Remember this?
I wasn't sure whether to post this in the 'Music' topic or here in the 'Movies'. It works both ways if all you're ever intersted in is a "YouTube-Quick-Fix".
Deliverance http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=esl2NNOtHQE
That is the 'Dueling banjos' scene.
"Widely acclaimed as a landmark film, Deliverance is the story of four suburban professional men from Atlanta on a weekend canoe and camping trip. The film is noted for the memorable music scene near the beginning that sets the tone for what lies ahead: a trip into unknown and potentially dangerous territory. In the scene, set at a rural gas station, character Drew Ballinger plays the instrumental "Dueling Banjos" on his guitar with a mentally-challenged hillbilly youth named Lonnie (implied as being an inbred albino in the novel, portrayed by Billy Redden in the film). The boy eventually outplays Drew with his banjo. The song won the 1974 Grammy Award for Best Country Instrumental Performance.
The film was selected by the New York Times as one of "The Best 1,000 Movies Ever Made," whilst the viewers of Channel 4 in the United Kingdom voted it 45 in a list of The 100 Greatest Films."

Everybody seems to be hooked on 'Grey's Anatomy' and 'Plastic Housewives' -- what's the world coming to?
How about watching a classic movie for a change?
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sXldafIl5DQ
Amazing what a decent director and imaginative composer can create. Sadly the YouTube clip doesn't do the musical score which is quite haunting any justice. If you would like to know what it really is supposed to sound like, wrap your ears around this:

The Wikipedia lowdown on the movie can be found HERE.

Seeing that not much is happening in the sky we might as well go to the movies.
These two guys are on a mission from God.
The Blues Brothers
Here's a trailer for those who haven't seen it:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tjGfnsjdJec
This is what happened in the tunnel when Jake's Ex catches up with the brothers thirsting for revenge:
| Quote: |
[after a burst of gunfire from the Mystery Woman, Jake climbs to his feet, covered in mud from the tunnel floor]
Jake: It's good to see you, sweetheart.
Mystery Woman: You contemptible pig! I remained celibate for you. I stood at the back of a cathedral, waiting, in celibacy, for you, with three hundred friends and relatives in attendance. My uncle hired the best Romanian caterers in the state. To obtain the seven limousines for the wedding party, my father used up his last favor with Mad Pete Trullo. So for me, for my mother, my grandmother, my father, my uncle, and for the common good, I must now kill you, and your brother.
[Jake falls to his knees]
Jake: Oh, please, don't kill us. Please, please don't kill us. You know I love you baby. I wouldn't leave ya. It wasn't my fault.
Mystery Woman: You miserable slug! You think you can talk your way out of this? You betrayed me.
Jake: No I didn't. Honest... I ran out of gas. I, I had a flat tire. I didn't have enough money for cab fare. My tux didn't come back from the cleaners. An old friend came in from out of town. Someone stole my car. There was an earthquake. A terrible flood. Locusts. IT WASN'T MY FAULT, I SWEAR TO GOD.
[Elwood covers his head in anticipation of more gunfire, Jake removes his sunglasses to make a wordless appeal, and the Mystery Woman visibly softens]
Mystery Woman: Oh, Jake... Jake, honey...
[Jake embraces the Mystery Woman and they kiss]
Jake: [to Elwood] Let's go.
[He drops the Mystery Woman and walks off]
Elwood: [to the Mystery Woman as he steps past her] Take it easy. |
Here's another clip where the Blues Brothers perform 'I'm a Soul Man'...
If you watch Elwood (the tall cat) dancing you'll understand whom Michael Jackson was trying to emulate... except he could never get it quite right

This movie is all about entertainment, some like the music, some like the dialogues, some like the car chase and some like the Blues Mobile.
I like the lot
There's plenty of info available, just google for it. _________________ "It is universally accepted that an admission of atheism would be instant political suicide for any presidential candidate."

Definetly the car chase...I think the movie still holds the record for the most amount of cars wrecked in a movie _________________

The Mission
A brilliant flick based on events surrounding the Treaty of Madrid in 1750, in which Spain ceded part of Jesuit Paraguay to Portugal.
Very touching in many ways and thought provoking. What were those Popes and Bishops thinking?? Those who have read history will easily be able to relate to the story.
The musical score is by the great Ennio Morricone. There is a short synopsis here at Wikipedia: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Mission_(film)
Connoisseurs of good film making will not go past this for many reasons. I wasn't sure which YouTube clip to pick, so here's a short one for the impatient -- for the patient there are many more... or, you could just watch the whole movie
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fawtIF-SPM4
For me, the most moving scene in the movie has always been where the Chief of the natives asks the Cardinal whether God had changed his mind...

Great flick Tailhook,I've seen it quite a few times already, found it very realistic, and even shed a tear there the first time I watched it.
But before I get a bit too soppy, I thought this movie might add a mention,
But mostly for the music - still gives me goose bumps when I hear it

You've made my day warlord, thanks for bringing up this movie. The Last of the Mohicans
Never seen it and forgotten of its existence. Of course read the first stories in comic books and later the original by Fenimore Cooper. A classic in the true sense. I'll definitely get the DVD, but first I'll read the book again.
I'll be looking forward to the musical score by Randy Edelman -- thanks for an unexpected surprise |
