and X-Plane--it works with many popular flight simulation titles. With a comfortable grip, useful software, sleek design and great price, the Mad Catz V.1 Stick should be on every flight simmer’s short list.

You can order yours and view more images/manufacturers description over at Amazon here.

CH Products FlightStick Pro USB

The CH Products FlightStick Pro USB is great for flight simmers looking for something a little better than an entry level product, but without breaking the bank. This is high-quality mid-range joystick that offers maximum value.

Plug-and-Play

It has four push buttons and one 8-way POV hat switch. The control manager software provides 22 different programmable functions. The grip can be used effectively with either left or right hands, and works right away as soon as is it is unpackaged. Users do not need to download drivers or add any other software.

It is a plug-and-play system. Unlike other flight sticks, the base is heavy enough that the unit will not move around on the table or desk. At the same time it is small enough that it can be set aside without taking up too much room.

With an exact amount of spring load, it fits perfectly in the hand, and is very tactile and precise. The buttons are responsive and within easy reach of fingers. One drawback for some users may be that there is not a twist access for rudder.

Solid Quality

CH Products flight sticks are very stable. They do not need a lot of calibration and do not lose their settings. It takes almost no effort to get response along both the X and Y axes. With simple, solid quality, this is one of the few mid-range joysticks that is equally comfortable in either hand.

The CH Products Flight Stick Pro USB is made of quality construction, tough material and is compatible with Windows versions 98, and ME, 2000, XP, Vista and Windows 7 on the PC as well as Mac OS 8.6 with Input Sprockets 1.7 X for Mac.

You can order yours and view more images/manufacturers description over at Amazon here.

Thrustmaster Hotas Warthog

How is this for user involvement in product development? Thrustmaster teamed up with some of their loyal customers, working with their suggestions and feedback to create the Hotas Warthog, a replica of the A10C, an attack plane in the U.S. Air Force. The result is a top-of-the-line flightstick for serious flight simmers that want the best.

Heavy Metal

Unlike most gaming joysticks, the Warthog is heavy. Tipping the scales at more than 14 pounds, the throttle handles, base and joystick are all made of metal. There are two four-direction hat switches and 55 action buttons that are completely programmable by the user.

The joystick itself has 19 action buttons, as well as a hat dedicated to POV. The magnetic sensor system provides extreme touch and precision. It is designed to reflect the actual pressure a pilot would use on the buttons, switches and triggers in the actual aircraft.

The joystick handle is completely detachable. This allows users to place it on the base of the HOTAS Cougar, another Thrustmaster product. The base also comes off the unit as well, making it simple to drop the joystick in a cockpit.

Dual Throttle

The dual throttle has a locking system that allows the user to keep the throttles together or work them independently. Magnetic sensors on each throttle provide unparalleled precision. The afterburner can be disengaged. This lets the user adapt the throttle to each different aircraft. The throttles are packed with 17 action buttons, a "mouse hat/slew control" and a POV hat.

The control panel has a wide variety of controls including a friction wheel, back lighting for functions and five programmable LED lights which are very useful in lowlight operating conditions. The base of the unit has 15 action buttons and the trim wheel.

One of the most powerful features of the warthog is the TARGET (Thrustmaster Advanced Programming Graphical Editor) software. It lets users configure each Thrustmaster controller, primarily the Warthog but also the HOTAS Cougar, MFD Cougar and the T.16000. Three distinct programming configurations include Basic Advanced and Script, a scripting language that provides unlimited functionality.

This flightstick was designed by simmers, for simmers. For users that have cut their teeth and are ready to move up, the Warthog is ready and waiting.

You can order yours and view more images/manufacturers description over at Amazon here.

Mad Catz F.L.Y 5 Flight Stick

A significant upgrade from earlier models, the F.L.Y 5 Flight Stick provides even more functionality, configurability and performance. The high-quality, three-toned matte plastic and stainless steel is an indication of the commitment to excellence behind its construction.

It features twin throttles with fully programmable controls. The length and tilt of both the joystick and head can be manipulated to help find the perfect setting for different seating positions and hand size.

Light and Smooth

The base has pads for gripping; however the unit is very light. The joystick centers itself smoothly every time thanks to a shallow disk located inside a central cone, which provides even movement on both the X and Y axes. The joystick handle can be removed which makes it easier to store the unit.

The twin throttle lets users assign different engines to each throttle, or program the unit so that one throttle lever manipulates a function such as flap control or elevator trim. The POV hat switches are completely adjustable as is the joystick handle height, which can be raised or lowered to fit different and sizes. The handle angle can be adjusted for players that prefer it stands straight up during play, or leans forward.

Rudder Twist

There are 12 buttons readily available which include all the central combat and flying commands, and a rotating trim wheel located near the weapon switches. Rudders are controlled by twisting the stick itself.

Using the Saitek SST software, users can increase the number of programmable buttons. The buttons can be used to configure throttling, brakes, lights, view switching, flap adjustments, landing gear and more.

The trigger and four thumb buttons are configured at the top of the stick, as are a scroll wheel and hat switch. There are four additional buttons on the base which are manipulated by the left thumb. The Shift button, located directly behind the stick, is a little harder to get to. It allows users to alter layouts and assign additional commands to buttons.

The joystick itself has forward, backward and twist axes. The thick spring takes a little effort to put into position, which may take a little getting used to for some users. A strong screw collar keeps the whole spring unit in place.

Highly Customizable

There are four adjustments that can be made to adapt the joystick to that. This high level of customization helps the F.L.Y 5 stand out from its competition. Users can change the overall angle up to 40° forward. The joystick length can be increased 20 cm. The head tilt can be adjusted 30° backwards.

In addition, the buttons on the head unit slide forwards and backwards, and can be locked down with a screw once the optimal position is located. The adjustments are made with a small adjustment tool that is essentially a hex screwdriver with a special pin on one end. It stores right in the base of the unit.

It is unusual to see dual throttles on a joystick of this price range. Two throttles are handy in many situations--in helicopter flying where one of the throttles can be used instead of foot pedals, for example.

The F.L.Y 5 Flight Stick works extremely well with FSX. System requirements include USB 1.1/2.0 ports on Windows XP, XP 64, Vista or Windows 7 platforms.

The right joystick adds a lot of fun and excitement to flight simulation. At the same time, it helps users improve their flying skills by providing fast access to common functions, macro functions to speed up critical events, and incredible feedback to enhance feel and control. Whatever the price range, one of the joysticks in our list will make everyone a better pilot.

Braniff International Airways was an innovative, forward-thinking, iconic American airline that started many trends in the airline industry, several of which are still being utilized today.

Operating from 1930 through 1982, Braniff flew routes throughout the middle and southwestern portions of the United States, as well as Panama, South America, Europe and Asia. The “perfect storm” of increased competition, overexpansion and extremely high fuel prices forced the company to shut down on May 12, 1982.

Braniff International is creating the most beautiful airline in the world. We hired Emilio Pucci to design our uniforms. Our hostesses wear reversible coats of almond green and apricot, space helmets to keep out the rain, red spacesuits and sometimes something a little more comfortable... We have blue planes, orange planes, yellow planes… You can fly with us seven times and never fly the same color twice... Braniff international announces The End of the Plain Plane. We won't get you where you're going any faster, but it'll seem that way. - 1960s Braniff TV Commercial

The original Braniff airline operation was known as Tulsa–Oklahoma City Airways. It was started by Thomas E. Braniff, an insurance salesman and financial executive. Teaming up with his brother, Paul Revere Braniff, they offered passenger service throughout Oklahoma. Ultimately, ownership in the company was given up and it was purchased by aviation Corporation (AVCO) holding company. AVCO also owned other airline assets including what was to become eventually American Airlines.

Braniff Airways

Free of the burden of their original venture, Thomas and Paul Braniff started up a new airline called Braniff Airways, Incorporated. They slowly expanded through the Midwest. In a bid to get the Chicago – Dallas airmail route, Paul Braniff presented the airline's case in Washington DC. With the blowback from the famous 1934 Airmail Scandal fresh on their minds, the United States Post Office gave them the Chicago – Dallas route in 1935. Paul Braniff left the company later that year while Tom Braniff stayed to run the company. He hired Charles "Chuck" Beard to take over the daily tasks of running a growing airline. Beard eventually was named President And Chief Executive Officer of the company in 1954.

Braniff absorbed several smaller airlines as it grew. In addition, they purchased new aircraft including Douglas DC–2s and Douglas DC–3s. They concentrated their routes in the Midwest. During the Second World War they leased airplanes to the military and offered their facilities in Dallas to help train pilots. In the 40s, the company began to serve routes in the Caribbean as well as Central and South America, often flying Douglas DC-6s on these flights.

Nationwide Expansion

The company began to expand nationwide in the 1950s. They purchased Midcontinent Airlines which added several cities to their primarily North-South system. Along with their added routes, in 1957 the company christened a new building close to Dallas Love Field. It served as their headquarters until they moved to Braniff Place in 1978.

Braniff at Love Field

In 1954, Thomas Braniff was killed when the “flying boat” he was in crashed near Wallace Lake in Louisiana. His hunting party was leaving the lake when the wings iced over and the pilot attempted to bring the plane back down. Unfortunately, one of the wings hit tree stumps which caused the plane to crash and catch fire. All 12 passengers were lost.

1954 was not a great year for Braniff. Paul Braniff died that year from cancer. After Tom's death, Chuck Beard became the president, the first non-Braniff family member to hold that position. He was instrumental in steering the company into the modern age: By 1965 he transitioned almost the entire fleet to jets.

Great America Corporation

Braniff was acquired by the Great America Corporation in 1965. C. Edward Acker, Chief Financial Officer of Great America claimed that Braniff was a poorly managed company, and he stepped into the role of Executive Vice President and Chief Financial Officer.

Also in 1965, the airline hired Harding L. Lawrence, at the time an Executive VP of Continental Airlines. He became the new President of Braniff international. He felt that the airline was somewhat backwards and wanted to give them a new, modern image. Over the next decade and half he expanded the company into new markets and tried unorthodox ideas. The result was significant financial gains: The airline multiplied its earnings 10 times in that time period.

Mary Wells

As part of the modernization effort, the company enlisted the help of Jack Tinker Associates, who put fast rising advertising whiz kid Mary Wells on the case. She is better known as Mary Wells Lawrence, having married Lawrence in 1967 in Paris.

Their first goal was to change Braniff’s image. The Airlines livery consisted of traditional red, white and blue colorings which the advertising firm thought was boring. They called on the talents of fashion designer Emilio Pucci, shoe designer Beth Levine and architect Alexander Girard to make a wholesale change in the companies branding. This was called the "End of the Plain Plane."

Jellybean Fleet

One of the more dramatic changes was based on Girard's suggestion that they use a single bright color on each aircraft. His goal was to cover each plane in exotic colors like "metallic purple." The company modified this design with white wings and tails, which recalled a paint profile from the 1930s called the Braniff Vegas scheme. Nicknamed the "jellybean" fleet, the new colors included turquoise, lemon yellow and lavender. Interestingly, lavender was discontinued as it is a bad luck color in Mexico.

The interiors received as dramatic a change as the exteriors. Girard covered the seats with Herman Miller fabrics. He also created a new line of furniture for the ticket areas and lounges. Braniff offered the same furniture for sale to the public in 1967 for that year only. The exotic color schemes were carried from the airplane exteriors to the gate areas, ticket offices and the company headquarters as well. The walls featured complementary art from around the world.

Hostess Service

Not to be outdone, Pucci made major changes in the crew uniforms. Beth Levine came up with two tone boots and shoes. The moniker "stewardess" was changed in favor of the word "hostess."

The creativity of the new designs infiltrated the next batch of advertising as well. Mary Wells brought in celebrities like Sonny Liston, Salvador Dali and Andy Warhol in a stylish, some say "arrogant" campaign that was unlike any other marketing effort of the era. One tagline read, "if you've got it – flaunt it!"

Hostesses began a tradition of removing outerwear on board, calling it the "Air Strip," which was featured in one of their commercials (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MKiVCkE0dDw). The airline loved the new campaigns, but many corporate accounts were outraged and ended their relationship with Braniff.

Jet Aircraft

In 1959 Braniff used Boeing 707-227's as well as the 707-200. In 1971, they sold off the 707-227s and 720s were purchased. In 1964, they acquired a BAC One-Eleven twin jet. By the middle of the decade, they had a fleet comprised of almost all jets. When Lawrence took over the company, he stopped buying BACs, instead selecting bigger Boeing 727s.

After that, they ordered several Boeing 727s including the elongated B727-200, and the 727-200 Advanced. Near the end of the 1960s, the company had ceased operation of all their Lockheed L-188 Elektra turboprops, which made them an "all jet" airline. In the 1970s, they concentrated on the Boeing 727. The inventory consisted of 70 B727s, a single B747 and a clutch of 11 DC-8s.

Concorde Travel

Braniff offered Concorde service in 1979, flying out of the United States from Dallas to Washington DC, and then on to London and Paris, with interchange flights offered by partners British Airways and Air France. American crews handled all the flights from Dallas to Washington, DC, and British and French staff handled the Washington to Europe leg. Over the United States, the government limited the Concorde to Mach 0.95. Once they had open water however, they cranked it up to Mach 2.

The Braniff Branded Concorde.

Ultimately, the Concorde was a financial noose around the neck of the airline. Although Braniff offered extremely reasonable rates, they were usually only able to fill 15 of the 100 seats on the Concorde. At the same time, they flew Boeing 727s over similar routes that were filled to capacity. As a result, the Concorde experiment only lasted about a year. Many postcards from the era depict a Concorde with Braniff livery. However, this never took place in reality, as the Concorde only featured liveries from Air France and British Airways during its lifetime.

Terminal of the Future

In the mid-60s, Braniff took over the operations of Pan-American Grace Airways (PANAGRA), which strengthened their operations in South America. The company was also active in taking Vietnam military to Hawaii for their furloughs during the war. The company's commitment to cutting-edge thinking continued when they opened their "Terminal of the Future."

The Braniff Jetrail System

Other modern concepts the company was involved in included Jet Rail, a fully automated monorail system. Braniff executives also made significant contributions to the planning and design of the new Dallas-Fort Worth international Airport, providing many creative new ideas never seen before in the airline industry.

Calder Liveries

Another example of their cutting-edge thinking was in 1973 when the airline asked Alexander Calder to create a specially commissioned paint scheme. His "Flying Colors" Douglas DC-8 was immediately controversial. Showcased at Paris Air Show, it featured very bright colors common to Latin countries. As such, it was primarily used in South America. Two years later, he created "Flying Colors of the United States," a Boeing 727-200 which was commissioned to help celebrate the United States Bicentennial. A year later, Calder died as he was finishing another livery called "Flying Colors of Mexico," which was ultimately not used on any aircraft.

Calder's "Flying Colors" DC-8

In the late 1970s, the company ended their relationship with Pucci as the uniform designer. Instead, they enlisted the help of fashion icon Halston, who returned the company's designs to a more American-influenced style. Known for his all-leather designs, they were used for uniforms and airplane interiors alike, including new Boeing 727 – 200s. His simple fashions were a hit with both the flying public and industry pundits.

"747 Braniff Place"

The company had the honor of taking delivery of the 100th Boeing 747 ever made. It was a 747 -127, which kicked off the "jumbo jet" era. Marketing campaigns called the aircraft "747 Braniff Place" or "The Most Exclusive Address In The Sky." It was used in the first flight out of Dallas to London. Other 747s, like the 747 SP were used to fly to Europe and Asia. The old Douglas DC-8s were beginning to show their age. The company debated whether to buy McDonnell Douglas MD-80s to replace them, or opt for Boeing 757s or 767s. Financial difficulties later made the debate mute.

Through the 1970s, Braniff was one of the most successful airlines. It was hit hard by the regulation of the American airline business in the late 70s. Company leadership chose to expand in response to the regulation. They added several new cities and routes-- it was believed to be the biggest single day expansion by any airline ever. They created international hubs in both Los Angeles and Boston to take on increased loads on the international front. They had plans to establish routes to Tokyo as well as an "energy run" in between the oil capitals of Dallas, Houston and Dubai. Ultimately, these international routes never came to fruition.

Downhill Slide

Things went downhill from there. Despite many new routes and destinations, Braniff was unable to develop much new business. The 747 flights out of international hubs were not going according to plan, often flying almost empty. The cost of acquiring the goods and equipment needed to support all of the new hubs added significant debt to company balance sheets. In addition, the move of flight operations to the Dallas-Fort Worth airport added even more debt. Then they moved their headquarters to the brand-new Braniff Place. The combination of rapid expansion, seriously increased debt and a debilitating recession resulted in Harding Lawrence being removed from his position in late 1980.

In 1982, Howard Putnam made an unsuccessful attempt to get relief from creditors and gain an extension on outstanding debts that had grown tremendously while Harding Lawrence was in power. After failing to get an extension, the company stopped all business, which marked the end of 54 years of continual operation. Flights out of Dallas never left the ground, and passengers already sitting on jets ready to depart were asked to leave the aircraft. In a last show of independence and defiance, Braniff Flight 501 departed without authorization to Honolulu, and did not listen to further orders to land in Los Angeles.

Out of the Ruins

Several airlines were born from the ruins of Braniff Airlines. Some employees created Sun Country Airlines which featured a collection of Boeing 727-200s and DC-10s. The airline lasted from 1983 through 2001, at which point it had to reorganize and now offers flights on Boeing 737-800s.

The Hyatt Corporation founded Braniff Incorporated in 1983 but its finances ran out at the beginning of the 1990s and it ended operations. Financial executive Jeffrey Chodorow started Braniff International Airlines, Incorporated in 1991 using the assets of the failed Braniff Incorporated (which was under the corporate name of "Dalfort.") That initiative ended in 1992 due to malfeasance.

Two other attempts were made to start an airline operation using the Braniff name in some capacity. One concern had the goal of using Boeing 757s and another outfit wanted to offer discount tickets to an exclusive "Braniff club." Neither of these ideas gained any steam.

Any assets of the original Braniff are handled by a firm called "Asworth," created out of what was left of the original "Dalfort" Corporation. At exists mainly to make sure pilot pensions are paid.

Legions of Fans

Braniff Airlines continues to capture the imagination of aviation, marketing, design and innovation enthusiasts around the world. Appreciation sites like Braniff International Historical Site celebrate the independent spirit of the airline.

There are also several videos on YouTube detailing the history of the company in images and music (https://www.youtube.com/user/BraniffPages).

The book "Splash of Colors-the Self-Destruction of Braniff International" has a 4.8 out of 5 stars rating at Amazon.com. It sells “new” for almost $100, a reflection of the continuing interest and appreciation for Braniff's contribution to the aviation industry. The book details the drama and intrigue behind the scenes as the company over expanded and then tried to correct itself after deregulation.

Braniff captures people's imagination much like the Concorde does. Both represent a time in the airline industry when everything seemed possible. Braniff evolved along with America itself, moving from the homogenization of the 1950s to a new world of experimentation and innovation in the 1960s.

Looking back, many of the designs and ideas seem too "far out," even in today's world. It doesn't matter. The joy and energy of the liveries, interiors, and crew uniforms was a perfect match for the increasing profitability and efficiency of the airline operation. For many, Braniff represents the fun of air travel in a much simpler time.

Turbine Sound Studios has released a new product – the TSS Embraer 190 CF34 HD Sound pack for FS2004 and FSX.

The General Electric CF34 is used on several jet airliners, including the Embraer E-Jets, and the Bombardier CRJ. Although the original engines consisted of a single stage fan powered by a 4-stage LP turbine, later versions had higher thrust and advanced technology.

The main good points about this sound pack are

It is an accurate representation of the GE CF-34-10E engines – it is a compilation of all the best sound moments of the engines.

The engine sound quality is superb – they were recorded within close proximity to the engines of Flybe 190's and KLM.

Although it was developed specifically for the Wilco/feelThere Embraer 190, this sound pack can also be used with other add-ons. However, some variations may be noticed on other add-ons.

In addition to the engine sounds recordings, the sound pack also features custom gear, wind, flap, autopilot and stall. This sound pack enhances the realism of the simulation experience, complete with ambient cockpit and wheel rumble sounds. This package also features an optional APU sound.

Since its inception 5 years ago, Turbine Sound Studios has constantly released high quality sound packages for Microsoft Flight Simulator X and Microsoft Flight Simulator 2004.

Founded by Christoffer Petersen, the company uses top quality recordings of real aircraft to create sound packages that enhance the simulation experience. Over the years, TSS has designed a wide range of sound packs, including:

Dash 8 HD Sound Pack

Boeing 707 PW JT3D Sound Pack

737 CFM56-7b HD

Airbus 3XX IAE-V2500 HD Sound Pack

Reviews

Several people who have purchased F.L.Y. 9 Wireless Flight Stick from Amazon are pleased with its performance.

A review by a product user Beau Braunberger, says,

This flight stick has a great design. Most of the important fit paramaters (height, rake angle, head angle) are adjustable to make it quite comfortable to use. The button placement is great for the games that it is compatible with. My complaint is that there is too much of a dead-zone when moving the stick. If you are trying to make minor adjustments, the stick has to be pushed well outside of the center position before any movement registers. This makes fine control during these games difficult. Overall, this is an awesome product idea; it would be much more user friendly if the movement tracking was more sensitive when making small motions.

Another User, David Stone, says,

If you want a flight stick for your games, this is the one to get. Set up is a little difficult, since it tells you to hit the connect button on the Xbox and the controller, but it doesn't show where the connect button is (on the bottom with 3 little white arcs above it). Once connected it is a pleasure to use, and adjustable to fit any size hand. Be sure to get a battery charger and some rechargeable AA batteries because it does not use a charger or a cord.

Alabeo's Piper PA-36 Pawnee Brave 375: A Review

White Knuckle Crop Dusting Fun: Piper PA-36 Pawnee Brave 375 for FSX/Prepar3D. You drop in low over the field of neat rows of soybeans waiting patiently. A crosswind is threatening to take you off course. Pulling your eyes up from the instrument panel, you take a deep breath and remind yourself to trust your instincts. This isn't like flying a jumbo jet into a giant airport. This is crop dusting, one of the last frontiers of seat-of-the-pants flying. The low passes and sharp turns demand exacting flying skills. Many jumbo jet pilots can’t handle it.

As you cross the border of the field, you hit the control to activate the hopper. For soybeans, covering the surface area of each plant is critical. Contact chemicals typically protect a small area of the plant, so even spraying of each row is necessary to get full protection. Plus, certain fungicides spray better at lower flying speeds. That means you can’t rush. You look out the side window as the spray bursts out of the nozzles and showers the plants below.

This kind of flying takes patience, skill, precision, and guts. It's not as easy as it looks from the ground. You don't want to skid in the turns (too much rudder) or slipstream (not enough rudder). You are fighting crosswinds, updrafts, and tailwinds. Oh, and don't forget that power line at the other end of the field. You'll have to miss that at the very last second--on every run. If not, it may be the end of your career. Not to mention the demise of a very special airplane.

Piper PA-36 Pawnee Brave 375

Alabeo's Piper PA-36 Pawnee Brave 375 for FSX/Prepar3D is a flight sim add-on built from the ground up to deliver maximum fun for pilots. It captures the unique thrills and fun of crop dusting. The PA-36 is a utility aircraft that turned out to be great at agricultural flying, which it did for many years before it was put out to pasture. Alabeo also released the C118B crop-duster add-on which you can read our review here and purchase here.

The Piper PA-36 Pawnee Brave is a low-wing, single-engine airplane originally created in the late 1960s at Piper’s facility in Vero Beach. It is propeller driven and was conceived as a big brother to Piper’s first agricultural aircraft: The PA-25 Pawnee. It had better ventilation and heating, a better wing and a bigger hopper, as well as an optional hopper that was even larger.

Top Speed

It had a top speed of 142 mi./h (229 km/h) and could cruise at 136 mi./h (219 km/h) with a range of 452 miles (727 km). Its rate of climb was 920 ft./m (4.7 m/s). It could only carry one crewmember and had a payload of 38 cubic feet ft capacity in the hopper tank. That is the equivalent of 275 US Gallons (1,041 L) of liquids or 2,200 lb (998 kg) of dry chemicals.

The length of the PA-36 is 27-feet, 6-inches (8.38 m) and it has a wingspan of 38-feet, 9½- inches (11.82 m). It is only 7-feet, 6-inches (2.29 m) tall with a wing area of 225.65 ft² (20.96 m²). The airfoil is NACA 633-618 and the weight when completely empty is 2,465 lb. (1,118 kg). Its maximum takeoff weight is 4,800 lb (2,177 kg).

The very first PA-36 model known as the PA-36-260 Pawnee II, featured a 195 kW (260 hp) Lycoming O-540-E engine which made its initial flight on 17 November 1969. Later in the evolution of the program, the Lycoming engine was switched out for a 210 kW (285 hp) Continental Tiara 6-285 engine. At that point, the airplane became the PA-36-285. After they used the same engine in another prototype, Piper made the decision to incorporate this powerplant in the production runs of the entire series.

Front Hopper Design

The PA-36 featured a chrome-molybdenum steel fuselage with under-skins made of metal and side panels constructed of plastic. The wings are a two-part structure made of light alloy laminated spars and covered with a light alloy. The wingtips and leading edges are covered with a glass fiber. In front of the pilot sits a hopper that has a 30 (or 38) cubic-foot capacity.

In the early 1970s, the PA-36-285 garnered approval from the FAA and began production. At the same time, the company changed the name from Pawnee II to the more dramatic name of Pawnee Brave. After some difficulties with the Continental Tiara engine, Piper enlisted a 225 kW (300 hp) Lycoming IO-540 powered model called the PA-36-3000. It took the place of the Continental Tiara engine from 1977 onward.

Beginning in the 1978 model year, the company revised the name Pawnee Brave to Brave 300. Also that year, a bigger version of the engine was made available. It was a 280 kW (375 hp) Lycoming IO-720 called the Brave 375.

WTA Incorporated

In 1981, WTA Incorporated bought all of the rights to the design. Beginning in 1982, they used the 300 kW (400 hp) ITIL-720 and dubbed it the New Brave 400. The Brave 375 became the New Brave 375. In January of 1983, the company shut down production of the Pawnee Brave completely. They were able to sell 175 New Brave models by the end of 1987.

Here is a list of the variations over the years:

PA-36 Pawnee II – This was a prototype that was driven by a Lycoming 260hp power plant.

PA-36-285 Pawnee Brave – It started out as a production model--powered by a Continental Tiara 6-285 285 hp piston motor.

PA-36-300 Pawnee Brave 300 – Featured an Avco Lycoming IO-540-K1G5 300 hp power plant. After 1978 it became the Brave 300.

PA-36-375 Brave 375 – Another variation this time with an Avco Lycoming IO-720-D1CD 375 hp engine.

PA-36 New Brave 375 – The first model from WTA Incorporated, this variation was driven by a 375 hp piston engine.

PA-36 New Brave 400 – The big brother of the New Brave 375, this model featured a bigger 400 hp piston engine.

Agricultural Aircraft

Other aircraft that were used for agricultural purposes included the Cessna Ag-wagon, PAC Fletcher, Gippsland GA200, Embraer EMB 202 Ipanema, and Grumman Ag Cat. In some parts of the country, helicopters were also used extensively.

Crop dusting by air first came on the scene in the 1920s. The original planes were biplanes from the war that were converted for agricultural use. Examples include the Stearman and the De Havilland Tiger Moth. Eventually, the biplanes were switched out for specially built fixed wing aircraft designed specifically for agricultural crop dusting.

In fact, several large airlines began as crop dusting services. Huff-Daland Dusters was the first organized company in the industry. They operated out of Monroe, Louisiana and dusted cotton crops along the Mississippi Delta.

South America

In the off-season they found work down in South America. This experience led to being hired to deliver mail over the Andes from Peru to Ecuador and back. Before long, they jettisoned the crop dusting service. C.E. Woolman took over and changed their name to Delta Air Service. Two years later, they started carrying passengers from Dallas, Texas to cities in Mississippi and Louisiana. Eventually, they changed their name to Delta Air Lines. Delta had two of the original 18 Dusters in storage. In 1967, they selected one for full restoration.

Agricultural planes are small, handle well, and are made to withstand lots of use. Typically, chemical spray systems are fixed to the edge of the wing. In some parts of the world where large farms are common, bigger aircraft have been used. Examples include the turboprop PAC Cresco, the turbofan-powered WSK-Mielec M-15 Belphegor and the twin-engine Lockheed Lodestar.

Most crop dusting planes have a short takeoff and landing design (STOL). When helicopters are used, the tanks are arranged outside the body of the chopper. The spray rig extends outward from the body and is fixed to the aircraft safely below the main rotor. When used for hydro seeding, helicopters often use similar systems to those used for aerial firefighting.

Easy Download

Alabeo's Piper PA-36 Pawnee Brave 375 for FSX/Prepar3D product files are not large and downloading is easy. There are three separate files: The program file, a mission file and a corresponding scenery file. Alabeo shows their commitment to various flight sim platforms by creating versions of the Brave 375 for both Flight Simulator X and Prepar3D at no extra charge. For consistency, the comments in this article will refer to the FSX edition.

There are two aircraft models: The original PA36 without spraying gear and another one complete with all the spraying equipment. For the uninitiated, crop dusters fly low over farm crops and disburse chemicals and other agents needed to help the crops stay healthy and grow better. The spraying equipment includes the sprayers along the wings as well as a hopper which stores the chemical agent and allows it to flow to the spray nozzles.

The pilot can add material to the hopper. A green tinted readout indicates the pounds of chemicals left on a sight bar as well as a percentage readout. It's not the most realistic rendering, but it provides another element that increases pilot engagement.

Gorgeous Textures

Alabeo provides 11 paints schemes in the package. Each is a relatively faithful reproduction of the real-world versions. Alabeo has done an exceptional job on the textures for the PA-36. In addition, the models are very realistic with rock solid animation such as cockpit doors, tail wheel, gear suspension, propeller and control surface.

Pilots can actuate the crop spray effect by clicking the "I" key. Unfortunately, it does not change the flight dynamics appreciably, which you might feel to a certain extent out in the real aircraft as the payload was disbursed.

One commenter on FlightSim named “normac” said, “It's really disappointing that an aircraft like this can't simulate the change of weight and centre of gravity and therefore the change of flight characteristics as it loses its load of fertilizer or pesticide. It seems rather pointless simulating releasing the load if it has no impact.” Nonetheless, it is a welcome feature and part of the fun of crop dusting. (If you want to get fancy, crop dusting is also called "aerial topdressing.")

Accurate Cockpit

The realism of the outside textures and unique model characteristic extends to the cockpit. There is no 2D version, so pilots will move right into virtual cockpit (VC) mode. Looking around the interior, it is clear that Alabeo did their homework. Each gauge, control, and pedal looks very realistic. Everything is crisp and sharp with a real-world feel. As you can imagine, crop dusters have limited instrumentation and these are clear and accurate. Because of Alabeo's eye for detail, pilots will enjoy flicking the various controls, switches, and buttons.

The quality continues in the engine sounds. The motor is clear and strong, providing the reliable sound of a work-horse aircraft. However, not everyone agrees. Some people have commented they didn't find the sound accurate. "Iflygary" said on FlightSim.com, "I actually sent Alabeo an email highlighting the fact that this aircraft's sound is nowhere near correct. Real life Piper Braves engines have a distinct “putt, putt, putt" sound. While their textures are extremely amazing and well done, what a deal this aircraft is considering its low price. I would have to give them a 4/5 as well. (Btw, I grew up seeing and hearing Piper Braves so that's how I knew about the sound). "

The scenery attached to the mission consists of a relatively small airfield as well as some out-buildings, stationary PA-36s on the ground, and a virgin field ready to be sprayed. Once underway, pilots will encounter a waypoint compass on the way to the field, and be able to fly several gates.

There is a clock on-screen that indicates the time spent spraying. There are no awards to be won. You are a crop-duster pilot, not an air exhibition specialist. The mission itself is not very long. Most pilots can probably complete it less than 15 minutes. The trick is to maintain the low altitude and return to the airfield intact.

Bottom Line

The PA-36 is a good example of the fun and unique products coming out of Alabeo. The company has done a good job focusing on maximum fun in their flight simulation titles. The developers are young and open to taking risks that more established players might avoid. Their modelers, pilots, aviation pros, and designers work closely together to develop entertaining and engaging flight sims.

With the Piper PA-36 Pawnee Brave 375 for FSX/Prepar3D, they continue the tradition. This is a small, agile airplane that is perfect for the demands of crop dusting. For pilots without a lot of time to fly simulators, it is the perfect aircraft to take a quick jaunt out over a field, drop some chemicals and buzz back home. The gorgeous textures and realistic cockpit controls add to the experience. This work plane is loads of fun, on or off the job.

X-Plane v10.20 Released (64-bit mode)

Laminar Research, the developers of X-Plane have announced the release of an updated version, 10.20. This update brings a few new features to the table, in particular the binary has been updated to support 64-bit mode.

Announced on March 4th by Laminar Research (the developers of X-Plane), version 10.20 is released with immediate effect. Existing users of X-Plane can easily update to the latest version using the automatic updated program that comes bundled with the software - it should notify you on the next launch of the software.

This new version enables 64-bit on the software, making full use of modern computer systems that support this mode. The main benefit of utilizing the 64-bit system is that X-Plane has access to more memory (RAM) and can store cached files/data there more readily. Most computer systems come with greater than 4GB of RAM and this upgrade breaks the limit of 4GB for systems not using PAE. This update will only allow you to run 64-bit mode if you are already running a 64-bit operating system as the base; i.e. if you are running Windows in 32-bit mode, this upgrade will be of no benefit and X-Plane will also run in 32-bit mode.

This enables X-Plane fans to really open up the application to their entire memory stores. To be honest (I may be wrong), but I'm sure that my copy of X-Plane running on Mac OS X already ran in 64-bit mode. Having said that, I may have already applied the update before I noticed this. If you're running OS X, you can check if X-Plane is running in 64-bit mode by loading up "Activity Monitor" and checking there...

See this image as an example:

This update will come as a great relief to many users of the software that are now running high resolution textures, lots of complex aircraft models and higher scenery settings. In fact, when you apply the update you may notice that everything seems to run a lot smoother and load quicker when doing long distance flying.

I will mention that this update will probably not increase your frame rates significantly; this is mainly because the update changes nothing on your GPU (graphics card) - so don't expect faster frame rates. However, I'd love to hear your comments below as to whether there was a major performance increase for you.

Increasing the amount of buildings, trees, shadows and terrain textures is really limited to the performance specifications of your graphics card. The faster the processor on your GPU and the more video RAM available on the card, the higher you should be able to set all of these options.

You can grab your copy of X-Plane from any good retailer and of course we have it for sale over at SimShack.net too (with worldwide shipping). Once you install the DVD version, you can update to this 10.20 release after your first load.

Enjoy 64-bit mode!

Aerosoft Has Released Lelystad X

Aerosoft has a solid reputation in designing and publishing superior airport add-ones, and their newest product, Lelystad X, upholds this reputation.

Lelystad Airport is the largest general aviation airport in the Netherlands, located 4.0 mi (6.5 km) southeast of Lelystad. The airport was built in 1970, and the first flights took place in 1973.

The airport also houses the Netherlands’ largest aviation museum, Aviodrome, which has a large collection of aircraft, many of which are in flying condition. The airport is a busy hub – because of the presence of the museum, many aviation events are regularly held at the airport.

Some expansions are planned for the airport, namely a longer runway, and facilities to accommodate bigger aircraft and about 2 million passengers a year. After the upgrades, the airport will have the capacity to accommodate holiday charters, budget airlines and regional airlines using large aircraft such as Airbus A320 and Boeing 737 series.

Lelystad X is an accurate representation of the airport with excellent attention to detail. The scenery looks stunning and makes this airport vibrant in FSX.

Features

All airport buildings are portrayed in great detail

The Aviodrome museum is captured beautifully, and most aircraft on display are included

Excellent frame rates

High definition textures for airport terrain

Outstanding animation of apron activity

Full volumetric shadow for all buildings

Seasonal textures

Highly detailed night lighting - taxiway markers are included

Runway and taxiway lights in 3D

Compatibility with traffic add-ons

Aerosoft installers are typically easy – you will find it easy to install and configure this add-on. The product comes with a 22-page manual that features well-illustrated charts, as well as preferred or advised display settings for the scenery, graphics, weather and traffic tabs. The manual comes in an English and Dutch version.

What I like about Lelystad X:

It is a highly detailed and accurate representation of the airport

It includes many buildings and objects at the airport and immediate surrounding areas, thus creating a vivid portrayal of this airport

Concise and handy manual

Suitable for VFR and IFR flights

Easy installer with auto detection of the FSX directory

On the downside, in my opinion, is the too low quality of the overall ground textures except those on the runway and taxiways.

At €14,95, this is a great price for an excellent rendition of Lelystad airport. This add-on delivers on all important aspects, namely overall quality, detail, and precision.

System requirements:

Microsoft Flight Simulator X

Microsoft Windows XP, Vista, 7

2.0 GHz CPU

1 GB Ram

Graphics card with 256 MB

Download-Size: 280 MB

	The Airbus A320 Family

Airbus X builds on the popularity and success of the Airbus A320 family. Commercial passenger jet airliners in the Airbus A320 family include the A318, A319, A320 and A321, and the ACJ business jet.

The A320 was the first member of the family, flying for the first time in 1987. The A320 family was soon extended to include the A321, the A319, and the A318, first delivered in 1994, 1996 and 2003, respectively. In 2010, Airbus launched A320neo "New Engine Option", a new generation of the A320 family. To date, about 5,200 Airbus A320 family aircraft are in service. The A320 family was the first group of commercial aircrafts to use digital fly-by-wire flight control systems and side-stick controls.

	Warsaw – A Unique City

Warsaw city is located on the longest river in Poland, Vistula River, and about 260 kilometres (160 mi) from the Baltic Sea. The Warsaw greater metropolitan area has a population of about 2 million residents, and it ranks as the ninth most populous city in the European Union. The city area covers an area of 516.9 sq kilometres (199.6 sq mi).

Warsaw was almost rebuilt from scratch after World War II, during which most of its buildings were destroyed. Today, the city is vibrant with many skyscrapers, a stunning skyline, and a distinctive eastern European flavor. Warsaw is a popular international tourist destination, particularly during summer.

Warsaw city is a dominant economic and cultural centre that attracts many people from the rest of the country in pursuit of employment opportunities and education – and as a result, it is by far the largest and fastest growing Polish city. The city has a unique character, as influenced by three main factors, namely the Second World War, more than four decades of communist rule, and the current transformative years with significant in-flow of foreign investment.

If you would like to enjoy Warsaw from up in the air, Warsaw City 2013 X will do the job.

Quest to Find 10 of the World's Safest Airlines

Recent news about major problems with the Boeing 787 Dreamliner has made me very concerned about the safety of the world’s stock of commercial aircraft. I read on the BBC website a summary of the Dreamliner’s problems. They include cracked windshields, computer malfunctions, battery breakdowns, fan shaft failures, fuel spills, oil leakages and more.

Here is what Larry Bell from Forbes had to say:

No one who flies likes to hear about reports of aircraft malfunctions, and yes, Boeing’s new advanced technology 787 Dreamliner flagship aircraft has experienced several. The most recent incident, an overheated battery prompting an All Nippon Airways (ANL) airliner to make an emergency landing, has resulted in an order by the Federal Aviation Administration to temporarily ground all domestic 787s. Currently, United Airlines, which owns six of the aircraft, is the only domestic carrier that is affected.

This is the first time in four decades that U.S. regulators have grounded a major airliner, an action taken following the second of two 787 battery malfunctions. Aviation regulatory agencies world-wide have followed suit. -Larry Bell/Forbes (1/20/2013)

Do you realize what is happening here? The brand spankin’ new Boeing Dreamliner, the most advanced aircraft in aviation history, has been grounded around the world due to “several malfunctions.”

And it has barely been in service!

Listen, this makes me crazy. I’m a professional pilot--I love to fly. But when a technologically advanced aircraft hailed as the future of aviation is breaking down like a 20- year-old car with bald tires and a smoky engine, I think twice when I get on any commercial flight.

It made me wonder, “What are the safest airlines? Who has the best record?”

I did some digging and discovered a study cited at AskMen.com that looked at airlines flying internationally--with a minimum of 1 million flights--that had the lowest number of accidents since 1985. I also consulted data from the Air Transport Rating Agency (ATRA) and Europe's Jet Airliner Crash Data Evaluation Centre (JACDEC) 2013 report. Based on these publications, I give you 10 of the world’s safest airlines:

	No.10: Cathay Pacific

Cathay Pacific was founded in 1946 by two ex-Air Force American pilots. They had to put up $1 in Hong Kong currency at the time to register the airline. The company had some incidents in the early years including the first hijacking of a commercial airliner in 1948.

However, its most recent fatal accident was in 1972 which is a good record. Since that incident, they have completed more than 1 million flights without major problems. Cathay Pacific flies to over 36 different countries--they accommodated over 27 million passengers in 2010.

My guess is Hong Kong is so crowded these days most of those passengers are leaving town just to get some room to breathe, and possibly find some cheaper rent. In any case, Cathay Pacific is dedicated to servicing clients well. In 2005, they were named Airline of the Year by Skytrax.

	No.9: TAP Portugal

Tap Portugal marked 60 years of service in 2005. They have not experienced a major accident since 1977. They complete thousands of flights every week to over 30 countries. The company was taken private in 2012 as part of the bailout of Portugal by the European Union and the International Monetary Fund.

A highlight for Tap Portugal was being selected to fly Pope John Paul II on his first trip to Portugal back in 1982. At first there was some internal discussion because they weren’t sure if any of their planes could accommodate the Pope’s tall hat. Those concerns were quashed when they found out he doesn’t wear it during flight.

People often ask what TAP stands for. Originally, it stood for Transportes Aéreos Portugueses. Now TAP reflects their superior safety record and pleasurable flying experience—it stands for Trouble-Free and Protected.

	No.8: Aerolineas Argentinas

Aerolineas Argentinas (Argentine Airlines) has a heritage that reaches all the way back to the 1920s. They have had ups and downs since then. Despite their safety record--they have not had a fatal event since 1970—they were not so good at operating at a profit. By the 1990s they edged toward bankruptcy, losing $240 million in 1999 alone. The Argentine government organized a “renationalization” arrangement in 2008 that expanded their ownership from 5% to 20%.

With headquarters in San Nicolás, they operate two hubs out of Buenos Aires. Why have two hubs in the same city? Think of cities like Los Angeles that have two basketball teams: The Lakers and the Clippers. A city the size of Buenos Aires probably needs two hubs anyway. Just make sure you go to the right terminal.

While the company has a good air safety record, it hasn’t been all good news. One lowlight took place in 1992 when Aerolíneas Argentinas Flight 386 landed in Los Angeles from Buenos Aires. Of 336 passengers on board, 76 became ill with cholera from tainted shrimp. The airline blamed the Peruvian caterer which eventually resulted in AA being banned from that country for a while.

Despite that unfortunate blemish, Aerolineas Argentinas consistently ranks as one of the safest airlines around. Even though it has been over 20 years, I’d still avoid the shrimp. Don’t cry for me, Argentine Airlines.

	No.7: Air New Zealand

Air New Zealand is the national air carrier for New Zealand and Lord of The Rings fan clubs worldwide. They fly to 28 destinations inside the country and 28 destinations spread across 15 countries in Europe, North America, Oceania and Asia.

It is the only airline that can currently claim to circumnavigate the world. Their NZ 1/2 flies from Heathrow to Los Angeles and on to Auckland, and the NZ 35/38 goes from Auckland to Hong Kong to Heathrow. If you are in the mood to circle the world like Magellan, you better do it soon. In March of 2013, these flights will end due to a new agreement with Cathay Pacific.

In business since 1965, early versions of the airline began in 1940. They can point to a sound safety record as there has not been a fatal accident since 1979. That is pretty good when you consider they handle more than 12 million passengers every year.

Air New Zealand consistently wins awards from both consumer groups and industry organizations. For example, they won the Airline of the Year award in both 2010 and 2012, and a Global Airline Award from Air Transport World. In November of 2012, United Kingdom newspaper The Telegraph named Air New Zealand the 3rd best long-haul airline in the world. All they need now is a Golden Globe and an Academy Award.

	No.6: Aer Lingus

Aer Lingus (“Air Fleet”) is the national airline of Ireland. Flying mostly Airbus aircraft, they fly to North America, Asia, North Africa and Europe. Although rival Ryanair is larger, Aer Lingus is the oldest operating airline in the country. The headquarters is located at Dublin Airport. Seán Ó Huadhaigh was named the first chairman when the company was founded in 1946, even though nobody could spell his name.

Over 4000 employees handle roughly 10 million passengers every year, generating revenues around 1.3 billion. For flights across the Atlantic, they offer two classes, while European and North African flights have mixed fares.

Over two million flights and more than 40 years have passed since the last fatal accident. In 2011, they marked their 75th anniversary. Part of the celebration was a special livery from the 1960s, with the crew wearing historical uniforms as well. Hopefully they didn’t wear 1960s love beads and Earth shoes.

	No.5: Finnair

The fifth oldest airline in the world, Finnair has been rolling along for 50 years without a fatal accident. One of the oldest airlines still in operation, Finnair’s lineage runs back to the 1920s. In the Second World War, the Finnish Air Force utilized their aircraft, half of which never came back.

Company highlights include being the first airline to fly from Western Europe to Japan, and the first carrier from Western Europe to fly from Europe to China non-stop. Finnair’s unique location means they can fly faster to Asian locations by going over the Arctic.

The largest airline in Finland, their staff of almost 10,000 handles over 10 million passengers every year. The company headquarters are located at Vantaa while the main hub is at Helsinki-Vantaa airport. They provide service to 15 locations in Finland and more than 55 locations in other countries. Most of those flying to other countries are just looking for some warmth.

In the middle of 2013, Finnair is scheduled to begin operations in a new head office called the House of Travel and Transportation. The facility boasts over 22,000 square meters of space with modern conveniences and design. Mostly, the staff looks forward to better snow removal equipment in the parking lot so they can get home faster.

	No.4: Qantas

Qantas, the official airline of Australia, has had an amazing safety record over its 90-year history. Beginning operations in 1920, it provides service to 182 cities in 44 countries around the globe. Originally, the letters stood for Queensland and Northern Territorial Air Services. It is not true the letters now represent the slogan, “Quality and Nice Treatment Air System.”

The company nickname is “The Flying Kangaroo.” Catchy, but I prefer other snappy nicknames such as “The Kissing Koala,” “The Smiling Croc” and “The Merry Marsupial.” Qantas is headquartered in a suburb of Sydney with the main hub located at Sydney Airport.

Qantas has a dominant share of Australia’s market, capturing 65 percent domestically and 18.7 percent of international travel. The last time there was a fatal accident was in 1951. A number of “close calls” including an engine explosion in 2010 have tarnished their safety image somewhat. Nonetheless, their long term safety performance puts them in at a respectable number 4.

	No.3: All Nippon Airways

Japan’s official airline, All Nippon Airways, or ANA, operates out of their headquarters in the Minato area of Tokyo. Currently, it flies to 49 locations in Japan and 32 destinations outside the country. Over 14,000 employees worked for ANA in 2009. International hubs are located at Narita International and Kansai International Airports. Domestic hubs are located at Osaka International, Tokyo International, Chubu Centrair International and New Chitose International Airports.

ANA had an unfortunate hijacking in 1999 which ended with the captain being killed. Still, from 1975 to 2011 the airline did not have an accident. In 2011, Flight 140 made several passengers violently ill mid-flight due to a pilot error. And in 2012, a 737 slid off the end of a runway in a blinding snowstorm.

Founded in 1952, it has garnered many awards for on-time service and overall excellence. ANA has several subsidiaries including a regional carrier named ANA Wings. They also operate Air Japan and other carriers such as AirAsia Japan, Air Do and ANA Cargo, a freighter division. In addition, they also are a primary shareholder in a low-cost carrier named Peach.

Recently ANA cancelled over 140 flights as a result of problems with Boeing’s 787 Dreamliner. ANA joins several other airlines that have grounded the Dreamliner due to several incidents related to the aircraft’s battery charger and the auxiliary power system. Caution such as this is one reason All Nippon Airways is at number three in the safety countdown.

	No.2: Air Canada

Air Canada is the largest airline in Canada for both full-service and scheduled passenger services. In addition, they have more flights over the U.S.-Canada border, and more international flights to and from Canada than any other carrier. Combined with Air Canada Express, the company handles over 33 million passengers every year. It flies to 170 locations around the globe and is a founding member of Star Alliance transportation network.

Air Canada uses a comprehensive Safety Management System which incorporates involvement of management and employees, continuing development of safety methods, and ongoing education and training. Their commitment to safety has resulted in an enviable record. The latest fatal incident was a flash fire that killed 23 passengers in 1983. Over 5 million flights have flown since that event. Canada has nice people, great beer and the second safest airline in the survey.

	No.1 British Airways

British Airways, or BA, is the official flag carrier airline for the United Kingdom. The company offices are located in Waterside with the main hub situated at London Heathrow Airport. Measured by fleet size and international destinations, British Airways is the largest airline in the country. Considering only passengers carried, competitor easyJet takes the top spot. BA is part of the Oneworld alliance which includes Qantas, Cathay Pacific, and American Airlines. In 2009, they merged with Iberia to create the third largest airline in the world and the largest in Europe.

Notably, BA flew the Olympic flame from Athens to London RNAS Culdrose for the London Olympic 2012 Olympic Games. The flight’s passengers included Princess Anne and David Beckham. There is a rumor that the Queen and James Bond were considering jumping out of a BA aircraft for the opening ceremonies, but they settled for a helicopter. The Queen’s corgis, Monty and Holly were not asked for their opinion on the matter.

So how did BA grab the top spot? Since 1976, they have not suffered a single fatal accident, representing over six million flights under their banner. Experience is on their side as they have been operating for over 90 years and handle up to 40 million passengers annually. They may be a continuing target for feisty competitors such as Richard Branson’s Virgin Airways, but BA can claim with conviction that over the years they are the safest ride in the sky.

So there you have 10 of the world’s safest airlines. I don’t know about you, but I’m going to schedule these airlines as much as possible. The Boeing 787 Dreamliner’s problems make me question all commercial aircraft.

I prefer to pilot my own planes. But when I fly commercial, I’m going to get every advantage I can.

	Comments please!

Orbx has announced that it will release FTX Global for FSX and Prepar3D during the first half of 2013.

In an announcement posted on the company’s website, John Venema, CEO of Orbx, said, “In 2013 we will be releasing a FTX product for FSX and Prepar3D that covers the entire world with FTX textures combined from the twelve different regions we have developed since 2008 including England. It won't be a perfect solution like a "full-fat" FTX region because it is predominately textures only. However, it will cover the whole globe with Orbx so you never have to experience FSX default textures again.”

If you are a dedicated simulator pilot looking to take your flight simulator experience to the next level – SimPlates Ultra is a tool you might like to play around with.

Dauntless Software has announced the release of SimPlates ULTRA, which precedes SimPlates 2000, SimPlates 2004, and SimPlates X. In terms of plate coverage and enhanced user experience, the newly released SimPlates ULTRA for FS2004 and FSX represents a significant leap forward compared to the previous generations of SimPlates.

SimPlates ULTRA is the ultimate collection of IFR approach charts and global airport directory designed to meet the needs of all flight simulation enthusiasts.

	Product Features

More than 70,000 high quality, real world IFR plates – charts that real-world pilots use while flying, to guide them through some of the most crucial stages of flight, for example, approach to landing, arrival, taxi and departure. It includes airport diagrams, approach plates, SIDs/STARs, and so much more.

A wide range of approach types, namely NDB, SDF, TACAN, LLZ, VOR/DME, ILS, VOR, Visual, Helicopter, among others

Outstanding coverage of every IFR plate for the USA, as well as plates for many other countries

 A comprehensive worldwide Airport/Facilities directory

Extensive valuable information and approaches on many airports worldwide

An all-inclusive international register of a wide range of Navigational Aids

A user-friendly interface – you can find any plate you want easily and quickly – getting the plate you want for your virtual flight has never been easier. You can use the plates directly from the program on your mobile devise, for example, a tablet, or you can print them on your Mac or PC.

How Do you Use SimPlates Ultra?

Whether flying the biggest Boeing or the smallest Cessna, real world pilots refer to IFR plates while flying. Just like the real world pilot, while you are virtually approaching an airport on your computer, you bring up the airport’s plates in the SimPlates app to guide you in flying the approach to landing – just like a real world pilot would.

You can use SimPlates in a wide range of flight simulation programs, including all versions of Flight Simulator.

	Downloading and File Size

The plates in SimPlates Ultra are in excess of 100 GB. You can download the files from Dauntless Software servers on an on-demand basis when you select them in the SimPlates Ultra app. You will need to be online to do the download, and it takes only a few moments. The plates you have downloaded into SimPlates will be stored on your device, enabling you to continue to use them while offline. Due to the vast collection of data in this program, SimPlates Ultra is not available on DVD, unlike the previous SimPlates versions.

	Charts Quality

Overall, the charts are of a generally good quality – however, the specific qualities across different countries vary as they are from different sources. For the USA, SimPlates Ultra has the standard NACO/ NIMA charts that the majority of pilots fly IFR with. Also included are FLIP/ DOD charts that are printed by the US military agency for the US and other countries. The respective aviation authorities have supplied charts for other countries outside the US. According to Dauntless software, a small portion (less than 1%) of the charts is from unofficial sources.

In your flight simulator, you can fly anywhere you want, at anytime. Make your flight experience complete and realistic with SimPlates Ultra and its worldwide coverage and vast collection of charts and data.

Offering the exact same, real charts used by real pilots, this program is the ultimate companion app that you can use in your desktop flight simulation program to enhance your realism and flight experience, and have more fun!

UT2 Power Pack is a free, easy-to-use add-on to Flight One's Ultimate Traffic 2 product for FSX. It allows the user to create new schedules, import add-on schedules and create or modify airport identifiers.

UT2 Power Pack offers the following features:

Create add-on schedules manually. Users can manually create their own schedules from scratch, one flight at a time. As a user, you can add many things you want in flight simulation, namely virtual airlines, charter airlines, special event schedules such as special military flights and smaller airlines that are not available on popular flight simulation sites. You can also use UT2 Power Pack to schedule GA traffic at your local airport. UT2 Power Pack is particularly useful to Virtual Airlines because they can add all their schedules to the FSX world.

Airport modification. UT2 Power Pack comes with an airport modification tool. Users who have add-on airports that were not included originally with the FSX release can use this tool to add or modify these airports, enabling UT2 to handle the scheduled AI Traffic.

Import downloaded schedules. UT2 Power Pack allows users to import classic BGL style schedules, with the help of AIFPC or TTools. They can also create schedules and AI aircraft activity that is not already included with the software.

Share add-on schedules. With the UT2 Power Pack, users in the Ultimate Traffic 2 community are able to share newly created schedules with others.

Reviews by users of UT2 Power Pack indicated that the product is well-liked for a number of reasons:

It is easy to install – whether you use the download or DVD version

FSX is set and ready to get UT2 AI traffic, hence no complex adjustments in the control panel are necessary

Flight One offers a free downloadable version for you to try before you buy, which helps any potential buyers who still need to make up their minds.

The product comes with a comprehensive manual

You can grab your copy of Ultimate Traffic 2 over at SimShack.net.

Running Microsoft Flight Simulator X on a Mac

Under Steve Jobs leadership, Apple reversed its slide into mediocrity and now is one of the most profitable companies on the planet. Many PC owners have made the switch to the Mac platform.

But what about all the great Windows-based programs like Microsoft Flight Simulator X? You love FSX, and you are a Mac owner. What do you do now?

Don’t worry, captain! The good news is there are several ways to run FSX on Mac OS X.

	Boot Camp

FSX will run on your Mac if it is fitted with an Intel processor. A simple solution is to add Boot Camp and any of these Windows operating systems installed after setting up Boot Camp:

Windows XP with SP1 or higher

 Windows Vista

 Windows 7

Boot Camp is software with "multi-boot" capability. It is part of the Apple OS X operating system and lets you run Windows programs on Macs that have Intel architecture.

Boot Camp, Macs Can do Windows too

You have to partition your hard drive to make it work. However, the task is relatively painless using the Boot Camp Assistant which will guide you through the whole procedure. You will install Windows device drivers and the Windows Control Panel in the process.

Currently Apple requires OS X systems to have:

 Optical drive (optional)

Blank CDs or USBs for the Windows drivers (again, optional)

16 GB of open HD space for 32-bit Windows or 20 GB for 64-bit Windows.

Windows 7 Home Premium, Professional, or Ultimate (32-bit and 64-bit editions) install disks or install images

 Intel-Based Mac

You can boot up in either Apple or Windows mode. Boot Camp is a great way to run FSX because it boots straight into Windows. Essentially, you are running a Windows machine when in this mode.

The main consideration is having enough power and memory. Running FSX on full settings on Windows takes a lot of power as it is. Now you are adding Boot Camp in the mix. That means you really should have a beefy Mac with plenty of RAM.

There are some other things to consider when using Boot Camp. Make sure you have an effective antivirus program. Also, you need a lot of extra room on the hard drive for aircraft and other add-ons. It will fill up faster than you think.

The advantages of Boot Camp include:

It comes free with OS X 10.6 or above.

 Good performance running Windows programs.

 Simple and quick to install.

	Boot Camp disadvantages include:

You need to boot the system into your operating system of choice. You cannot switch "on the fly."

There is no simple way to share files across the different operating systems.

Backups are more laborious because you need to run a separate session for each side

You can begin the set-up of Boot Camp quite easily:

Click on the spotlight feature on the top of your Mac OS X desktop - the icon looks like a magnifying glass (the search feature), like this:

Search for "Boot Camp" and click on the "Top Hit" called "Boot Camp Assistant":

Follow the simple installation and configuration screen which will guide you through the set-up process:

	Parallels

Parallels Desktop for Mac is a proven solution for running Windows programs on a Mac.

In fact, well-known tech writer Walt Mossberg recently wrote in the Walt Street Journal, "Parallels 8 does a fine job of running Windows on a Mac, especially Windows 8. It doesn't emulate every feature, like those taking advantage of a touch screen—which the Mac lacks. But it makes Windows 8 work on a Mac pretty much like it works on a standard Windows PC that you'd upgrade to Windows 8."

Parallels can run Windows and Mac programs in tandem because it builds a "virtual machine," essentially a Windows machine inside a Mac. This is different from Boot Camp's approach. Boot Camp hands the Mac system completely over to Windows. You can only run one operating system at a time, and must reboot to access them.

Some users report that Parallels does not run FSX as well as Boot Camp. User "K1PC" wrote on the Parallels forum (forum.parallels.com) that, "FSX is the really the only thing I use in Parallels, I don't have to do any further upgrades. (But) I get much better performance when I boot into Windows (in Boot Camp) ... and, I have better use of my monitors."

Running FSX in a Parallels Virtual Machine on OS X

Still, Macworld found that FSX runs well on Parallels. A 2011 review of Parallels Desktop 7 said,

Overall, I was amazed at the performance I saw. Parallels can provide up to 1GB of video RAM, which means that even some newer games with large texture sizes will run reasonably well; I was able to play the demo of Hard Reset, an intensive first person shooter, at decent (though not great) frame rates. Older games, such as Microsoft’s Flight Simulator X and Crysis, ran very nicely, with smooth graphics and audio. Even the demo of Call of Duty 4, which ran but with jerky-slow frame rates when I last tested it with Parallels 5, is now playable.

Another concern with FSX is using peripherals like joysticks and rudders. In the Macworld review they addressed the issue:

While testing the games, I was also able to test Parallels’ support for USB peripherals, which turns out to be quite good. I used a Bluetooth mouse, a Saitek flight stick, a generic gamepad, and a Logitech Momo force feedback wheel and pedal set, all of which worked fine. The only exception was that the force feedback in the wheel isn’t active within the virtual machine. When you connect a USB device, Parallels provides a nice visual dialog box for selecting how it should be assigned, and whether that assignment is permanent or temporary.

	Parallels multiple view modes include:

Window – Run Windows in a completely separate window.

Coherence – Operate Windows and Mac side-by-side like they were blended together.

Full Screen – Forgo the Mac interface for the familiarity of a Windows desktop.

Modality – Use transparent windows to see all the action at once.

Parallels allows you to drag and drop files in between Mac and Windows smoothly. You can launch Windows programs from the Mac dock. Most Macs will run windows including iMac, MacBook Pro and MacBook Air. You can download Parallels from their website. To run the program you have to enter a key. After that you can run any Windows program.

You can grab Parallels directly from the Parallels website here.

	VMWare Fusion

VMWare's Fusion takes a similar approach as Parallels. You do not need to reboot to change operating systems. You can launch Windows programs like FSX just as you would a Mac application, using Mac shortcuts and gestures as well.

A great feature is the ability to run Windows programs on one screen, or across two or more screens. In "Unity view," you can run FSX without seeing Windows at all.

VMWare Fusion running Windows in OS X

What if you've already installed Boot Camp and want to give Fusion a try? Fusion will run FSX and your Mac stuff straight from your current Boot Camp partition.

Early in 2012, Fusion 4 was selected over Parallels by Macworld as the best way to run Windows programs on a Mac. It beat Parallels in 9 out of 11 performance benchmarks. Macworld also found Fusion easier to install and operate.

Here is Walt Mossberg's take on Fusion:

In my reviews of the last couple of editions of Parallels and Fusion, I've found Parallels, which claims about 70% of the Windows-on-Mac market, superior. I'm sticking with that conclusion. I found Parallels faster at every common task, like starting and restarting Windows, and resuming Windows from a suspended state.

What if you don't have the latest and greatest hardware and software? It seems even older versions of Fusion work well with FSX. A few years ago, Rob Griffiths of Macworld fired up a copy of FSX running on Fusion 3 and Windows 7 running on a 2008 iMac sporting an ATI Radion 2600. To make it extra challenging, he ran Screenflow at the same time to grab a screen capture. The result is a surprisingly smooth graphics performance. (Rob's flying skills leave a little to be desired, however.) Here is the video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8V92Qba865U

Not everyone agrees. Over at the a2simulations forum (a2simulations.com) user "Tigerclaw" lamented, "I use VMware Fusion for a "Virtual PC" and run this machine as a Mac and a PC at the same time, but you can't run FSX that way, it's too demanding."

You can grab your copy of VMWare Fusion over at their website here.

	VirtualBox

Another option for technically oriented users is Virtualbox, part of Oracle's group of virtualization programs. It was originally developed by innotek as an x86 program. Sun Microsystems bought innotek in 2008, and Oracle bought Sun in 2009.

Virtualbox was made not just for Macs. It can run on multiple operation systems including Windows Linux and OS/2.

Running VirtualBox on OS X

For Mac OS X it allows unlimited virtualization sessions. Unfortunately, Virtualbox so far does not stack up as well as Parallels and Fusion. A Macworld review found that, "In 3D Windows performance, VirtualBox also lags its competition. While there is some basic DirectX support, there’s only minimal support for the Aero interface in Windows. I wasn’t able to get any of my three test games (Half Life 2, Call of Duty 4, Flight Sim X) to run. You may have more success with older games, but anything relatively new will probably not work in VirtualBox."

Still, Virtualbox is free software. It is available as Open Source Software working under the guidelines and terms of the GNU General Public License (GPL) version 2.

Unlike some open source projects, it is not a stagnant effort. It is actively being developed. There have been a number of releases, expanded features, and new platforms added. It has the double benefit of open source innovation, and the backing of a huge software company.

If you have the tech chops and like working with open source software, give it a whirl and see how it works for you. Just be realistic in your expectations.

	Underground Tweaks

A small cadre of FSX fanatics have come up with some tweaks to make FSX perform faster and cleaner, even on medium power Macs.

Tweaking FSX config settings

Now, changing these settings is not really recommended unless you really know what you are doing, and we can't be responsible if something goes haywire. You could even harm your computer so any changes you make are at your own risk. With that caveat, the tweaks and tips can be found on our page here.

Steve White wrote some suggestions at the Flight Sim Network to help the "tweaking" process. He said to use the same aircraft when making tweaks because it is much easier to judge performance changes. Also, use an aircraft that ships with the program. Some add-on aircraft can be a little wonky, and will affect the performance evaluation.

	Plenty of Power

Probably the best advice is to make sure your Mac has plenty of juice. Realistically, FSX needs a powerful computer when it is running in its native Windows. Microsoft lists some of the basic Windows system requirements as:

Computer processor - 2.0 gigahertz (GHz) or more

Memory - 1 gigabyte (GB) or more of RAM

Hard disk space - 4 gigabytes (GB) available hard disk space

Video card - DirectX 9 (or later version)-compatible video card

128 MB or more video RAM, Shader Model 1.1 or later version

 DVD drive - 32x speed

To get the most out of FSX, however, you will need more firepower than these specs, especially if you are going to be running it inside of a current OS X session. 4 GB of RAM is a good place to start. And you’ll need plenty of hard disk space.

Similarly, running FSX in Parallels or Fusion on top of the OS X is a tall order. Try to pack as much RAM as possible into the Mac, preferably anywhere from 4GB to 8GB, or more. Get a large hard disk and plenty of processing power.

Should you tweak the configuration files to make it run better? It sounds simple, but if something goes wrong you could botch up some software, or even worse fry your computer. It’s better to opt for more powerful hardware than freezing up the whole system.

	Multiple Options

Whether you choose Boot Camp, Parallels or VMWare Fusion, the good news is you have plenty of options. You may want to start with Boot Camp and test how your system reacts. With good results, consider adding Parallels or Fusion to up the ante.

Keep in mind that FSX is a graphics intensive game. It is leaps and bounds more immersive than Flight Simulator 2004. But impressive graphics come at a price. You should invest in as much hardware power as your budget allows.

Apple iMac running FSX

This advice is even more applicable if you plan on running other Windows programs at the same time as FSX. For example, concurrent screen capture programs can slow things down unless your system has the horsepower to keep everything running smoothly.

As an example, here is Walt Mossberg again, sharing his experience with less powerful systems, “I did find one major downside to using Windows 8 on a Mac. While it worked like a breeze on my relatively new MacBook Air, both Windows 8 under Parallels, and Mac programs running simultaneously, suffered delays when I tried them on an older iMac.”

Crank up the power and you’ll be enjoying FSX on your Mac with no problems.

Post your experiences and comments below, we'd love to hear them!

Cruising at 30,000 feet, you look out the window of the cockpit to see the sun slowly rising as it gradually lets go of the horizon. You feel exhausted but happy. As a senior pilot for British Airways, you’ve just completed a long tour of the Far East with stops in Singapore, Hong Kong and Tokyo. Now you are finally heading home.

Just a dream? Similar scenarios happen every day as hundreds of pilots tour the world working for virtual airlines. Any pilot can become a senior Captain on a global airline, all on their computer.

A virtual airline is similar to a real one except all activity takes place on computers around the world using flight simulation software. Experts estimate there are tens of thousands of hobbyist "virtual pilots" involved with hundreds of virtual airlines.

The airlines evolved as a natural extension of the popularity of flight simulation software like Microsoft Flight Simulator. After mastering their own solo flights, pilots were looking for more interaction and involvement.

	Immersive Experience

As computer technology grew more powerful, virtual airlines expanded their operations and capabilities. Virtual airlines give users a more immersive experience. Pilots can experience flying for an airline they otherwise may not be able to qualify for in real life. Other users are limited by physical or financial constraints. The virtual environment removes those challenges.

Research studies have indicated that participants feel a strong bond to their airlines, much the same as those in real life. Several university projects have used virtual airlines to take a closer look at diverse subjects such as aviation, statistical theory and modeling.

	Early History

Virtual airlines are a subset of the larger phenomenon of online gaming. The original airlines came on the scene in the early 1990s in the forums on CompuServe, Prodigy and other online services.

The airlines tended to be more organized and structured than other early forms of online simulation games. Some observers even believe that the first virtual airlines were developed when flight simulators came on the market, well before the internet rose to prominence in the mid to late 1990s.

Around 2000, the airlines experienced a growth spurt. This rise in popularity paralleled the growth of online gaming in general. Multi-player online games in fantasy, combat and adventure simulations were growing rapidly. Faster computers, more capable broadband and DSL connections and better graphics all contributed to the rapid expansion.

Virtual airlines have often been early adopters of advanced Internet and computer technology. For example, the Virtual Air Traffic Simulation Network and the International Virtual Aviation Organization are two of the largest virtual airline multiplayer networks. As stand-alone flight simulation software titles developed, the multiplayer networks did as well.

	Two Types

There are two types of virtual airlines. The first approach is to create an airline that has no ties to a real-world counterpart. The name, brand, and logo are all created from scratch. This style is the most common. It provides users with the most flexibility and variety in aircraft selection, route designation and operational structure.

Livewire Airlines, a popular VA that is not based around a real-world counterpart. View their website here.

The second option is to create a virtual airline that mimics a real-world airline. They try to replicate the types of aircraft used, hubs and routes offered, and branding of their namesake. While there have been copyright disputes in the past, most real airlines have allowed their virtual counterpart to flourish.

A less common variety of virtual airline is a military airline. Instead of commercial aircraft, they use military aircraft and organizational hierarchy. Some focus on one area such as naval aviation. Another, less formal style of virtual airline is a virtual flying club. Like a real-world flying club, there is as emphasis on social interaction as flying.

	High-Speed Connection

While original virtual airlines were limited by the technology of bulletin board services (BBS) on which they originated, modern airlines enjoy incredible graphics and high-speed Internet connections. With the proliferation of virtual airlines, pilots can choose from among several networks such as Virtual Skies, VATSIM or IVAO. A network is the software and technology underneath the airline that makes it run.

The experience is truly immersive; pilots can see other planes, respond to air traffic control, and see weather conditions at a glance. Some airlines are so advanced they pay their pilots a virtual salary. They also determine operating costs, estimate profit and loss and use similar financial controls of a real airline.

A major advantage of virtual airlines is they provide a social hub for pilots to interact. Solitary flying on standalone computer lacks interpersonal communication. Virtual airlines offer multiplayer flying, Internet forums, articles, blog posts and other ways each pilot can meet and establish relationships with other hobbyists.

	Ranking and Awards

While virtual airline membership is generally free, some airlines are very selective about choosing their pilot staff. Applicants may need to pass knowledge tests before they are accepted.

Many virtual airlines have a complete ranking system that determines which pilot is approved to fly on which route. As pilots complete each flight, they file a report which indicates the number of hours flown. Their ranking increase as they gain experience and flight time.

Senior pilots can achieve higher status such as Captain. In addition to higher ranking, members can get awards and certificates. They may complete specified routes or accumulate hours in a specific type of airplane. All rankings and accomplishments are posted for others to observe.

	Hub and Spoke

As virtual airlines grow, coordinating routes and operations can become cumbersome. Some airlines will choose to diversity into smaller units called hubs. Often hubs use a group of pilots that operate out of the same location, beginning and ending flights from that hub. Virtual hubs try to replicate actual airline hubs as much as possible.

Aircraft branding and imagery is important to providing a consistent experience for users. However, custom delivery paints are often provided to give pilots a sense of pride and excitement. These customized liveries are posted on the virtual airline site, or can be downloaded from popular flight simulation websites.

Virtual airline users can speak with other players using Voice Over Internet Protocol. They can also text each other using Skype, MSN messenger and similar services.

Modern virtual airlines use automatic processes to track flight statistics. In the past, all of the data had to be reported manually. Now automated systems like the ACARS systems track flights in real-time and report statistics automatically at the end of the operation.

	Getting Involved

Every virtual airline is looking for enthusiastic members. Applicants will need flight simulation software in order to join the airline. Common flight simulation software titles include:

 Microsoft Flight Simulator

 X-Plane

 FlightGear

 Prepar3d

 Fly!

 GEFS Online

 YSFlight

There are hundreds of virtual airlines to choose from. A quick Internet search will provide a quick overview. Here are a few:

 BAV - (www.bavirtual.co.uk/)
The team behind Phoenix includes industry experts and a deep roster of committed pilots. Features includes pilot ratings, online flying, monthly competitions, specific missions, awards, training and special events.

 Austrian Virtual – (http://virtual.austrian.com/hq/)
Founded in 1998, Austrian Virtual operates with the permission of real world Austrian Airlines. Originally using a Yahoo group to communicate with each other, they moved to a dedicated website in forum in 2003. New pilots start as a “Trainee,” and can fly either a Dash or Fokker. As they gain experience and credit, they advance to Second Officer, First Officer, Senior First Officer, Captain, Senior Captain and Instructor.

The Virtual Airline List (http://www.va-list.com) keeps an updated list of “top” virtual airlines. However, the list changes rapidly. Industry veterans advise testing several airlines to see which one fits the best.

	Airlines For Newbies

Big virtual airlines can intimidate new users. On the Airliners.net forum someone asked for virtual airlines where a newbie can get their feet wet. A user with the handle NC1844V commented, “…I'd suggest this airline, which is very modern, but easy to get along with:

	http://www.atlanticsunairways.com

“This Airline has a training program that you can start flying short hops in a Cessna and then work your way up to a small turbo prop, and so on. They have a route system and you're only able to fly routes in the system as well as aircraft that you are qualified on. They have a lot of cool tools you can download, to make the experience more realistic. They have a very active forum and are very welcoming to new pilots.”

	Evaluating an Airline

When evaluating an airline, there are two important things to determine:

 Which airports are used?

What type of aircraft is in the fleet?

Users will want to make sure that a virtual airline uses airports they want to use on a regular basis. Similarly, check which aircraft the virtual airline uses. Since these are the aircraft regularly flown, it is important to make sure a prospective pilot wants to fly those planes. Each of these items can be found on the virtual airline's website. Look for links such as "Where We Fly" and "Fleet." Most sites have specific pages outlining the routes and aircraft utilized.

Since one of the benefits of virtual airlines is their social aspect, make sure to check out the forums on the airline website:

 Is there plenty of activity?

 Are people involved posting regularly?

Do the participants help each other or squabble about mundane things?

Since a prospective pilot will spend a lot of time with the airline, it is beneficial to make sure the other players are people they want to spend time with.

Follow all application directions completely and fill in each form accurately. Some applications may seem excessively detailed for a make-believe airline. Keep in mind that the owners and operators probably put in tens of thousands of volunteer hours to grow the airline and make it stable and efficient. They want to make sure everyone that gets involved is qualified and willing to participate on regular basis.

	First Flight

Most major virtual airlines have a pilot ranking system. Pilot aircraft certifications are limited based on their ranking. As they gain flight hours and experience they are allowed to take on more complex aircraft. First time pilots should choose their favorite flight among the routes offered.

Some airlines will track their statistics automatically using ACARS (Aircraft Communication Addressing and Reporting System). Others will utilize a manual reporting system. Often an airline requires a minimum number of flights to maintain active membership.

New members should take time to introduce themselves in the website forum. The forum is where much of the inside information about the airline's development, structure and growth is shared. Also, new users will get lots of tips and techniques to help make their first flights are smooth and successful.

A virtual airline needs considerable volunteer contributions to make it run smoothly. Once a new member is familiar with the airline operation, they should consider volunteering to help where they can. If they cannot contribute actual volunteer time, financial contributions are always welcome to help defray bandwidth and other expenses.

	Conclusion

Virtual airlines are a great way for flight simulation hobbyists to take their love of flying to the next level. They provide an immersive experience that can help pilots expand their skills and build their confidence.

However, don't forget that the whole point is to have more fun. As one Assistant Chief Pilot said about DeltaVA, “I am 38 years old and currently not real happy with my current job. Instead of being miserable every day, I am taking matters into my own hands and going back to school to be a programmer/analyst. I love this virtual airline and it is my vice to get me out of my hectic life.”

In other words, it's great to rise up in the pilot rankings and take on bigger titles and more responsibility. Just remember to enjoy each takeoff and landing on the way. Once Senior Captain or Instructor status is achieved, many pilots find that teaching others the ropes is as enjoyable as flying itself. The shared love of flying and flight simulation is the common bond that makes a great virtual airline community.
