Flight Simulator X Prepar3D

This detailed freeware release of the Royal Navy BAE Harrier FRS1 for Microsoft Flight Simulator X showcases an iconic Sea Harrier configured for carrier-based operations. Developed by Matthew Ivey and UKMIL, it provides multiple configurations, an essential vertical takeoff and landing (VTOL) capability, and faithful modeling of this naval jump jet. This package aims to offer an immersive experience for those eager to explore maritime strike missions, distinctive short takeoff gear, and realistic avionics. It includes a ready-to-fly installation, plus helpful documentation for easy setup and operation.

Distinctive Loadouts and Textures

This FRS1 edition is delivered with nine selectable weapon configurations, each designed to reflect different operational roles, from air-to-air interception to ground-attack support. Additionally, five separate paint schemes are included, each crafted to represent unique Royal Navy deployments and squadron markings. Every variation highlights authentic detailing, from fuselage insignias to underwing stores, for heightened visual realism during missions.

Flight Deck Configuration and Cockpit Views

To replicate actual Royal Navy operations, the aircraft is furnished with a 2D panel, supplemented by a functional yet straightforward virtual cockpit. Within the 2D layout, Pilots can monitor crucial readouts for turbine thrust settings and fuel reserves, reflecting genuine shipboard routines. The integrated head-up display (HUD) and radar systems—credited to EIRC MARCIANO—give an added layer of situational awareness, ideal for both carrier approaches and combat engagements. The panel bitmap created by Phil Perrott further complements the cockpit ambiance.

Integrated Systems and Requirements

This add-on leverages FSUIPC (either unregistered or registered) for essential gauge functionality and interactive features. On the initial loading of the Harrier, gauge permission prompts will appear. Simply confirm by selecting “Run” and then accept adding the required entries into the configuration files. Subsequent flights will then run smoothly without triggering additional prompts.

Navigational and Operating Guidance

A comprehensive PDF file is included to assist with procedures, from fuel management to vertical landing approaches. Operators are encouraged to refer to it for detailed instructions on setting nozzle angles, power outputs, and approach speeds. These nuances are critical for replicating the short or vertical landings that are the trademark of the real Sea Harrier.

Fast Installation with Self-Installer

An automated installer sets up the entire aircraft quickly. Note that no uninstaller is provided, so be sure to confirm the target directory before completing the process. The package is relatively light, yet contains complete flight models and essential assets to run smoothly within FSX. In the event of manual adjustments, simply review the documentation for guidance on folder structure and gauge file placement.

Additional Notes on the Harrier Legacy

The Sea Harrier FRS1, sometimes referred to as the “Shar,” served as a cornerstone of the Royal Navy’s fleet air defense. Its ability to launch from shorter decks with vectored thrust made it a formidable choice for maritime strike forces. This simulation honors the original aircraft’s pioneering design and integrates key dynamic elements, ensuring vertical landing trials and takeoff capabilities feel authentic.

Credits to the Creators

Special appreciation goes to Matthew Ivey and UKMIL for producing this entire freeware model. Their rendition brings a blend of tactical realism and user-friendly operation, bringing the Royal Navy BAE Harrier FRS1 into vivid life within Microsoft Flight Simulator X.
