Norfolk International Airport X2 V

Norfolk International Airport (KORF) receives a detailed freeware airport refresh for Microsoft Flight Simulator X, improving day-to-day operations with optional crosswind runway behavior, expanded parking to better match real-world ramp use, and rebuilt ground-vehicle routes. A corrected rooftop tower viewpoint and AI-friendly taxi flow support smoother arrivals, departures, and traffic handling.

This enhanced freeware package by Ray Smith introduces a refined rendition of Norfolk International Airport (ICAO: KORF) within Microsoft Flight Simulator X. Located in southeastern Virginia, near the Chesapeake Bay, this airport offers widespread regional connections and now operates more accurately within the simulator environment. The download provides two BGL configurations, each featuring specialized modifications such as crosswind runway usage, expanded parking assignments, and optimized vehicle routing.

Key Features and Technical Adjustments

  • Two Installation Variants: Choose between a standard airport file or a version that activates crosswind runway functionality. The crosswind edition makes both runways available for departures and arrivals.
  • Additional Parking Areas: Each BGL update provides extra parking positions that align with realistic terminal and ramp layouts.
  • Reconfigured Vehicle Paths: Ground support vehicle flows have been rebuilt around the entire airport to minimize traffic conflicts.
  • Authentic Control Tower Viewpoint: Tower view is positioned on the rooftop of the control tower for an immersive vantage across the airfield.
  • Optimized for AI Traffic: Fully tested alongside popular AI traffic packages, including Ultimate Traffic and WOAI (not required to run this add-on).

Guidance on Crosswind Runways

The crosswind runway variant leverages an innovative technique credited to Jim Vile, enabling simultaneous use of parallel and crosswind operational surfaces. However, the ATIS broadcast may reference fictitious runways, which users should ignore. If you prefer not to hear these additional runway designations, install the non-crosswind file.

Installation Instructions

  1. Select either KORF_ADE_CW_RS.BGL (includes the crosswind runway capability) or KORF_ADE_RS.BGL (standard layout).
  2. Place your chosen BGL file into the “Addon Scenery/scenery” folder under your main Microsoft Flight Simulator X directory.
  3. Run Microsoft Flight Simulator X to see the updated airport layout in action.
  • Important: Only keep one “KORF.bgl” file in your Addon Scenery/scenery folder at any time to prevent incorrect parking assignments.

Removal Steps

  1. Remove the BGL file from the “Addon Scenery/scenery” folder.
  2. The default Norfolk International Airport scenery will then be restored.

Credits

Ray Smith created and developed this improved airport layout. Thanks to Jon Masterson for his ADE Utility and to Jim Vile for the crosswind runway activation technique. These collaborators have ensured a seamless experience for virtual pilots who frequent southeastern Virginia’s busy passenger and cargo gateway.

Additional Tip for Tower Viewing

If you want to pan around in Tower View without moving the user aircraft, assign a convenient key or controller button to the “View track/pan Toggle” setting. This lets you survey the fields and taxiways at Norfolk from every angle, and toggling back returns you to the standard aircraft-centered view.

Enjoy the flight simulator experience with this carefully crafted freeware airport rendition, and have a great journey in and out of Norfolk International.

How to install this mod

FSX / P3D scenery
  1. Extract the downloaded archive

Use 7-Zip (free) or WinRAR to extract the ZIP to a temporary folder. Don't install while still zipped — the simulator can't read inside ZIP files.
  2. Place scenery in Addon Scenery

Create a folder under FSX\Addon Scenery\ containing scenery and texture sub-folders.
  3. Activate in Scenery Library

In FSX, go to Settings → Scenery Library → Add Area. Higher priority means it overrides lower entries for the same location.
  4. Always read the included readme

Every mod ships with a readme.txt or README file. It tells you exactly where files go, what dependencies are needed, and any quirks specific to this add-on.
