The developers at FFX/SGA have crafted a freeware package featuring the McDonnell Douglas MD-88 in Austral Líneas Aéreas’ older color scheme. Enthusiasts who fly in FS2004 will appreciate the meticulous exterior geometry and the fidelity of the livery created by Matias Bagnato. Modelers used Gmax to ensure that everything—from the fuselage shape to the tail configuration—mirrors the real MD-88’s design. This rendition captures Austral’s heritage, offering an immersive experience for virtual pilots interested in one of Argentina’s notable domestic carriers.

Refined Exterior Construction

The MD-88 is part of the MD-80 series, which evolved from the DC-9 lineage. This add-on reflects that evolution by incorporating both flat and coned tail configurations (the MD-88 variants often differ in tail cone design [tail cone: the rear aerodynamic fairing]) to match real-world specifications. The airframe geometry, including the distinct T-tail layout, has been reproduced with exacting standards to ensure visual accuracy in every livetrack camera angle.

Advanced Lighting and Doors

Simmers will notice authentic lighting elements that line up with the real aircraft’s layout. Pilots can deploy working airstairs for convenient passenger boarding, just as crews would on ramps without jet bridges. In addition, the model integrates carefully placed retractable landing lights and fully operational entry points, including passenger and cargo doors. These doors move fluidly thanks to high-definition animations that enhance realism.

Technical Flight Deck Touches

Although the focus here is primarily on the external model, details such as accurately shaped wings, flaps, and control surfaces contribute to a more authentic handling profile in FS2004. The MD-88, powered by two Pratt & Whitney JT8D-219 engines, is known for short to medium-haul flights, and many of those characteristics are retained in this freeware release.
