Concerns of a Looming Crisis in European Defence Industry

Posted on Fri, 07 Sep 2012 23:00:00 GMT

A new industry report has been issued, warning of an imminent crisis in the European defence industry.

Eurofighter Typhoon Aircraft.

According to the report, Europe’s ability to develop advanced, next generation aircraft has been severely eroded and collective funding decisions are necessary to revive the industry.

The study was commissioned by the Future Air Systems for Europe (FAS4Europe) and the European Defence Agency (EDA). The report observes,

The situation for future air systems is severe, with some important industrial capabilities and technologies already at risk.

According to the report, a joint strategy and additional investment is necessary to develop next generation combat aircraft and attack helicopters. The report says although the Europe's military aeronautics industry is still competitive, this position is based on past investments, and new investments need to be made to secure the industry’s future. Creating advanced military aviation takes time and money, hence a coordinated plan and long-term strategy are necessary.

This report also highlights that Russia, China and the USA, as well as the emerging industrial and defence powers South Korea, India, Brazil, and Turkey are investing in their defence industries, and Europe needs to do the same.

The report recommends a strategy that can be carried out between 2012 and 2017, during which various project will be implemented to advance the European defence industry.

In addition to the two organizations that commissioned this study, several companies are involved in this initiative, namely EADS, BAE Systems, Hellenic Aerospace Industry, Dassault, Thales and Saab.
