The national carrier of Finland is well-known for its distinctive branding, and this freeware repaint captures that design on the McDonnell Douglas DC-9-41 model for Microsoft Flight Simulator 2004. Featuring textures authored by Frank Idone, this release is intended for use with the SGA DC-9 series base package. It reflects the authentic appearance of Finnair’s real-world DC-9 fleet, particularly suited for short- to medium-range operations. The base model is not included, so be sure to download it separately from the Fly Away Simulation mod library.

Finnair’s Heritage on the DC-9

Finnair has operated numerous Douglas and McDonnell Douglas airliners, contributing to its longstanding reliability and efficiency on regional routes. The DC-9, specifically designed for use on shorter runways, aligns with Finnair’s network of domestic and continental European destinations. The “Series 40” variant seen here measures approximately 125.6 feet (around 38.3 meters) in fuselage length and can accommodate up to 125 passengers. Engine power typically comes from JT8D variants like the JT8D-9, JT8D-11, or JT8D-15. These powerplants provide the necessary thrust for takeoffs on more constrained airfields. In Finnair’s case, the aircraft’s compact dimensions and robust construction proved beneficial for Scandinavian weather and runway conditions.

Key Personalization Details

  • Paint Scheme: Reflects Finnair’s signature blue-and-white motif, complete with official tail markings.
  • Aircraft Model Compatibility: Designed exclusively for SGA’s Douglas DC-9-41 package (freeware base required).
  • Developer: Textures by Frank Idone.
  • Simulator Platform: Designed for Microsoft Flight Simulator 2004 (FS2004).

Installation Process and Configuration

After acquiring the base DC-9 model by SGA, extract these Finnair-specific texture files into the aircraft’s main folder. Then modify the aircraft configuration file to reference the new Finnair textures. Below is a sample entry for your aircraft.cfg to include under the [fltsim] sections:

description=DC-9 no.720 flown by Finnair.\nLivery by Frank Idone.\n\nThe DC-9 was designed specifically to operate from short runways and on short- to medium-range routes so that the speed, comfort and reliability of jet transportation could be extended to hundreds of communities previously served only by propeller-driven airliners.\nSeries 40: To again meet airline demands for a DC-9 with more capacity, the Series 40 was developed with a fuselage length of 125.6 feet (38.3 m). Seating is available for up to 125 passengers, 10 more than the popular Series 30s. Below-floor cargo space totals 1,019 cubic feet (28.8 m3). The Series 40 uses the same wing as the Series 30. Series 40 engines are JT8D-9s, JT8D-11s or JT8D-15s. The model entered service in March 1968.

Important Note

This package provides only the repaint files. To ensure proper functionality, remember to download the original SGA DC-9 series model, which can be found in the Fly Away Simulation library. Install these textures accurately so the simulator recognizes Finnair as a valid livery choice for your DC-9 flights.
