This freeware release showcases a detailed tri-engine MD-11 from iFDG (international Flightsim Design Group). It brings together reflective textures, numerous animations, and an authentic flight model designed with input from an actual MD-11 pilot. It also comes with opening passenger and cargo doors, refined lighting effects, and flexing wings—fully packaged for FS2004 enthusiasts.

Visual and Structural Highlights

  • Dynamic Control Surfaces: Includes fully articulated flaps, flaperons, and thrust reversers.
  • Illumination Setup: Offers retractable lighting features for runway operations, navigation, and more.
  • Reflective Exterior: Integrates high-resolution graphics that enhance the fuselage and wing surfaces.
  • Opening Doors: Provides animated passenger exits and main-deck cargo hatches for combi or freight operations.
  • Wing Flex Simulation: Shows realistic deformation under aerodynamic load, providing an immersive visual effect.

Insights into This Tri-Jet

The MD-11 remains a distinctive wide-fuselage aircraft, recognized for its trio of high-bypass turbofan engines and its modernized flight deck. Originally produced at the Douglas Products Division of Boeing Commercial Airplanes in Long Beach, California, it continued the lineage of the earlier DC-10, adding increased seating capacity and an improved range profile. Operators often praised its efficient cargo accommodations below the passenger deck.

Distinct aerodynamic refinements—such as the application of winglets, a reshaped trailing edge, and a more compact horizontal stabilizer with integrated fuel tanks—help preserve fuel efficiency and improve operational reach. In extended-range variants, an auxiliary fuel tank and higher takeoff weight capability enable flights covering over 8,000 statute miles (approximately 13,000 km), depending on payload and engine configuration.

Flight Deck Technology

iFDG’s model recreates the MD-11’s advanced cockpit systems, including multiple cathode ray tube displays and a dual flight management structure that streamlines navigation. These integrations minimize crew workload and eliminate the need for a flight engineer. Wind-shear detection combined with comprehensive automatic flight controls further augment safety and pilot situational awareness.

Engine Options and Compatibility

The real MD-11 typically offers three primary powerplant choices: General Electric’s CF6-80C2 and Pratt & Whitney’s 4460 or 4462. Each engine version targets efficiency within its thrust range, allowing airlines to standardize within their preferred manufacturer. This addon provides flight dynamics that closely simulate these performance aspects, courtesy of cooperation with an actual pilot who has flown the type.
