Virtual-NATO.org is a recognized member of the VATSIM SPECIAL OPERATIONS ADMINISTRATION (VSOA) which was established for members of VATSIM.net wishing to realistically pursue interests in Virtual Airlines, Military, and Paramilitary Organizations. Virtual-NATO strives to emulate real-world North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) flight operations by conducting on-line flight operations in accordance with VATSIM Special Operations policies. The Virtual-NATO staff and membership consists of dedicated multinational virtual pilots with a variety of real-world military and civilian aviation experience and knowledge. As with real-world NATO, Virtual-NATO is comprised of 28 countries which include, but are not limited to: Belgium, Canada, Denmark, France, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Italy, Luxembourg, the Netherlands, Norway, Poland, Portugal, Spain, Turkey, United States and the United Kingdom.
Virtual-NATO supports a broad range of aircraft and missions across three departments: NATO Airborne Early Warning (NAEW), Logistics, and NATO Response Force (NRF). Virtual-NATO NAEW forces are capable of providing a range of air surveillance, air support and reconnaissance over large distances and low altitudes, as well as supporting complex and tactical missions, such as air-to-air and air-to-ground control, airspace management, air policing, combat search and rescue, force marshalling and threat warning via E-3A/D AWACS, E-2 Hawkeye and TCA 707-329 aircraft. Virtual-NATO Logistics forces are capable of providing a variety of aerial refueling, cargo, passenger and VIP transport services via KDC-10, KC-767, KC-135, C-5, C-17, C-130, Citation 650/750, and C-40 737-700 aircraft. Virtual-NATO NRF forces are capable of providing an array of strike, intercept, interdiction and close air support services from land bases or aircraft carriers via F-16, F-18E, F-22, AV-8B Harrier, Tornado GR4, and Mirage 2000 aircraft.
