British Airways Cabin Crew Are Voting For Possible Industrial Action

Posted on Thu, 18 Mar 2010 09:00:00 GMT
British AirwaysBA cabin crew are voting to hold strikes over pay and working conditions in the next few weeks, with four out of every five members backing to strike.  Len McCluskey, assistant general secretary of Unite, said there had been an 80% vote in a ballot, this result shows that BA must work to rectify this as there is a deep sense of resentment among the staff.

81% of their members are still prepared to vote for this strike.

British Airways said the outcome of the ballot was disappointing and is completely uncalled for to threaten industrial action.

Unite will be holding a meeting of workers on Thursday when strike dates are set to be announced, although the union has ruled out taking action over the school Easter holidays.

British Airways 12,000 members of Unite voted for a second time after their first try to strike was blocked in a legal battle.

The strike was blocked after the union had balloted members who no longer worked for the airline. Unite lost a second legal case on Friday when it failed to argue the changes to working practices and reductions in crew numbers were considered to be unlawful. However, last year the cabin crew voted by more than nine to one in favour of strikes in a huge turnout of over 80%.

British Airways has been training other staff, including pilots, to take the place of cabin crew if the new strike goes ahead.
