This freeware repaint enhances the classic Douglas DC-3 with a polished aluminum finish and carefully refined details, portraying Delta Airlines’ historic livery for Microsoft Flight Simulator 2004. It includes a set of photorealistic textures, multiple interior passenger perspectives, and an updated Aircraft.cfg optimized for smooth flying—particularly on ILS approaches. Created by Donald L. Derwin, this package requires the default DC-3 base model, which is available in the Fly Away Simulation library. A separate companion file (DC3DDLZC.ZIP) is also necessary.
Refined Exterior Surfaces
The repaint showcases a glossy metal finish that highlights the iconic fuselage lines of the Douglas DC-3. The aluminum surfaces feature realistic reflections, capturing that signature shine these vintage aircraft displayed in real life. Delta Airlines once relied on the DC-3 to redefine short-haul service, and this texture set pays homage to that historic period in commercial aviation.
Polished Aluminum and Authentic Markings
Each fuselage panel is carefully mapped to reproduce the subtle unevenness of the metalwork, while the airline emblems retain period-accurate positioning. Various minute details, such as surface rivets and engine cowling contours, enhance immersion for those who spend substantial time admiring external views.
Interior Perspective Enhancements
In-cabin viewpoints have been reconfigured to highlight seating arrangements and the overall feel of the DC-3’s cabin environment. One can observe the cabin from the rear, looking forward, and from the forward section, gazing aft, to authentically emulate passenger perspectives. For added realism, vantage points align with real-world DC-3 cabin dimensions and window layouts.
Tailored Views for Flight Patterns
These new vantage points streamline pattern work and final approaches, supporting more precise landings. Additionally, an aluminum wing view is integrated for external checks, which many virtual aviators find useful for monitoring flight surfaces.
Modified Aircraft.cfg for Improved Handling
A custom Aircraft.cfg file is included to enhance elevator and rudder authority, making takeoffs and landings more predictable. In particular, the ILS glideslope interception and tracking have been fine-tuned, which helps in maintaining alignment during key transitional phases of flight. Pilots who practice instrument approaches will appreciate the steadier descent rates and smoother transitions.
ILS Approach Procedure Video
A specialized flight video demonstrates the recommended technique for intercepting the localizer and glideslope. It guides pilots through throttle control, flap deployment, and pitch management. This supplemental resource clarifies the unique flight qualities of the DC-3 when fully laden.

Essential Installation Notes
- Requires the default Douglas DC-3 base model for Microsoft Flight Simulator 2004 (available in the Fly Away Simulation library).
- Additional file (DC3DDLZC.ZIP) must be installed to complete the repaint setup.
- Ensure the custom Aircraft.cfg is backed up and then merged correctly to retain unique flight dynamics.
- Created by Donald L. Derwin as a free add-on—original compressed files remain intact from the developer.
