This freeware release showcases a fully featured McDonnell-Douglas MD-11 in the colors of Varig (registration PP-VOP) for FS2004. It incorporates a detailed external model and a complete base set, packaged specifically so simmers can fly this wide-body trijet immediately without any extra downloads.

Distinctive Flight Model and Visual Elements

The development team at iFDG (international Flightsim Design Group) has implemented several technical enhancements in this package. Notably, the MD-11’s animated control surfaces support flaps, flaperons, and contemporary wing views. The included reflective skin also exhibits fine details that capture characteristic Varig markings, with livery work completed by Clemens Pieper.

Varig’s Integration of the MD-11

Varig, formerly Brazil’s flagship international airline, deployed the MD-11 extensively on long-haul routes. With its wide-cabin layout, the MD-11 became a practical solution for covering intercontinental flights thanks to strong reliability, favorable cargo capacity, and passenger comfort that served Varig’s global operations for many years.

Technical Attributes and Flight Deck Innovations

The MD-11 architecture integrates aerodynamic modifications such as refined wing trailing edges, winglets, and a resized horizontal stabilizer with onboard fuel capacity. These design refinements enhance aerodynamic efficiency while expanding the aircraft’s overall range potential. Furthermore, the advanced cockpit incorporates six CRT displays, augmented with wind-shear detection, dual flight management systems, and a digital autopilot designed to reduce pilot workload.

Operating Ranges and Cabin Utility

With a maximum takeoff weight of up to 602,500 pounds (273,290 kg) in a standard MD-11, nonstop distances of around 7,630 statute miles (12,270 km) may be reached. When fitted with an auxiliary tank and boosted to a 630,500-pound (285,990 kg) takeoff capacity, the MD-11 can fly approximately 8,225 statute miles (13,230 km). This extended range configuration appeals to carriers that demand transoceanic versatility, while offering various cabin layouts from 285 seats in a three-class design to around 410 seats in all-economy setups.

Engine Configurations

Three powerplant choices were available for the MD-11: the General Electric CF6-80C2, Pratt & Whitney 4460, or Pratt & Whitney 4462. Each engine family delivers a competitive balance of fuel economy and thrust output, suited to medium- or long-range operations while ensuring reliable takeoff performance.

Installation for FS2004

To set up this package, extract all contents directly into your primary FS2004 aircraft folder. Inside, there are specific files meant for the simulator’s Effects folder. Move these into the main Effects directory. Activate them in-flight using the “I” key.
