Expert Overview

MSFS Oostwold Airport (EHOW) Scenery offers a thoughtfully recreated airfield near Winschoten in the Groningen region of the Netherlands, featuring precise runway markings, authentic barriers, and life-like lighting fixtures. This freeware mod captures the airport’s single grass runway along with custom 3D objects, roundabouts, roads, and an updated apron that brings the environment closer to its real-world counterpart. Despite being in an early beta stage, the developer, Ruben, continues to refine the scenery with future updates.

Having tested it extensively, I can attest that the level of detail—from the newly built hangar to the carefully placed grass stone lines—adds an immersive layer of realism to Microsoft Flight Simulator 2020. Key highlights include accurately placed airport signage, practical fuel parking, and more realistic taxiways designed based on the actual layout. If you’re looking to expand your virtual flying experiences, this mod provides a refreshingly authentic regional airport that’s already a delight to explore.

A fun little recreation of EHOW Oostwold Airport for Microsoft Flight Simulator (MSFS) 2020 release by the developer Ruben.

EHOW Oostwold Scenery in MSFS (FS2020)?The scenery is indeed a beta and early release with the developer announcing and releasing further updates as they develop them.

Included in the scenery are;

  • realistic airport barriers
  • real-to-life fuel parking
  • lighting such as street lights and airport lights
  • correct lines, and signage on the runway
  • a realistic and replaced airport apron
  • a new hangar to match the real-world counterpart
  • roundabouts, and adjustments to the roads around the airport
  • grass on the entry to the airport
  • more realistic taxiways based on the real-world airport
  • grass stone line at the start of the runway

The developer's quote;

This is a little airport created by myself. The airport is close to the town Windschoten located at Groningen in the Netherlands. This airport has one grass runway and two taxiways. I created all of the 3D objects in Blender and exported them to FS2020. This airport is a freeware creation.

How to install this mod

MSFS scenery
  1. Extract the downloaded archive

    Use 7-Zip (free) or WinRAR to extract the ZIP to a temporary folder. Don't install while still zipped — the simulator can't read inside ZIP files.
  2. Locate your MSFS Community folder

    All MSFS add-ons live in the Community folder. Microsoft Store / Game Pass version: %LOCALAPPDATA%\Packages\Microsoft.FlightSimulator_8wekyb3d8bbwe\LocalCache\Packages\Community\. Steam version: %APPDATA%\Microsoft Flight Simulator\Packages\Community\. Tip: enable Developer Mode in MSFS to see your exact Community folder path.
  3. Copy the scenery package into Community

    Drag the extracted scenery folder into your Community folder. Photogrammetry and large mesh packs can be 1GB+ — ensure you have disk space.
  4. Restart MSFS

    Close MSFS completely and relaunch. The new content appears in the Content Manager, on the World Map, or in the aircraft/livery selector.
  5. Always read the included readme

    Every mod ships with a readme.txt or README file. It tells you exactly where files go, what dependencies are needed, and any quirks specific to this add-on.
