Right Gents i need some good music to listen to, and i just wondered if my American friends knew of some good stuff that has'nt reached us in the UK (after all, you have music superstars there that we've never heard of because the US is so big ). I'm open to all suggestions( keep it clean Very Happy ), it'd be also interesting to find out what you listen to (bel, VF,Tailhook Very Happy ). Here's a few of my favourites, obviously the first is
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=q04_ClDxRsk , the next two are bands that come from Wales, the first is the Manic Street Preachers that come from a town about 8 miles from where i live and are a huge band (hit wise) and have been for some time and the next come from a town about 16 miles from where i live and are the fantastic Stereophonics and from the same band http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=OFnUPCNmySs

That's a hard question there Welsh! It's hard to find some good music these days if you ask me. Personally I like to listen to rock, house and techno, so I guess not much of a help from me. As far as the bands are concerned AC-DC and such for rock and mostly european DJ's for techno and house. Hope somebody else can give you a fresh name straight from the big ol' US of A! Very Happy

Hey VF AC/DC are one of my favourite bands, but only when Bon scott was singing , after that i did'nt like them so much Sad http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=m-twUOi1CM0 What is Angus on? Very Happy . What i'm trying to get at is if you like something post a link for me so i can see it, i like every thing from opera to heavy metal, except rap, i'd rather slam my privates in a car door than listen to that Shocked.

No music lovers? OK here's another favourite, plenty of headliners in this band.

Plenty of music lovers here Welshflyer, we're just a shy lot. Very Happy

I could write you a list so long you'd still be reading in the new year. Ok, for starters I don't like recent music because it lacks harmony and structure. So apart from classical music (Beethoven my favorite) I'm stuck basically with sixties music. I don't mind that at all though - so much to choose from.

Your topic starter: I haven't met anyone who dislikes 'In the Ghetto' and 'Suspicious Minds'. I'm really impressed with the Manic Street Preachers - just what are you guys up to in Wales... androgynous Shocked That song's grown on me, had it on a loop for hours. The Stereophonics "Step On My Old Size Nines" is nice without the video Cool

Sixties and seventies:

Jethro Tull
Led Zeppelin
Pink Floyd
Moody Blues

across the pond for vocal harmonies:

Crosby Stills and the Briton Nash
Mamas & Papas
Peter Paul & Mary
The Byrds

There you are, tip of the iceberg - any takers?

Some great choices there gents Very Happy , the reason i asked is as VF said it's hard to find good new music, so i find myself going back in time to stuff i have'nt listened to, for example i've just really discovered the Travelling Wilburys that consisted of...... Shocked
George Harrison
Tom Petty
Jeff Lynne
Bob Dylan
Roy Orbison
I just might have to ask Santa to bring me the collection for Christmas. Very Happy

Difficult question to answer there Welsh...

As a musician I have listened to almost everything, and in my past played MOST types of music.

My favorite genres are still to this day:

Heavy Metal
Reggae
World Fusion (a broad genre encompassing many styles rolled into one)
Rock
Jazz (old school stuff like Coltrane, etc...)

and

Blues

My absolute favorite performers are Metallica, String Cheese Incident, Bjork, Slayer, and Bob Marley. If I were to list every single band I love, this post would stretch longer than Deuteronomy.

If you like some really interesting jazz I would also recommend Bela Fleck and the Flecktones.

By the way, I agree tailhook... new music has NO originality anymore... any monkey with a guitar and the right contacts can get a record contract it seems... needless to say, I did not have the right contacts.

...needless to say, I did not have the right contacts.

Don't feel bad about it belgeode at least you're free to play the kind of music you wanna play and you can switch anytime and as often as you like.

Both of the above songs are classics, and the first one is one of my favorites!
Oh yeah, I also like to listen to Rod Stewart! Smile

Aaaah, now we're talkin' VF - I don't have to mention Maggie Mae but did you ever hear his 'Only a Hobo' (Dylan song) - I think it's on 'Gasoline Alley'... Cool
Faces.. Small Faces.. Ronny Woods (now Stones) and Rod Stewart used to look like twin brothers.

OMG that IS a classic!!! Anything from Motown is... as far as Bass guitar influences that ranks up there for me. Miriam Makeba is awesome, I like Johhny Clegg as well. I don't remember if it was him or his partner in crime they killed recently...

I think today's pop and hip hop does itself a serious disservice by copying riffs from songs of the past, it's as if no one wants to TRY and be original anymore.

Right now I got a battle I am fighting at home hahaha (If Lolo sees this she will kill me)

Ok my daughter "Lolo" (not her real name obviously) is a chip off the old block. She can sing like an angel, and plays piano quite well. I am trying to teach her guitar now before she learns bass... but her voice in particular SHOULD BE RECORDED... she has the mimicry down pat to the likes of Alicia keys and other female R&B artists... but she REFUSES to let me record her!!!! Shocked I have everything in the house to record and produce her, yet she won't let me do it. Instead she sings all around the house andi n front of her friends at school. Even her family members (cousins, aunt's uncles, etc.) have told her she needs to get her butt in a studio and record something....

She recently started writing lyrics... won't let me see em, won't let me come up with music for em... how do I break her out of her shell? She knows she has talent, she just does not want to use it productively!

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Gy_aahkIdEI

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=B_LRYezOfeo

but most of the time, 80's metal is what i play, judas priest, iron maiden, megadeth, OLD mettalica, (not the newer crap) skid row (only the 1st 2 albums) the first 2 g&r albums, sack blabbath, ozzy, kiss, not leaving out hendrix, old chili peppers stuff, violent femmes, ramones, the guess who,
sepultura (especially roots, beneath the remains and chaos a.d.)
monster magnet, queens of the stone age, henry rollins (you really need to listen to "weight" if you only take my advise on this one thing) i'm gonna stop before i get out of control and start listing all the country artists i like, and the classical composers i occasionally listen to, jazz guys, and so forth.

the same thing that happened to me, and is now happening to you.
you get older, and maybe become a parent, or get financially stable and suddenly the cool runs outta you like sand through an hour glass.
if muddy waters had bill gates' money or michael douglas wife, he wouldn't have ever played the blues. them guys cant be angry anymore.
maybe they can get angry when they're stuck in traffic, but not the deep anger and defiance that inspired ride the lightning.

no takers on the obscure album cover? i suppose none of you guys ever heard of elvis hitler? the album is supersadomasochisticsexpialidocious

i guess you guys never heard of TSOL either?

Heard the name but to be honest never actually heard the music of Elvis Hitler. TSOL I am not familiar with either... just googled it... sounds interesting though! Kinda reminds me a little of SOD.

Ball of Confusion (first link) is a great song cheezyflier, I find this comment by one of the members pertinent: "This is such a true song!! then and Now!! We are living on a Ball Confusion!! Love it!"

Maybe Welshflyer is sulking because we're not suggesting any decent music Shocked are we hijacking his topic?

Come back here Welshflyer and put us back in line Help!

In the meantime I've got three offerings: The first one was written by my favorite wordsmith and is here sung by the one and only Gladys:

The second song is a collaboration - wasn't even aware that they knew each other - these cats mean business:

This final number stars one of my favorite guitarists live at my all-time favorite Rock-concert (surprisingly good sound and video quality for YouTube) :
