It sounds to me as though your power supply (PSU) has died. It has happened to me once in the past. I was a total newb, had no idea and called the repair man.
Turns out, I could have done the work myself, it's just a matter of taking the old, faulty PSU out and replacing it with a new one.

The above applies to a situation where you don't even hear a sound or see any lights flashing after you've pressed the Start button on your computer.

Sadly, mine is failing too. I get about 20 minutes unplugged and then it fails. Sad

Is it a desktop or laptop?

Tailhook's right about the power supply, but one other possibility is that it's your motherboard. Hopefully it's the PSU, and it's more likely, but you want to make sure before you invest in a new one. Pull the power supply (It'll be a metal box on the inside part of wherever your power cable goes in, should only need 4 or so screws to come out.) and take it to a computer store, they should be able to test it for you.

If it's your mobo it's not so much expensive as a pain to replace... (A decent PSU costs about the same as a decent mobo)

The thing is PSU's only really vary in quality and power supplied, so any one you get will probably work for ya.

Finding a motherboard that's compatible with all of your hardware may be a little more difficult. It's also a much more involved process to switch one out. (It's not that difficult though, don't get scared or anything.)

One other thing I'd double check is that all of your wiring is correct, and that the psu switch is on and plugs are plugged in properly. (not a bad socket or anything.) It'd be kinda annoying if all that was wrong is that one of the leads to your power button had come unplugged Very Happy

this is sparks500kc dont know if you installed any new hardware recently that could be the problem does the computer possibly come on for just a moment you can tell by the green sttus lights on the back panel around where you plug in your monitor the other party was rite check your wiring for loose conections to especialy the power button it could be open or if you have one of those plastic like pices that run down to the button from the button you push it might be bent i have an old pacard desk top here hat is like have to fish inside the case to turn it on

Think the advise to have power suply checked is a good one then I cant think of anything else except for one thing if you know somone who has a usb hard drive you might try booting from that drive instead of the internal drive inside of your computer.
Its dificult to trouble shoot a computer this way, but that would be a start, if you can get hold of a usb hard drive with the system you are runing on your computer that would eliminate your internal hard drive it could be whats giving you the problem.

Details of your machine would help a lot. I will take a stab at it. If it is for example a Dell desktop the power light normally green will turn to amber, this indicates tow possible problems; 1. the psu. 2. There maybe be capicitors gone bad on the mobo?

If it is a Dell laptop; you would possibly get a shock error to the hard drive. That would showup on the HD icon that is normally green but this would have a lighning bolt through the icon.

If neither applies by another machine if you can do it.

Ed

It could very well possibly be the PSU... But if the green light shows up if you plug it in, it might be the mobo. And like someone said, those are a pain to replace. You need to get one with the right CPU slots, support for your HDD connections, i.e. IDE or SATA. I hope you get it fixed. I know what it's like to be without a computer for a while. You feel a little cut off from the world. Wink
I won't be on much, just occasionally popping up now and then... :p

Yeah me too, I wasnt on for like 4 months. Once I got back to the keyboard, I couldn't type properly, kept making heaps of typos and it felt so weird Laughing
Please direct your complaints to the moon, they might care there.
