I am getting into the Jet Ranger in FSX and it is tricky at first, likely cause I'm a real world fixed wing pilot and am used to the theory of that. But with a little practice it gets easier. Still not sure about approaches and touching down on a spot as I tend to land short, or over shoot my target, it seems you need to rock the aircraft back to get zero ground speed and I seem to recall this from a ride along on our local police helo. I just get the darn thing stopped and it goes backwards as I try to touch down. I'd love to find a collective and cyclic set for sim, that would work better than the CH Yoke I''ve got now. The CH quadrant doesn't seem to work very well in fling wings either, I find the levers on the yoke are much better is not at all realistic. If you happen to see an all white Jet Ranger around the base at Area 51 near Rachel Nevada in sim, that would be me. _________________ Capt Scott Tailwheel

I tried the CH Yoke for choppers and there was just "no-way" - I purchased the Logitech Force3d Pro and it solved the cyclic problem, however, in hover, you have to constantly work the throttle - with the "joystick", you can make the subtle adjustments before the chopper gets out of hand - its a thing of "anticipation" and moving cyclic forward before you start moving backwards. Been flying choppers about four months now and it's getting much easier. Yes, I agree with you - I also wish some vendor would come out with a cyclic/collective set-up - would add realism and make it much easier.

I do recall seeing a collective/cyclic combo a few years ago for sim. I was hoping someone might see the post and twig their memory on where to get one. I think it had rudders as well. I've already got the CH Rudders which do help a lot in the whole Heli sim thing. Be nice to be able to set up a set of controls for Heli as well as fixed wing. ( Just did a quick Goggle on sim controls but it looks like most are homebuilt by NASA engineers, or very expensive, I'll leave it up to someone in here to recll where the cheapies are hidden??) _________________ Capt Scott Tailwheel

Yes, I did the search also and found the same results...hokey or just way too pricey. Again, I found the Logitech Joystick the "answer for now" - I am using the Bell412 (www.hovercraft.com) and it's a beautiful craft, vc cockpit is super and it was built with control characteristics that are superb to the FSX craft - AND it's one of the biggest challenges to hover - flying is a dream though. You may want to check it out - it's free in the downloads section - IF you do try it, let me know and I'll tell you how you "MUST" start it and keep it running. When I first tried it, after a brief time, about 5 minutes, the engines started smoking and down I would go. Well, it's great now.

Ya know like a lot of people in here, I've never mastered the art of adding downloads... Just too old to learn new tricks I guess. The whole download process seem very complex and I'm a little nervous given how prone to problems the existing FSX program is. I wish there was a simple click to complete the download automaticaly or a disc you could order with all the downloads available, then you could add what you want like prefered aircraft and scenery options. Otherwise I'm stuck with what the folks at microsoft gave me in FSX. _________________ Capt Scott Tailwheel

That's exactly what it is, a guess. You're depriving yourself of one of the greatest joys that can be derived from the sim. Don't be shy to ask, just take it a step at a time. Try this rather recent guide and take your time.
http://www.simviation.com/fsxaircraftinstall.htm
Regarding the file from HoverControl as suggested by cthiggin, it is likely that you won't need to do any 'unzipping' or 'extracting' at all, as many of their more recent files come wrapped in a self-installer (it's the same thing as an .exe file) which means all you have to do is double-click on the downloaded .exe file and follow the prompts.
I usually don't like endorsing those self-installers because if they're not compiled correctly, they can create havoc.
HoverControl is a different cookie though... you can trust their installers.
This should get you started, however, I would strongly suggest to make an effort to gradually get your head around the manual installation process. _________________ "It is universally accepted that an admission of atheism would be instant political suicide for any presidential candidate."

Yes - the Hovercontrol 412 is self-extracting.
IMO, if you like, or are into, or are comtemplating getting into choppers, the Hovercontrol is just a beautiful craft. It's worth it all just for the Virtual Cockpit.
As stated earlier - the "HC412" is a very very hard craft to fly (hover) as it is set up by the maker, Jordan Moore, to replicate a chopper as close to realism, but in FSX. I will tell you this - the first four hours, I could NOT hover at all - could fly fine, but now, I do "pretty well", some of the time on hovering. - But, if you "like or welcome" a challenge with a beautiful craft with flying realism, this is IT.
IF any of you do d'load, there is a certain procedure to start in FSX - FS9 was different for the HC412. Just shout and I'll tell you what you need to do. The HC forum members helped me out. IF you do not follow the procedure, you will take off and in about five minutes smoke bellows out of the turbines and down you go.
It's also good to look around the Hovercontrol Site - lots of good info and videos. This site is the premier helicopter sim site world-wide.
Hope some of this may help.

Check out this link: http://www.hotseatinc.com/
Hotseat offers a helo simulator with collective, cyclic, and antitorque pedals. Very nice but I suspect very expensive. With their base model starting at around $1000.00 I would suspect in the $2000.00 US range for the helo setup.
Living next door to a stage field for Fort Rucker (US Army Aviation Tranining Center) I see helos everyday. After 20 years in the area I still stop to stare as they fly over.
Some of my best real-life flying experiences have been as a passenger in helocopters. A couple of weeks ago I got to fly in a 1967 H-23. We took the doors off a skimmed the tree tops at a blazing top speed of 65 mph. big fun. |

I love flying helos, its all about precision and slow gentle control.
Flying the Merlin, CH47 & AH-15 cobra mostly. I do alot of carrier
landings, i find it good practice. I use a logitech gamepad for its
dual thumbsticks, it allows me to control the pitch and roll with the left stick and the rudder with the right, it makes flying helos a joy |

No! The X52 is the king of helicopter control!!!
Kidding- whatever works best for you. You're so right about slow, gentle control & precision.
The Merlin's good, isn't it?! _________________ "Any landing you walk away from is a good landing" ...well, that's my excuse and I'm sticking to it... |

Lee198,
Hello friend.
Does the Saitek X52 have "trim" controls on it?
As stated in earlier posts about helio's, I'm using the Logitech Force3D Pro, which is good/ok, but just not precision enough for the helio's I'm flying now. I need a much more "precision" joystick and I was thinking the Saitek would be the "best". What do you think?
Thanks,
cthiggin |

Hi Cthiggin!
The X52 does have trim wheels, but they don't work on helos. That being said, the flight control system is so precise that trim isn't needed. It really is a perfect system for flying helos and I'm glad I picked it.
