JFK Runway Closes for Construction

Posted on
Runway 13 – 31, as known as the Bay Runway is 14, 500 ft or about 3 miles long. The Bay Runway is getting a much needed overhaul. The project started on March 1st, and will last four months long. It will widen the runway from 150 ft to 200 ft and add taxiways. It handles most of the departures out of JFK.

The project is estimated to cost $376 million and is expected to “reduce flight delays overall by an estimated 10,500 hours a year” according to the New York Governors Office.

Although the airliners are working with the airport and the Port Authority in reducing their schedules, the impact will surely still be felt.
JetBlue operates 170 scheduled flights daily out of JFK has reduced their schedule by 10%, working on a winter schedule. Other airliners, such as, American & Delta, who operate hubs out of JFK, hopes the project traffic congestion will only be minimal.

Veteran Air Traffic Controllers from the field say it’s something the surely needs to be done. Although the passengers will feel the impact they hope that it will be minimal. Their advice to passengers is to fly early in the day and be patient.

JFK ranks 22nd of 31 major US Airports in on-time departures and is the 13th busiest airport in the world in terms of passenger traffic.
