| Hi, this question is regarding rcbco-20.zip. When you takeoff from the carrier does the catapult steam away like in real life? Also are there any sound effects from the catapult when you launch from it? |

Well, I got the soundset that you are using and the alternative panel since the ultimate tomcat site failed on me, where do I put these files now that I got them? _________________ If you're not armoured, dig deep. |

Not sure about the steam as i'm always in the cockpit for launch but there are sound effects of the cat launch and the trap! |

Tailhook i've had a look at my carrier2006 setup, when i select "carrier" in the country section in create a flight, the ocean flatten file box actually gives me a selection of 46 carriers of which only about 18 are there as you stated. I don't think i'll ever understand this carrier thing ! |

If you are looking for a good carrier that is scenery check out simviation.com and search FS2004 CVN65 DEMO Puerto Rico Carrier. Because it is only a demo there is only one location, but you still get a nice carrier. One other note is that there are no AI planes on the carrier. I imagine that if you put it together with rcbco-20.zip you will have a sweet naval aviation set-up! Now we can all rock like Tom Cruise in Top Gun! |

Sorry I'm a bit late, life gets in the way sometimes.
The panel:
This is a good find, I installed it too and discovered that it is ready for carrier launches and landings. Installation is easy:
After you've extracted the contents of the .zip file
1. place the fx file contained in the effects folder into fs9/effects
2. place the contents of the gauges folder (2 subfolders and 38 gauges) into fs9/gauges
3. place the contents of the sound folder (4 .wav files) into fs9/sound
4. place the GaugeSound.dll into the fs9 main directory.
Now open the F14BTomcat folder.
Copy and paste the panel folder into any jet fighter aircraft folder (the Viggen for example).
That's all. If the aircraft you use this panel with has a tailhook, it can now be launched off any carrier and land on any carrier.
If you wish to use the Viggen for carrier operations, backup the original aircraft.cfg and use this one instead:

The above aircraft.cfg file has been edited so now the Viggen has a virtual tailhook. You won't be able to see the tailhook but it is fully functional. I've tested it, you will be able to catch a wire and walk away alive
Of course you have to assign a key(combination) for the tailhook to function. <Shift+T> is an easy one to remember.
I've adjusted the spoiler_limit so it is more effective now.
In case you don't know, after extracting the contents of f-14_ge-f110-ge-400_the_real_deal.zip into a temporary folder, copy and paste the sound folder as it is into the aircraft of your choice. That's it.
If you have problems or something is unclear (due to my hazy mind), let us know and we'll sort it out.

Tailhook i've had a look at my carrier2006 setup, when i select "carrier" in the country section in create a flight, the ocean flatten file box actually gives me a selection of 46 carriers of which only about 18 are there as you stated. I don't think i'll ever understand this carrier thing ! |
Welshflyer this is a mystery indeed, could it be that we have two different packages with the same filename?
Your statement "I don't think i'll ever understand this carrier thing " is taking the shine away from your effort so far with carriers and the "Rcb gauge thing".
You've made it so easy, thanks a lot. It's easy to lose perspective considering the amount of instructions and steps contained in the file. Thanks to your encouragement I realized that the cat and arrcab functions could be installed without bothering with the rest to begin with.
I ran out of patience after a long day and I couldn't get the gauge to show up. Couldn't remember and couldn't be bothered to dig for the info that explains how to change the variables, so in the end I just pasted the section you posted earlier on into the .cfg and the gauge was there!
Been having heaps of fun since
Made a little discovery: I've had the F4U-7 Corsair in my hangar ever since it's been released and was aware that it has a tailhook. Haven't been able to use it for carrier ops though for obvious reasons until now. I was about to edit the panel.cfg to get the gauge into the cockpit when I found a second panel.cfg already prepared for carrier ops. What a beauty!!! Everything works like a charm. That Viking BTW is a good a/c to practice landings on the carrier - easy to control and slow enough to do tight corners without stalling.
My next project will be to put tailhooks on a B-17 and a C-130. |

I couldn't agree more with the carrier you're suggesting. It looks very good and is easy on the frames.
I haven't seen another freeware carrier which lets you choose between to cats and the elevator. |

I was just wondering if 3wire Aircraft Carrier Simulator v2 is a good alternative to rcbco-20.zip. Does anybody how it launches planes off of carriers compared to the rcbco-20 method? Is it easier to install? There are so many routes one can take in making carriers operational in Fs2004. Thanks! |

Well, as you've probably seen in the readme, the 3wire requires .NET FRAMEWORKv1.1. I was about to have a look at it when I realized that I already have deleted .NET FRAMEWORKv1.1. because I have v2.0 on my system.
Now the 3wire setup.exe won't recognize v2.0 and insists on v1.1
I don't know if there is a workaround - but if you have .NET FRAMEWORKv1.1., give it a try because the Operating Handbook will only materialize once you've run the .exe.
If your results are positive, fill us in. If not, get stuck into rcbco-20 - it's not that difficult after all. The idea is to move the contents of the Addon Scenery, Effects, Gauges, Modules and Sound folders into their respective destinations in fs9.
This process has to be done only once.
Now it's a matter of putting the gauge for launching and landing into one of your favourite panels. That's just a matter of editing the panel.cfg which has been described very well.
Now that you've got the cat gauge in your panel, choose an aircraft that already has a tailhook so you won't have to add one. That's it.
There's more to the rcbco-20 setup, but this is all you need to launch and land. |

After all the nice things we've been saying about RCB gauges i've hit a problem! I've downloaded a stunning A-4 Skyhawk but was'nt really happy with the panel so i changed it to one with a better overall view (as you do).I did everything the same as with every other panel i've used them with and do you think i can get the cat /tailhook gauge to appear? Not a chance, the meatball HUD i can get in the instrument/panel options, but no cat gauge.Oh and if you taxi too fast and it tips over ,it rolls forever and you have to reset FS9.
Apart from that it looks great! |

PS Tailhook, there's a new carrier download at Avsim. If you just type in Ark Royal in the search, you will get the "old" Ark from the 70's, our last "real" carrier (not the new crap heli/harrier thing). It's a bit of a bind to install but it's in 4 locations, the Med/Norway/Mayport and the Channel, and it comes with 2 options, aircraft on deck or not. Don't think you'd get a 747 off it though it seems much smaller than your US carriers !
Don't forget to download the updated AFCADS! Or start swimming. |
