The Chance Vought F4U Corsair is the longest production run of any
piston-powered fighter in US history. First flown in 1942, the Corsair
was not initially popular due to its unsuitability for carrier
landings, earning it the name "bent wing widow-maker" due to numerous
landing incidents. However, its superior fighting performance earned
it the Japanese nickname of "Whistling Death", for the noise made by
airflow through the wing root-mounted oil cooler air intakes.
The specifications of the Corsair was indeed formidable. The R-2800 Double Wasp radial engine was supercharged to produce over 2000 horsepower at 20,000 ft altitude. Armament was 6 50-caliber machine guns making the Corsair effective against Japanese fighters - averaging an incredible 11-to-1 kill ratio.
This super scale PRE-Flight model of the Corsair is composed of almost 120,000 polygons - making it one of the most realistic models available. Total model size is over 17MB (8.8MB zipped). It has realistic operating landing gear and moveable controls. This model can be "painted" to reproduce any of the Corsairs of the 7 countries and 2 major conflicts where it found service.
