I'ved used a Core 2 Duo 1.86GHz along with an ATI 2600 XT graphics card. My results with FSX have been in the grade C- to the occasional D+ range.
I'm considering doing an upgrade on the processor to a Core 2 Duo 3.0Ghz and either 8600 or 8800 GT cards. Havent decided on whether or not there would be much of a difference between either of these cards...
what do you all think?

In regards to a new GFX card you might find these comparisons which concern FSX SP2 in particular interesting:

Regarding the processor you seem to be on the right track. In a recent article I read that Intel's Core Duo is actually better than their Quad Core for reasons I have yet to grasp but which made sense when I read it.
Apparently of real importance is the clock speed and 3.0Ghz sounds pretty good. To see which one is the fastest I'd suggest to look at another comparisons table of Core Duo processors.
Oh yes, 1GB of RAM won't do the job especially when you're running Vista. _________________

In that case the RAM can wait (heard many claims that FSX runs fine on 2Gigs). Get your processor and GFX card sorted out first. If you have some cash left after that, get more RAM. _________________
