Microsoft FSX has a wide range of scenery you can download to add variety to your flights. It’s easy to install. This tutorial will give you the basic steps.

The Pensacola Naval Air Station is home to the world famous Blue Angels. The Pensacola NAS Addon Scenery pack will be used in these instructions. You can download it here:

We will go through two different approaches. Here is the first one:

Approach One: Scenery Library

First Step

From the above link, download the zipped file. Almost all downloads for FSX will be in either a .zip or .rar file. Use the native Windows extraction tool or enlist the services of a third-party utility like 7-zip, WinZip or WinRar.

It’s best to download to a separate area and then copy the files you need to FSX. If you run into .exe or .msi files, it’s just a matter of double-clicking the file and letting it install itself. Make sure you scan any download with your anti-virus program before launching.

Second Step

The folder you download is called KNPA_FSX1.2. However, the file you want is inside and is called KNPA_FSX. That is the folder you want to copy to the addon scenery folder of FSX.

The file location is:

C:\Program Files\Microsoft Games\Microsoft Flight Simulator X\Addon Scenery

(Remember that a 64 bit system’s program folder is called “Program Files (x86).”)

Third Step

Fire up FSX and navigate to the scenery library. From the main menu it will look like:

Settings Button  > Scenery Library button

One cool feature in FSX is you can add scenery mid-flight. It would look like this:

In-Flight scenery menu.

Fourth Step

While in Scenery Library, select  Add area button. From there, click on the addon scenery folder. Select the folder that has the scenery and texture folders inside and click OK.

(Go over to the KNPA_FSX folder and click OK.)

Select scenery directory.

Select scenery directory.

Fifth Step

Click OK to activate the scenery. If you choose to make the change mid-flight, your computer will reload the scenery file and you should see the changes out the cockpit window!

(Click OK.)

This method is convenient because you can activate scenery on the fly. There is one other method you may want to consider.

Approach Two: Direct Copy

First Step

In this method, you copy the files directly to their destination. First, download the original files as previously discussed.

Second Step

Copy the scenery folder DIRECTLY into the addon scenery folder in FSX. Here is the location:

C:\Program Files\Microsoft Games\Microsoft Flight Simulator X\Addon Scenery\scenery

Then copy the texture folder from your download to the texture folder in FSX. Here is the location:

C:\Program Files\Microsoft Games\Microsoft Flight Simulator X\Addon Scenery\texture

Third Step

When you fire up FSX, it will automatically find the new scenery and activate it. If you are already running, navigate to the scenery library and click OK. The program will present the new scenery.

Have fun!
