    Although I've been a member for about two years, this is my first post, so I apologize in advance for any faux pas Very Happy

    According to what I've read at Boeing, Pratt & Whitney, and a slew of others, the rated thrust of the PW4062 is up to 62,000 lbs. Hoever, when I get even remotely close to this, my 744 will do what I call the "sideways boogy" while parked and/or idling on the tarmac or runway, even at max GW.

    Secondly, regardless of amount thrust, my 744 does a takeoff roll like a "speed junkie with a rocket up his butt" with respect to "settings" I'd like to get it at least a little closer to real-world conditions, so what should I change the thrust to in aircraft.cfg to, and is there any other settings in the file I need to change?

    I'm thinking I should paste a copy of my cgf file here, but I'm going to err on the side of caution and wait until a more senior member asks me to Smile

    W5PDA the first thing I'd do is delete the 'Flight Simulator Files' folder in 'My Documents' because it sounds like one of your 'Saved Flights' is dominating and influencing any new flight you want to create.
    To be thorough and thus go back to default behavior, I would strongly suggest to delete the fs9.cfg file as well. (Local Disk / Documents and Settings / User name / Application Data / Microsoft / FS9).

    I've never changed the thrust of the engines but my guess would be to change the value in the static_thrust line. This value seems to differ from a/c to a/c:

    Default 744: static_thrust = 56750

    A Posky742: static_thrust=54750.000000

    This:

    appears to be the same in each aircraft.cfg I've checked so far.

    I've dropped thrust to 56,750 lbs as suggested, and thrust_scalar is set at 1.0 the "sideways boogy" has stopped, but now the nose wheel occasionally "jumps" producing the smoke effect when "touching down."

    I've also emptied the application data folder. Even with your help, I'm still stumped, so I'm going to paste a copy of the cfg file in the hope that it'll shed some some more light on it.

    My aircraft doesn't display the "sideways boogy" without any modifications. I don't think there is a problem with the configuration file.

    Each aircraft was written using drag, thrust, weight and many other variables. Changing thrust in the aircraft config file effects other items of the aircraft. You're basically rewriting the program of that aircraft. If you don't know what you're doing, you can do more harm than good. Aircraft from different developers use slightly different data, that may differ from real word, in the attempt to achieve the best mix. It's not something that lends itself to random changes.

    Before you screw up the file, let's try to make sure that your aircraft needs modification. Set the default 747 at KSEA on runway 34L. No weather, default weight, 10 degrees of flaps. From full power to the 177 KIAS (Vr) Rotation speed takes about 40 sec. and uses about 6000 ft. of the 9600 ft. runway. The time and the runway distance seem correct for this aircraft. Ensure that the simulation rate is set to normal. How long does it take on your system?

    It's best to exit fs9 before you make changes. Then do what I told you above: delete the 'Flight Simulator Files' folder in 'My Documents'.

    Then, if you can't find the fs9.cfg which should simply be deleted, you can instead go:

    Start - All Programs - Microsoft Games - Microsoft Flight Simulator 2004 - Troubleshooting - Reset Defaults.

    This action will have the same result as deleting the fs9.cfg that is, as the name suggest, change all your settings back to default. That includes the keyboard assignments you might have changed or added, basically everything you have changed in 'Settings' in the game with the exception of any scenery you might have added.

    To lose those settings is a small price to pay in exchange for well behaved aircraft. So- once you've done that, test fly the aircraft in question. This is the default 744 as I can see from the aircraft.cfg. If you (hopefully) backed up the original aircraft.cfg, use that for starters. If you don't have the original, I'll post it for you.

    So to remind you, before editing any .cfg file, always keep a copy of the original. If you do that, you can edit and experiment and mess around as much as you like; after all it's YOUR sim/game. Contrary to what some would have you believe, this is a sim/game -NOT- reality, it was conceived for our enjoyment. Cool

    I did exit FS9 before emptying the folder. I also deleted the files from My Docs as you suggested. I may not be the brightest bulb in the box, but even I know better than that <g>.

    I'm slowly lowering the thrust until I find a level that not only prevents the "sideways boogy" but the "touchdown" effect as well.

    I'm also going to try the default KSEA flight as suggested by CRJCapt as well, and will keep you all posted Smile

    Lastly, I have vague memories of a 744 cfg file out there somewhere that cures my "speed junkie with a rocket up his butt" analogy/problem, but one problem at a time, eh?

    It is said that the solution to one's problem is often right under their nose.
    This old saying couldn't be more apropos in the case of my 744/PW4062 problem Very Happy

    I found the solution to my problem in a file here at Fly Away, specifically http://flyawaysimulation.com/downloads-file-278-details.html

    This file corrects what appears to be "fundamental" errors in FS9's default 744 .cfg and .air files. But as I said in the comment I made on this file, it's only drawback is in that you have to start lowering your rate of climb sooner than you'd have to if you were using the default 744 cfg/air files.

    Well, I never... wasn't aware that someone (well, not just 'someone' but the one and only Pedro Oliveira) had gone through the trouble to fix the default .cfg and Airfile, all the way back in 2003.
    I'm personally offended that on the download page (your link) under 'Additional Download Details' it boldly states: "Author: Unknown" -- doesn't anyone check the uploads around here?

    So Pedro actually dared to mess with the original .cfg and Airfiles and changed the static_thrust from 56750 all the way up to 62100... ouch; another myth shattered, another religion down the gurgler.

    I'm not sure I'd be able to notice the difference with these improved files - the only freeware 747s I've been flying are the Poskys. I always thought that the default 747, 737 etc were deliberately 'made easy to fly' which would obviously result in loss of realism.

    The default ATC expects us to descend and climb at a minimum rate of 1800 which principle the default aircraft obey. It's not rocket science to figure out that this is very unrealistic.

    Regardless, I'm very tempted to fly a few legs with these improved files if only I could find a decent 3rd party paint job.

    To be more specific about the problem climbing, I tried to climb to 42,000' (Within design limits of 45,000") the nose starts pitching up around 37,500-38,000 depending on speed and payload, which is no big deal to me, because I solved my main problems of the "sideways boogy" and "speed junkie with a rocket up his butt" now it does a more realistic takeoff roll Very Happy
