Editorial

When I first downloaded this package, it was with the intention of trying out the Howard 500. I’d never had a chance to do so until now and its iconic design and intricate features made it an instant favorite for me to look into and try to get working on my FS2004 installation.

The fact it was made with GMAX made me comfortable it would be of a high standard – but I have to say, the standard blew me away. Upon loading it up I was hugely impressed by the features and the designs within the aircraft. It’s got everything you would really need to enjoy flying around in this leisurely aircraft, as well as a whole raft of little details included to make sure the whole model look the very best that it can.

The model is also fully animated so the whole thing can come to life a bit more, with various little effects going on inside and outside the aircraft at all times making it nice and easy for the whole thing to come together and really look the part.

It comes with some awesome features that match up with the real thing, with things like the radial propelled taildragger AC and the “Hand-flyer” flight dynamics. Naturally, this makes a big difference to the way that the aircraft comes across both in the way that it looks and in the way that it tends to perform. All of these little extra features add up to make a wholly enjoyable experience.

When you include the fact that it comes with customized panels that look excellent, it becomes much easier to manage the aircraft and fly around in total comfort. The virtual cockpit makes management of just about everything a piece of cake as you fly around, making it nice and easy for you to see gauges and buttons effectively.

The backlighting within the cockpit means that you can fly around at night and not have too many issues with visibility which is always nice. The specific paint scheme included on the panels also makes them easy to spot, ensuring that you don’t need to struggle at all with spotting the gauges as you fly around.

The best thing about this, though, is the awesome leather interior – it makes the cockpit much more comfortable to sit in and it means that the whole thing blends in much better together. Instead of an off-putting contrast in the cockpit as you get with some aircraft out there, you get a fresh and clear looking model that is easy to fly around in and very simple to enjoy the sights and sounds from when inside the cockpit.

Add in the excellent sounds that are made up to ensure that it sounds just like the real engine, HTML checklists for simple looking at what you need to do when flying and even specular highlights you really do get all of the features that you need to see just how interesting an aircraft the Howard 500 is to fly!

Spinning prop texture is opaque. However, I fixed that by using texture from another plane. Not sure the vc needs a GPS but other than that, lovely plane.

I can see why this has over 6000 downloads, awesome plane. This is a "must have" it's simple to install, good to fly, and the detail is really nice. I'm surprised it's not payware.
