There’s an Avsim mission “mercrescue”, or “Mercenary Rescue Mission”, with a DC3. However, there’s no info in the Briefing on which heading to fly after takeoff; and there’s no Map, nor is there an in-flight arrow, any comm., or whatever.
Does anyone know how to begin this mission?
Many thanks,
Martin |

Hi Folks
mpf858 -
When you initially takeoff
you need to reach 500' AGL before the instructions are given.
For anyone else -
Jim Keir's Mercenary Rescue Mission ( updated April 2008 version )
EDIT -
Please note, this mission requires Acceleration, (currently it won't work with just SP2).

Thanks! I'll try that. I was staying under the storm clouds.

Hmmmm. I went all the way up to 18kft without receiving any info. Reinstalled the mission - same results.
Do I have to activate some radio frequency? - no info on that in Briefing.
Thanks,

Hi Folks
Martin -
Which OS, FSX version, & FSX service pack, are you using ?
Look at your Task Manager,
is SimVar.exe running ?
ISTR
If it's not running,
there's a warning message across the top of the screen ?
If you've installed correctly,
as per default and instructions -
On startup you should get the message -
| Quote: |
| Morning. I hope you've had your coffee, we've got a long day ahead and you need to be awake. Get us off the ground and head ............. |
Did you get that ?
At 500' AGL you will have triggered follow-on dialogs.

Thank you, Paul.
I have FSX Deluxe SP2 (vs. Acceleration) on XP/2002 Prof 5.01 (SP3).
With FSX running, SimVar.exe appears as a Process with 0 CPU. I'm not sure what ISTR means (other than that it probably stands for instrument...). There is no warning message. Finally, when this mission is launched, there is no such message as you describe. I've removed the program (with the Control Panel) and reinstalled it twice with no change. The mission folder (within the folder "Jim") appears normal. I have run perhaps 40-50 other misssions without problems.

Hi Folks
Martin -
ISTR == I seem to recall.
Cheers for your info.
ISTR some Vista user's having problems.
Did you install to the default location ?
i.e.
WHATEVER\Microsoft Flight Simulator X\Missions\Jim\WildGeese\
Note
That Jim is in the root of the mission's folder structure,
not in Backcountry, Pilot for Hire, etc.
though I don't recall if there's any path dependency.
In case it's a .wav format issue.
Do you have 'Show captions' turned on ?
Are any displayed ?
Look at the messages section on the kneeboard,
are any messages being displayed there ?

With or without the folder "Jim" makes no difference.
With or without checking "Show Captions" makes no difference.
And there's nothing of intrest in the Kneeboard.
"Mission Briefing" says "There is no briefing for this flight."
I'm sooo sorry!

Hi Folks
Martin -
In the WildGeese folder
what date is the file named Geese.spb ?
If Geese.spb is not 5th April 2008
download & install the update from the link in my initial post.
In the FSX mission selection dialog,
when 'Mercenary Rescue' is selected in the list,
is the button titled 'Go To Briefing'
or is it 'Fly Now' ?
I've PM'd Jim,
requesting him to take a peek at this thread.
It may be a couple of days before he responds.

Yes, the Geese.spb date is 4/5/08.
Yes, the mission has the "Go to Briefing" button, and it works.
Many, many thanks again, Paul. |

Hi Folks
Martin -
Please clarify,
do you mean the button titled 'Go To Briefing' works,
or the mission now works ?
In the folder \WildGeese\
using notepad or another text editor
open the file titled Kajiji.FLT
Scroll to the bottom of the file
to the section titled
[ObjectFile]
File=WHATISHERE
What is the value ?

Thank you again, Paul, for hanging in here with me.
The "Go to Briefing" button takes me to the Briefing, but the mission doesn't work.
In the WildGeese folder, there is no Kajiji.Flt file. I've examined ALL files in the folder, and there is no WHATISHERE.

Hi Folks
Martin -
The mission won't work if you haven't got a .flt file.
From the mission's briefing page -
Click the "Fly Now" button.
What airport does it take you to ?
It should be FZCK, Kajiji airport, Bandundu, Congo (Kinshasa)
What's the name of your .flt file ?
If you haven't got an Kajiji.Flt file
you either haven't -
- Got the update version, as posted in my top post.
- Set your filemanager to view all files.
- Not installed correctly, for whatever reason.
- Or some bizarre unknown issue I can't think of.
WHATISHERE - i.e. What Is Here, a placeholder value
for whatever text is in your .flt file at -
[ObjectFile]
File=What_Is_Here
It should be -
File=Geese
Again in the .flt file -
What is the value in -
[ResourcePath]
Path=WHAT_IS_YOUR_RESOURCE_PATH_HERE
It should be -
Path=\Missions\Jim\WildGeese
