This single-seat Corben Baby Ace Tundra freeware package offers an authentic representation of a pioneering homebuilt aircraft, originally popularized in the late 1920s. Designed by Orland Corben for the Ace Aircraft Manufacturing Company, this model reflects the spirit of the Baby Ace plans that continue to be sold today for amateur construction. It is fully compatible with Microsoft Flight Simulator X and Microsoft Flight Simulator 2004, enabling simulation pilots to experience the classic appeal of an early kit plane on rugged Tundra-style landing gear.

Historical Context and Taildragger Character

The Corben Baby Ace gained wide recognition for being among the earliest plans-marketed homebuilt designs (plans refer to complete instructional blueprints). Builders embraced its simple fuselage and easily sourced materials, establishing a new era of accessible aviation. This Tundra variant retains the fundamental classic taildragger traits while featuring oversized tires engineered for short field operations. The real-world counterpart, often seen in remote regions, demonstrates exceptional flexibility on unprepared surfaces.

Unique Elements and Key Contributors

Craig Richardson, the creator of this free release, meticulously developed the exterior design to capture the aircraft’s open-cockpit aesthetic and robust airframe. For period-correct cockpit functionality, Robert Kerr’s gauge set from “Pete” has been integrated, enhancing realism without compromising performance. Real-world information from Brian Harrington, pilot of “Bits & Pieces,” provided valuable reference data on flight handling and aerodynamic nuances. Additional assistance was generously offered by beta testers Damian Radice, Brian Farrington, Leyland Spurr, and Roger Law, all of whom contributed insights to refine the flight model.

Tundra Performance Characteristics

This version offers enhanced ground-handling on rugged surfaces. The enlarged tires, sometimes referred to as “tundra tires,” aid in navigating uneven terrain and enable smooth short takeoff rolls. The Baby Ace’s straightforward controls and vintage layout are preserved, so enthusiasts of historic aviation can focus on subtle taildragger skills, particularly during taxi and final approach phases. The overall flight behavior remains faithful to lightly powered, homebuilt craft of the era, which were known for responsive controls and gentle stall traits.

Installation Procedure

  • Extract all files to a temporary folder of your choice.
  • Move the resulting aircraft folder into your primary Aircraft or SimObjects directory.
  • Restart the flight simulator so the add-on appears correctly in your aircraft selection menu.

Once installed, you will be able to select the Corben Baby Ace Tundra and explore a vintage aviation experience that demonstrates the ingenuity of homebuilt designers. Special credit goes to Craig Richardson for bringing this classic design to virtual life, and to Robert Kerr for extending the use of his gauges. Enthusiasts continue to adopt and build the Baby Ace in real-world hangars, ensuring this iconic taildragger remains a shining example of practical engineering. Enjoy your flights!
