First flight for Airbus SharkletsFirst flight for Airbus Sharklets

Description
Airbus' "Sharklet" wing-tip devices took to the sky for the first time on 30 November 2011 with a successful maiden flight using an A320 development aircraft. This nearly five-hour flight from Toulouse, France kicked off a multi-month test campaign to validate the Sharklets' performance, confirm their aerodynamic behaviour and gather data for certification. Sharklets are expected to reduce fuel burn over long sectors by at least 3.5 per cent, representing an annual CO2 reduction of approximately 700 tonnes per aircraft. Video by Airbus.

Official Sikorsky CH-53K Promo VideoOfficial Sikorsky CH-53K Promo Video

Description
Official Sikorsky CH-53K Promo Video. Promotional video demonstrating the CH-53K Super Stallion helicopter. Video by Sikorsky. Video Transcription Speaker: We're good to go. Speaker: Roger two, two, on the go. Speaker: Together with the United States Marine Corps, Sikorsky has pioneered the heavy lift segment for rotary aircraft, beginning with the recovery of downed air vehicles and the transport of heavy weapons. The 53 mission set has since evolved to include non-combat evacuation, maritime interdiction, and gas and oil platform operations among many others, driving an entirely new and expanded set of dramatically increased aircraft requirements. A totally new design, the Sikorsky CH-53K meets or exceeds all of the Marine Corps' heavy lift replacement requirements. Digital fly-by wire avionics with fully integrated flight and navigation displays, net-centric and tactical data-link integration, correlation, and fusion, three General Electric GE38-1B 7500 shaft horsepower engines, tripling the hot day lift capability versus current heavy lift aircraft at 110 nautical miles. Advanced rotor drive system, including split torque transmission, elastomeric main rotor head, and next generation composite main rotors, advanced directional infrared countermeasures, and three GAU-21 .50 caliber machine guns and redesigned composite air frame significantly increase aircraft and crew survivability. The use of advanced composites and fully integrated digital health and usage monitoring systems increases operational readiness, dramatically reducing direct maintenance and decreasing the per aircraft cost of ownership. Fully marinized with a large capacity L-palate ready internal cargo bay and independent triple hook external cargo handling system, the CH-53K has a max gross weight of 88,000 pounds and supports the full range of current and emerging Marine Corps mission requirements. Speaker: [inaudible 02:25] up at 10,000 feet. Speaker: Three minutes out. LC Hawk coming up at 10 o'clock. Speaker: Roger. Got it. Speaker: Hold you fire, sir. Speaker: Looking good, sir. Taxi to duty. On the go. Speaker: [inaudible 03:25] zero, zero, [inaudible 03:27] tower. Looks like they got another IED down on Highway 1A. Speaker: Got a SAM. One o'clock. Got a missile launch. Got another one at nine o'clock. [inaudible 03:51] fire. 508 Iron Horse, zero, zero. Enemy contact. [inaudible 03:57] Speaker: 00508, data received. Speaker: Targets destroyed. Engaging sand blaster. Speaker: [inaudible 04:25] coming up, too. Speaker: The CH-53K delivers significantly increased performance and capability across five key areas: multi-mission flexibility, state-of-the- art avionics, increased lift, and increased survivability, with decreased cost for fuel and maintenance. The Sikorsky CH-53K heavy lift helicopter is the Marine Corps choice for the 21st century. We pioneer flight solutions that bring people home everywhere, every time.

Official Boeing 737 MAX VideoOfficial Boeing 737 MAX Video

Description
Boeing unveiled the new 737 MAX, a new engine variant of the market-leading 737. Powered by CFM-International LEAP 1-B engines . The 737 MAX will offer max efficiency, max reliability, max passenger appeal, strengthening its position as world's most popular single aisle airplane. Video by Boeing. Video Transcription Nicole Piasecki, VP Business Development and Strategic Integration, Boeing Commercial Airplanes Our product strategy is to have the most capable airplane in every segment of the commercial airplane market. We are making a decision to invest in the 737 family. We are announcing the 737 MAX. The 737 MAX gives our airline customers the most efficient airplane in the single-aisle segment. Randy Tinseth, VP Marketing, Boeing Commercial Airplanes This is a market that's being driven by demand from low-cost carriers, by demand from emerging and developing economies, and by demand to replace older, less fuel-efficient aircraft. In fact, our forecast over the next 20 years is a total demand of more than 23,000 single-aisle airplanes, a market that's valued at close to $2 trillion US. Nicole Piasecki, VP Business Development and Strategic Integration, Boeing Commercial Airplanes Our airline customers are going to love the 737 MAX, because it gives them a significant advantage over any other airplane out there in terms of operating cost. The 737 MAX will have 10 to 12 percent better fuel efficiency per seat than today's next-generation 737. It's going to give them max efficiency, which leads to profitability, max reliability, and to the flying public, max passenger appeal. It will deliver lower emissions, and it will be a quieter airplane. Randy Tinseth, VP Marketing, Boeing Commercial Airplanes This is an airplane that will continue to have a competitive advantage to not only our competition today, but competition in the future. Nicole Piasecki, VP Business Development and Strategic Integration, Boeing Commercial Airplanes It's the optimization of everything that we and our customers have learned about designing, building, and maintaining the best single-aisle airplane in the world.

AirNav RadarBox 3D DemonstrationAirNav RadarBox 3D Demonstration

Description
A video from a member of our 3D development team showing RadarBox 3D in action with side by side 2D and 3D windows. It is showing real-time traffic on an external Google Earth application. By default RadarBox 3D software comes with an embedded Google Earth window inside the application. Traffic is being shown for Los Angeles and San Francisco. Video by AirNavSystems. Video Transcription All right, I'm going to do a quick little demo to see if this works. All right, so this is the new 3D mouse. I've got Radar Box opened here. This is Google Earth. There's a secret to getting Google Earth to show what the plugin normally shows. What you do - this is an undocumented secret - you do Add, Network Link, and then in Network Link you do the Local Host port 7895, and then aircraft.kmz, and aircrafthw.kmz. That will open up what normally is shown in the 3D view here. But it will show it in Google Earth. So, right now, I have two network links already created here that are showing the hardware and the network. So, that's why things are showing up here, in Google Earth. So, here is the 2D. Let's go to L.A. since that's pretty close. So, here's L.A, and this is the 3D mouse. I'm going to use this. It only works with the Google Earth so far. It won't work with the plug-in yet, but it will. So, go over here to the Google Earth. I've got everything set to maximum settings right now so, it'll be a little bit slow. Zoom in. Right now, it's a busy time for FedEx and UPS in the U.S. So, this is L.A. It takes a little bit of getting used to, but once you get the hang of it you don't even think about what you're doing. You just sort of look and think where you want to go and your hand just sort of does it. So, there's my mouse here. They work completely independently, so I can click on things with the mouse if I want to, while I'm moving around. There is that MD11 [inaudible 00:02:55]. Move around it nice and slow. Go back. So, that's L.A., I'm going over to San Francisco, check out what's going on there. That's FedEx, that's UPS. You can see those guys. You can pull up, move pretty fast too if you want. It's just easy to kind of get lost if you need some practice. This is the East Coast, lots of international flights coming in. Pull on back up. We'll go over to Europe. I have the refresh set for every 30 seconds or so, so there's a little bit of a lag as it updates because of all the 3D monitors and stuff. But if I set it to low, it's much faster.

Concorde's Last Landing at HeathrowConcorde's Last Landing at Heathrow

Description
A video recorded from BBC News of Concorde's last landing at London Heathrow Airport on Friday 24th October 2003. Video by BBC. Video Transcription Interviewer: Just looking to the sky, to watch this Concorde come down on the north of the runway. John, what sort of speed is it doing now as it's coming in to land? John: It was will be doing roughly 157 knots, something like that. Well, I think we'll see a little gust of wind caused. Interviewer: Was that a little bounce there or was that my imagination? John: No. No. No. It was a gust of wind. Interviewer: You're being loyal. You're being loyal to your fellow fraternity of Concorde pilots. John: Oh dear. You won't be pleased. Interviewer: You won't be pleased. Man 1: Remember as the airplane lands and takes off a great deal faster than your average jumbo. Interviewer: The reverse thrust you must need to get to break it. Do you feel that jolt? John: There are two things about the deceleration of Concorde on landing, reverse thrust is extraordinarily effective and the carbon fiber wheel brakes which pioneered the wheel brakes for all the modern airbuses and so on, and all modern airplanes, are incredibly efficient in terms of absorbing energy. You can stop a Concorde. I've stopped one in Cardiff in about 4,000 feet of runway. Interviewer: Yeah, I can just see the next one coming in behind us now which I suspect will be touching down in a couple of minutes time. But you talk about that. We talk about the technological advances made by Concorde for Concorde. But presumably, the technological advances had other spinoffs in other areas of flight. We've got another magnificent shot of one Concorde coming in to land and another Concorde sort of stacking up behind it. There must have been other technological advances, just like the moon landing glider gave us Teflon, for example. There must have been things associated with Concorde. Man 1: Oh, absolutely many. Not at least the worldwide prestige which it won for British aviation and British engineering. There's no doubt that the spinoff effect of Concorde is almost immeasurable. For instance, Airbus would not have been formed had it not been for the collaboration between England and France in the construction of this airplane. Another thing we haven't mentioned which is unique is the thrust of par when Concorde accelerates from the cruising speed of a normal jumbo to super-sonic speed. You literally go back in your seat like that. Interviewer: There she comes. Man 1: But this of course is absolutely the reverse process. Interviewer: Lovely. She is absolutely gorgeous when she comes in to land. She reminds me of some swan touching down on the lake or something. It's such an elegant, long-necked beautiful creature. Man 1: We haven't mentioned the droop snoot, the famous front nose which makes it possible to take off and land this airplane, which has an attitude so different from any other airliner.   John: The droop snoot is just so that the pilots can actually get a decent view of the runway with the nose up, the poor pilot coming in to land would have his view of the runway totally obscured. Interviewer: So it has to do it. In fact, I mean I tell you what I mean I want to pause us slightly because what we're seeing now is flight 002 and this is going to be the final Concorde. The people are going to sing, coming into land at Heathrow Airport. This is it. This is the end of an era. This the final one that we're going to see in the sky and I suspect it's got probably a minute a half left before it comes onto the runway and then taxis around. I think it will almost do a lap of honor around the airport to come onto the stand. John, just tell me what you're thinking now. John: I was actually thinking about the staff at Kennedy airport, the British airway staff who will miss it madly. They were fantastic to us. They whole of the port of the New York authorities and the air traffic controllers at Kennedy airport treated Concorde with tremendous help and assistance and cooperation. Interviewer: Tell me this, being a pilot on Concorde, were you treated as somehow, something different, a cut above the rest or almost? Or maybe the other pilots felt a little jealous of you to fly that beautiful thing. John: It wasn't us that were the cut above the rest. It was that airplane that was a cut above the rest. We were very, all we were the privilege pilots and flight engineers who were allowed to operate that airplane for all those years. Interviewer: Did you feel that? Here it comes now. John: I certainly feel that. There she comes. Just setting down. Oh, lovely. Interviewer: Puff of smoke from the wheels. John: Then, once that nose wheel touches down reverse thrust comes [inaudible 00:05:01]. Lovely sight. You can hear the reverse thrust coming through the studio. Oh my. Interviewer: So what is it, sadness, a feeling of pride, sadness? What is the mixture of emotions, John Hutchinson? John: Sadness for me. Pride that the airplane has achieved so much in its commercial life and it's demonstrated that supersonic flight is doable and that there are huge benefits to supersonic flight. I'm sure there will be a successor to Concorde at some stage. Interviewer: I had the misfortune as BBC's Paris correspondent when Concorde crashed in [inaudible 00:05:45] that evening. And there was a feeling then if Concorde would ever fly again. Did you think it was right to make all the investment in the aircraft to bring it back for what has been a relatively short period of time? John: I'll tell you what I do think very strongly indeed. I don't think British Airways should ever have grounded their Concordes. Interviewer: I think we can see the Union flag poking out of the window there. John: Yes. Interviewer: That's possible the most famous nose in the world. Just look at the people behind, the ground crew. They've probably all got other things they're meant to be getting on with but the whole airport, I suspect, at Heathrow has come to a halt for these three Concordes. John: Just to go back very briefly to what you were saying, if you cast your mind back you will remember that after that dreadful event of Paris, British Airways continued operating their Concorde for about three weeks with a whole lot of very tight checks and procedures agreed with the Civil Aviation Authority. It was eventually, I'm afraid, pressure mainly from France that ended up with the grounding of the airplane, which I believe was completely unjustified and slurred the reputation of a magnificent airplane.
