Editorial
As a huge fan of aircraft that don’t wipe out cities, I wasn’t really too interested in trying out this mod. However, positive reviews and a huge amount of detail being released about the various jobs and tasks it can fulfill within FS2004 made me fire up my old simulation partner and give this a go.
What I found was a deeply comprehensive and accurate remake of a difficult to fly aircraft, giving me a total appreciation for how much trouble the boys behind the real cockpits must be in when they are flying, with so much to learn!
Immensely Detailed
The cockpit is too busy for me, but that’s a positive for the designers; they got it spot on. After more than enough time spent doing ridiculous dives into every bit of terrain you could possibly see, I started to get a hang for this model and learn its challenging range of buttons, features and extras that make flight management a bit of a nightmare at times.
What you will find is that the aircraft, when you are up in the skies, handles just as it should. I was massively impressed that after my initial learning problems (brought on by my relative lack of experience with war planes) I started to get the hang of it.
This thing turns like a dream and you can see why it is viewed as a brilliant racing aircraft as much as anything else. It can burst through the air and easily get you to where you want to be with its blinding speed, also helping you manage your flight with plenty of detail and feedback from the cockpit.
Variety in Reality
Another major factor was the inclusion of the stunningly designed animations on the control surfaces, including things like the pilot moving and the afterburners exploding into effect. Bring all of this together and you are quite quickly left with an awesome model that looks excellent and really carries the air of authority that you might hope for.
It’s a brilliant project, and one that you can easily enjoy being a part of since it’s so close to the real thing. It does a fine job of capturing the little things such as the opening canopy and the rolling wheels, all bringing together those little things that helps you feel as if you are flying an aircraft instead of a representation of an aircraft.
The Verdict
A major improvement for me, though, came from the extra detail included within all of the liveries. Whether you want to fly for the USAF or NASA, you can do so with ease – the quality is superb, too. The high-definition textures and precision in detail help bring the whole thing together for a flashy and truly enjoyable experience which pushes the boundaries.
