Prospect engine providers that are currently being looked at by Airbus include CFM International and International Aero Engines as the primary manufacturers. Currently, Airbus uses either the CFM 56-5 or the IAE V2500 as engine choices for its A320 model. These choices offer between 22,000-27,000 pounds of thrust and provide a 3,200nm range. If Airbus stays with these companies as their primary engine providers then chances are they will choose to move up the product line a level or so to allow for a greater range and better fuel economy among other improvements. Airbus has also mentioned tinkering with the idea of using this opportunity to do “other” possible upgrades to the aircraft. While this too is still plausible, it is expected by experts for the company to take this path.
Airbus is not the only company looking at possible upgrade solutions to already manufactured aircraft. Boeing also has stated that it is currently toying with the idea of “re-engining” its line of 737 aircraft and hope to have definitive answer by the end of the year.
