This freeware repaint depicts RAF Twin Pioneer XT610, originally constructed under manufacturer serial number 561. It first took to the skies in September 1959 and served several civilian operators before joining the RAF. The repaint is designed for Rob Richardson’s freeware Scottish Aviation Twin Pioneer model made for Microsoft Flight Simulator X Acceleration. Created by Peter Watkins, this texture set accurately captures the XT610 livery as it appeared at the Empire Test Pilots School.

RAF Twin Pioneer XT610 Repaint Details

The Scottish Aviation Twin Pioneer, sometimes referred to as the “Twin Pin,” is powered by two Alvis Leonides 531 radial engines. It features a high-wing monoplane design with a distinctive triple fin assembly and a fixed tailwheel configuration. The specific aircraft depicted here, c/n 561, first flew as G-APRS and began its operational life under lease to Fisons for aerial survey duties. Later, it flew for Deutsche Taxiflug in Germany and also spent a year in service with Sierra Leone Airlines. Upon returning to the United Kingdom in early 1962, it was adopted by the RAF as XT610 at Boscombe Down’s Empire Test Pilots School.

Key Technical Characteristics

  • Short Takeoff and Landing (STOL) Capability: Thanks to its robust radial engines and high-lift design, the Twin Pioneer excels in operating from unprepared runways or shorter strips.
  • Triple Rudder Configuration: The aircraft’s triple fin and rudder enhance directional control, particularly in crosswind situations.
  • Proven Service History: G-APRS undertook survey, air taxi, and regional airline work prior to its RAF career, illustrating its versatility.
  • RAF Adaptation: When designated XT610, it served test and evaluation roles at the Empire Test Pilots School, reflecting its importance for specialized operations.

description=Powered by two Alvis Leonides 531 radial engines, the Twin Pioneer was a high-wing cabin monoplane with a triple fin and rudder assembly and fixed tailwheel undercarriage. The prototype Twin Pioneer, registered G-ANTP, first flew at Prestwick Airport on 25 June 1955. Flight trials proved that the aircraft had a very short landing run and the aircraft was displayed at the September 1955 Society of British Aircraft Constructors Show at Farnborough.
Three pre-production aircraft were built for trials, and sales and demonstrations.
In 1958, the 33rd aircraft was used as a prototype for the Series 2 with Pratt & Whitney Wasp R-1340 radial engines which had been ordered by Philippine Air Lines. A Series 3 aircraft was also developed to use the improved Alvis Leonides 531 radial engine.

Base Model Requirements

This repaint is exclusively for the freeware Scottish Aviation Twin Pioneer by Rob Richardson. You must first obtain the base model, which can be found in the Fly Away Simulation file library. The repaint was meticulously crafted by Peter Watkins and will not function without the necessary original files.
