Current speculation is they ran out of fuel.
According to one of the pilots on the USAir virtual site, British Airways is notorious for being stingy with gas. |
I don't believe that for one minute, what about having enough fuel to divert to an alternate airport plus 40 minutes extra! |

According to the pilots all the power went out and the gear just fell off the aircraft. That's weird! |
Hi VF i think you'll find the gear did'nt fall off but was torn off on the grass! It would be a major issue if the pilot lowered the gear and it fell off, and would bring many questions on the BA maintainance dept ! |

Rofl, what does that have to do with this? o_O
Also, Three cheers to the pilots and crew. Apparently they were very professional in this situation. _________________

Well, here's the BBC on the subject:
http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/uk_news/england/london/7208126.stm
I think it seems clear that the a/c had not run out of fuel, and the whole idea that BA is "stingy with gas" is a nonstarter. That just isn't how things work - there are rules about how much fuel a plane must carry. The captain can demand more fuel, but not less than regulatory requirements.
I like the idea of the "gear falling off", though. Can you imagine the scene in the cockpit:
PF: Gear down.
PNF: Gear down....Three green. Oh damn, the gear fell off again! I really do need to have a word with Bob in Maintenance about that! Third time this week![/i] _________________ You can't spell "manslaughter" without "laughter" |

HOLY CRAP!!!!!
You all are gonna think me to be completely nuts... but I dreamed this exact same thing a couple nights ago! Only difference is I could not identify the airport or airline. but the same exact thing happened in my dream, and I saw it all. freaky huh?
I am glad they made it (relatively) safely. A 777, this could have gotten REAL BAD real quick!
Someone buy those pilots a drink, and up their pay. |
You havent seen the movie "final destination" by any chance? |

| Rent it out if you can - but basicaly, the main actor has a preminition of getting on a 747 with class mates, taking off and then exploding (with a great amount of detail) then he wakes up, the plane has not taken off yet, so he gets off with a bunch of friends who some of which dont believe him, then looking out the airport window they all see the plane explode infront of them, and for the rest of the movie "death" is out to claim each of them in the order that they were to die in, in the aircraft. But really..see the movie! It'll make more sense. |
