This year see's the 40th anniversaryof Finnair's service to JFK and today the new Airbus A330-300 replaces the MD-11.

On the 6th of April the First Finnair A330 starts the daily service on the HEL-JFK route, in the summer season the route will see a 10x weekly service. The A330 cabin also has received a revised look in both classes, with the rest of the fleet set to follow in about two years. The business class will see the fitment of fully-flat seats starting when the fifth A330 arrives in November. Yesterday (5th april) Finnair's old work horse the MD-11 said farewell to JFK after 17 years of service on the route. With all their MD-11's set to be retired from the fleet by next spring, some are to be given a new lease of life as Freighters. Now it seems Finnair's only MD-11 route next winter season will be the HEL-BKK.The MD-11's are set to be replaced by Eight A330-300's with five arriving later this year and the 3 remainder in 2010.Finnair also operate a fleet of five A340-300's.

Finnair opened the HEL-JFK service 40 years ago in May 1969,using the DC-8 operating via CPH and AMS. 1975 saw the start of non-stop flights with the introduction of the DC-10-30,in 1992 the route got upgraded with the MD-11 replacing the older Tri-jet.
