This freeware release for Microsoft Flight Simulator 2004 presents a meticulously crafted Douglas DC-10-30F in a Varig Log Cargo scheme. Created using the SGA base model and painted by the talented Wes Archibald, this package captures the essence of one of the most recognizable tri-jet airframes in cargo service.
Closer Examination of the Cargo-Focused DC-10
The DC-10 series has a distinctive tri-engine configuration that offers balanced performance and range capability, especially in its Series 30 variant. In contrast to earlier DC-10 builds, this version features an expanded wingspan for additional fuel capacity, and it incorporates a center main landing gear assembly. These modifications significantly enhance payload potential while preserving robust operational versatility for long-haul cargo flights. Varig Log, a significant cargo operator in Brazil, leveraged this airframe type to transport substantial freight loads worldwide.
Key Flight Dynamics and Features
- Refined Aerodynamics: The wing structure is optimized to ensure stable flight behavior at various altitudes and speeds, even with challenging cargo loads.
- Additional Landing Gear: A center main gear helps distribute higher takeoff weights, enabling lengthy transcontinental routes.
- Cargo-Ready Interior: The freight configuration replaces the usual passenger cabin elements, showcasing wide cargo doors and reinforced flooring.
- Authentic Model and Livery: SGA’s model captures the overall proportions of the DC-10-30F, and the Varig Log repaint by Wes Archibald reflects the actual paintwork seen on the real-world fleet.

description=Varig Log repaint by Capt. Wes Archibald. The Series 30 offered considerably improved payload and range capability with increased fuel capacity and thrust, which necessitated an increase of 10 feet in wingspan and the addition of a center main landing gear assembly. Most popular of all the variants, a total of 206 Series 30s were built, including 27 -30CFs, 4 extended range -30ERs, and 12 pure freighter -30Fs. Unlike the Series 10, most -30s were ordered without the optional lower deck galley to allowed increased cargo capacity. First revenue flight for a Series 30ER was on December 15, 1972 with Swissair. The Series 30CF (Convertible Freighter) was first certified in March 1973 and placed into revenue service in April 1973.
