X-Plane is Laminar Research's flight simulator, in continuous development since 1995. Where Microsoft's sims use lookup tables for aircraft flight characteristics, X-Plane uses blade element theory — it calculates aerodynamic forces in real time across each surface of the aircraft. The result is a sim that's less forgiving but, in many cases, more honest about how aircraft actually behave.
X-Plane has both a vibrant freeware community and a strong commercial market. The mods in this section span X-Plane 11 and X-Plane 12, with most files clearly labeled for compatibility. X-Plane 12 (the current major version) is the primary target for new freeware releases, but X-Plane 11 is still widely used and supported.

X-Plane occupies a particular niche in the flight simulation world. It's the sim that engineers and physics nerds gravitate to. The sim that flight instructors use. The sim that gets cited in academic aeronautics papers. Where MSFS markets to "anyone can fly", X-Plane assumes you want to actually understand what you're doing.
The freeware ecosystem reflects that. X-Plane plugins tend to be technically ambitious — complete weather engines, custom autopilot logic, detailed aircraft systems modeling. The aircraft tend to skew toward general aviation and study-level airliners rather than fantasy scenarios. The scenery work is geographically meticulous: HD mesh packs, accurate airport reconstructions, photoscenery that respects what's actually on the ground.
Laminar Research's commitment to backward compatibility helps. X-Plane 12 still runs most X-Plane 11 add-ons. Many planes built for X-Plane 9 or 10 still work, with minor adjustments. That continuity matters for a sim where users invest serious time tuning their setup.
