New Easter Plane-Spotting Photos from Auckland!

After hearing on my scanner that Auckland International (NZAA) had switched the active runway from 23L to 23R (A Taxiway) I jumped in my car and made my way down to the airport as soon as I could for another plane spotting session. The reason I was so excited was because the flightpath of all the inbound airport would be really really close to the lookout area, much closer than before, and therefore I would hopefully get some great photos.

It was pretty late in the afternoon when I arrived, and as the sun was setting, I got some excellent shots of the light reflecting off some fuselarges. When I got home and checked the camera, some of the pictures looked so good that like they had been edited already, but I can assure you that none of them have!

1) Air New Zealand Boeing 747 taxing for takeoff on Runway 23R

2) Air New Zealand Q300 Dash on finals

3) This shot of the landing ANZ Boeing 767 was an accidently zoomed in to close, but I thought I'd use it anyway as it shows the aircraft detail quite well

4) The same Air New Zealand Boeing 767 metres above the ground, just about to touch down

5) Another Air New Zealand Boeing 767 taxing for takeoff

6) A Qantas 767 arriving all the way from Nadi, Fiji

7) Britten Norman Islander, ZK-SFK owned by Commercial Helicopters Limited

8 ) Air New Zealand Airbus A320 on finals, reflecting the evening sun

9) Air New Zealand Boeing 737 with flaps down

10) Another close shot of Air New Zealand Boeing 737

11) Last of all was the "Germany 2006" Emirates Boeing 777 which seems to be a regular vistor over here

Thats all of them for now, I might convert a few of them into splashcreens in the futute. 😂

If you havn't seen them yet, check out my other plane-spotting photos here: https://forum.flyawaysimulation.com/forum/topic/10806/my-plane-spotting-photos-from-auckland-international/

Enjoy!

Excellent shots CT, looks like 23R will be in operation for a while due to 23L maintenance, have a look at the link below:

We are going up to Auckland sometime next week, I'm hoping to spend the day at AKL seen as my camera has a pathetic 2x optical zoom. I've been looking forward to maintenance on 23L for some time!

Excellent shots once again, CT! 👍

Cool thanks for the info Jarred, I was just about to e-mail the airport and ask them what the deal was!

If you come up to Auckland I might see ya- be sure to bring your scanner along, lots of people at the look out have them 😉

And lastly, please upload your pic's to the forums you take- I'm looking foward to seeing them!

As for uploading to airliners.net- nah, it takes to long and I can't be bothered, lol 🙄

Major developments in the next 20 years include:

• Dual runways with both runways and new taxiways jet-capable.
• 24 million passengers per annum forecast by 2025.
• Major extensions and upgrading of the international terminal along with improved retail and passenger processing facilities.
• A new domestic passenger terminal, aprons and gates located immediately north of the present international.
• A new control tower to service the parallel runways system.
• Enhanced apron and terminal facilities for both runways.
• A cross-taxiway system to link the two runways.
• redevelopment of the freight facilities and the creation of a precinct for freight in the position of the current domestic terminal.
• At least two hotel facilities - one budget traveller accommodation and the second a four-to-five star hotel in the terminal precinct.
• Improved transport links with Auckland and Manukau cities.
• A transport hub within the airport precinct.
• Further development of the key property portfolio areas of commercial, business, recreational, aviation support and shopping

Quite simply, it looks impressive. Only question I have - will it go ahead? 😂

Lets hope so, this is the 20 year plan, and they still have 19 years left to do all the things mentioned on the list.

I'm just wondering if they need to build the extra runway with extra length for the Emirates A380's?

Pro Member Captain

I don't think they will need to extend the runway at AKL for the A380, I've done some research on the net and came across the following, however they may need to widen the shoulder a little:

Scroll down to the bit near the bottom titled 'Airbus A380'.

Oh True!

Thanks for the link,

Is that why runway 23L is being worked on at NZAA at the moment, to acomidate for the A380?

Well if you can understand this, good on you! Looks like a major reconstruction project going on currently at 23L/05R, and somewhere on the net there could be that work plan.

I e-mailed the NZAA helpdesk to ask what was going on, and today they replied by saying:

We are flying runway 23R/05L at the moment as we are finishing the last stages of our runway pavement rehabilitation project up near the 05R end. At the same time we are completing the A380 shoulder widening near the western end and also carrying out some airfield lighting work at the eastern end of the closed runway.
The project (R6) started on 26th March and is due to be completed on 21 May

you guys are lucky that you see other "real" enthusiasts at your observation area. at cincinnati international, its all a bunch of toddlers and slack jawed kentuckians who don't even know the difference between a crj and a 747. i take my scanner and people come and get in my car windows so they can listen.

Or people pointing at planes thinking they know the model, where they probably couldnt tell the difference between an A320 and DC-3, and getting it wrong. That's really annoying! 😂

LOL, No I was not sorry. I am fairly new to the country and don't understand all this city rivalry business.

Perhaps I should have said "down here' as NZ is down under after all.

Seriously though, the people you will find at the NZAA look-out are normally a bunch of Indian families (not meant to be racist), a few people like me with cameras and scanners, but the majority of the crowd are people parked in their cars having lunch, which come and go every few minutes. It's quite a nice atmosphere actually 😉
