Tabbing is making tabs. Tabs = Tablatures. It's like music but simpler as I cannot read music, even though I've been playing for 5 years. -_-"

www.ultimate-guitar.com go to that website and search up a song that you want to play on guitar and see what tabs are like.

Well I've been playing guitar and bass on and off, for about 12 years or so, although drums are my prefered instrument, why not just try play along with the music? Just keep practising it over and over till you get it down pat.

It's strange though. I can play really well when I have tabs in front of me but I just can't figure out music.

Ah, yes...the BIGGEST failure of 90+% of all guitar teachers...not teaching students to read music. And why not? The guitar is a composition instrument like the piano! It covers both treble clef and bass clef notes and can play chords! This failure of guitar teachers who are either too lazy or (more likely) cannot read music themselves is a HUGE dis-service to the musical community! My 1st advice: Learn to read music on the guitar.

    Secondly:
Can you play by ear? If so, you can tab it yourself. If you have any extra $, you can also buy a TASCAM MP-GT1 or similar device; and put the MP3 of the song in there, slow it down..and figure it out that way. Then write your own tab.

Truth is, if you can't read music and you must rely on tabs, you should at least train yourself to be able to write them yourself. In the least, you'll be able to spot the mistake in tabs written by others. Then you'll be able to make sure that YOU are always playing the song right.

Yeah, well. I'm not the smartest person. Actually, I'm quite stupid and VERY lazy. I started to play guitar at age 10 and started off with an acoustic. My guitar teacher then encouraged me to learn music and taught me how to read it. I couldn't read it... I just couldn't do it. I have an extremely low concentration span, too which may also be a cause for this problem.

After that, I stumbled upon tabs which I have been relying on. Soon, in the guitar world, Tabs will slowly replace music as the main way of playing songs and it's already happening. It's not much a shame, as these Tabs that I read have the music notes above the tabs.

My guitar teacher is not a failure, if it wasn't for him I'd probably would've quit guitar by now! He's made my passion for guitar grow tremendously and I am very eager to get to my guitar lesson every week.

I just suck at tabbing a guitar backing which is quite hard to hear. Watch that video and see if YOU can pick up any of the notes under the ocarina or whatever that main instrument is.

Dude.. don't rely on tabs for answers... tabs only tell you where to put your fingers, they don't tell you HOW to play the song. Take it from this 15+ year veteran bass player... learn to read sheet music. It will come in more handy in the long run and make you way more valuable as a guitarist than the next guy.

Well, if sheet music is those things on the lines, I can only do that on the Trombone. If tabs are just the notes, no spaces or lines or stuff like that... I use tabs. Better learn sheet music then...

I think sheet music is rather easy once you get the basics, I can't play any instruments for my life (except snare drums) and I can read music, so try and get the basics, like EGBDF Every Good boy deseveres fruit or something like that to remember it for lines and FACE for the spaces Wink

For the guitar the thing is Eat A Darn Good Breakfast Every Day.

That's what my guitar teacher says.

Well, let's be fair, OK? I've played woodwinds (clarinet & sax), piano, drums, guitar, and bass...so I think I can say with some small amount of authority that guitar is NOT an easy instrument to learn. Personally, I find it harder than piano. You're probably not nearly as stupid as you think you are.

I didn't mean to imply that YOUR specific guitar teacher is a failure. I've never met him or heard him. I'm sure he's a better player than I am. I was only saying that I've seen many guitar teachers not even TRY to teach their students to read actual sheet music; using the excuse that the students won't ever need to know it.
