    Auto pilot
that holds the heading. like it tells me to hold at 6,000ft. i put auto pilot on and it just holds the wings straight but i still decrease in altitude

ALT Hold on the Autopilot will maintain(or level off at) the selected altitude. Smile

    I tried that.

ATC told me to hold at 17,000. I put autopilot on + alt hold and it brought me down to like 16,500 and they terminated my IFR

    Need more information from you.
    1. Which aircraft and program?
    2. What is the exact sequence that you're using to setup the AP?
    3. Did you set 17000 in the altitude select window?

In order for the AP to hold altitude, you have to tell it what altitude you want. There should be a altitude pre-select window to input the desired altitude. Smile

try resetting your altimeter. is it set to the right barometric pressure. that effect the AP.
