Located in the city of Sion in Switzerland, Sion Airport is one of the most breathtaking airfields in Europe. Located about 2.5 km southwest of Sion city in the Rhone Valley, the airport is located in the heart of the Valais Alps, a mountain range in the Swiss Alps.
Sion Airport was opened in 1935. With the looming outbreak of World War II, the airport was made a joint civilian military airfield in 1937. The airport was upgraded over the years, and today it operates two runways – a 2000-meter concrete runway and a 600-meter grass runway.
The airport is in close proximity to popular ski resorts, namely Zermatt, Crans-Montana, Verbier and Saas-fee. The airfield is also located near several thermal resorts and vineyards. The airport accommodates private aircrafts, private jets and business jets, as well as helicopters flying for holidays or business.
Due to its location, Sion Airport is also one of the most aeronautically challenging airfields in Europe.
