I have a friend at work who has flown gliders. He says that following the tow plane is the hardest part of learning. He said that there is a tendency to oversteer, and you put yourself into big swooping turns that are difficult to recover from (probably annoys the tow plane pilot, too  ). He said that every time he would get out of control like that, the instructor would have to get him out of it.

I know this is not exactly what you were hoping to find. But this might still be of interest, definitely worth looking at closely. It might be just that different flying experience.

Yes, that would be nice. There's an idea for a add on, FS Glider. You could have aerial tow aircraft, car launches and catapult launches. It could feature realistic thermals and measure you endurance, distance and max. altitude. It could have a realistic variometer, tow rope failures and tow aircraft wake turbulence.
