Commercial flights should begin in 2006 after 15 months of testing. During much of ist development, the aircraft was known as the Airbus A3XX. The A380 is now the largest passenger airliner, topping the Boeing 747, which was the largest for 35 years. However, the Antonov An-225 retains the record of being the world's largest commercial aircraft. The media has termed the A380 a "superjumbo", with some comparing it to Howard Hughes's Spruce Goose. The first A380 prototype was unveiled during a ceremony in Toulouse, France, on January 18, 2005. Its manufacturer's serial number is 001, and is registered as F-WWOW. The new Airbus will initially be sold in two versions: the A380-800, carrying 555 passengers in a three-class configuration or up to 800 passengers in a single-class economy configuration. Expected range for the -800 model is 8,000 nautical miles (14,800 km). The second model, the A380-800F dedicated freighter, will carry 150 tons of cargo 5,600 miles (10,400 km). Airbus made the cockpit layout, procedures and handling characteristics similar to those of other Airbus aircraft to reduce crew training costs. Likewise, the A380 features a glass cockpit and side-stick flight controller. Panel, gauges, model, sound and textures by A. Meye.

Having had the personal enjoyment of a flight on the real Airbus A380, I decided to give this a mod a shot to see what kind of depth it could bring to the table. I’ve used more than my fair share of mods for this aircraft across the years but decided that with this new mod being released, it was only going to be fair to try the mod out.

The aircraft itself played a bit of a major role in my senior introduction to flight simulation. Having enjoyed aircraft simulation as a passive enjoyment in the early 00s, I decided to try out it more having spent hours reading about this model in the newspaper and online. So, why did it convince me to get into aviation? What made this particular aircraft so spectacular?

With this specific mod package, I was hoping to finally find out why that was!

Engaging to Fly

As a piece of precise engineering, not least by the developers, I was more than a little taken aback at how much there was to consider and take into account when flying around in this aircraft. Whilst this aircraft is one of the largest ever flown it still comes with relatively easy to control features and a real understanding of the model of plane that it is.

Whilst flying other Airbus mods in the past has made a big difference to my overall enjoyment of the system, few helped me understand the logistics of an aircraft as this did. With this product I was flying an aircraft that was using legitimate flight dynamics to really capture the original aircraft and make it feel as close to reality as it possibly could.

The brilliant model and the various liveries were helping me really settle into the atmosphere and style of the whole thing, whilst the variety of features helped it look wonderful. I would happily recommend this in the future for anyone who wants to get an engaging flight that looks wonderful and performs just as well. From the awesome animations that all work in tandem and with realistic styling this does everything that you could possibly imagine – and more – to bring the whole picture together.

The 1024 x 1024 textures make the aircraft even more engaging to look at, but when combined with the authenticity of how it flies? There are very few worthy competitors.

“The Superjumbo”

I was massively reeled in by the fact it was a “super jumbo” jet and thus it soon become a bit of a fantasy to get on-board on and try it out. After all, it must be HUGE! I finally got to do that but I was so impressed with the feature that I was determined to fly one properly.

I’ll likely never get the chance but in truth you’ll absolutely love taking part with this aircraft just as much as I did. It’s about as close to the real thing as I am likely to get, after all!
