The Lavochkin LaGG-3 was built as the result of a requirement issued by the Red Air Force for a general purpose tactical fighter built primarily of plastic impregnated wood and powered by an 1100 hp liquid cooled in-line engine. Armed with a pair of 7.62mm machine guns and a single 20mm cannon, the LaGG-3 was pressed into combat when the Germans invaded the Soviet Union.
