This add-on for Microsoft Flight Simulator X applies a well-traveled, aged appearance to the A2A Simulations B-17 Flying Fortress cockpit, introducing notable signs of wear across switches, panel edges, and instruments. Developed by Paul Grubich, these revised textures enrich realism by simulating a heavily used flight deck, complete with worn surfaces and naturally evolving gauge replacements.

Enhanced Flight Deck Textures

This version applies profound updates to nearly every cockpit surface, yielding a distinctive WWII-inspired environment. The Flying Fortress airframe, known for its four Wright R-1820 radial engines and historically proven resilience during its service, pairs seamlessly with these upgrades. Intricate details include faded nomenclature on cockpit labels, scuffed throttle levers, and a Power Setting chart decal added to the central console, reflecting references from real-world B-17 photographs. Furthermore, lighting textures receive a makeover to ensure immersive night operations.

Instrument Variations

In many vintage bombers, cockpit gauges are replaced or refurbished over time, leading to a mix of dials in different conditions. This texture set recreates that realistic variation by introducing older yellowed instruments alongside newer replacements, highlighting each unit’s unique service history. Employing Accu-Sim features, the set draws attention to the nuances of weathered materials like chipped paint, scratched glass, and marks from frequent crew interaction.

Installation Notes

1. Prepare a Backup
Before proceeding, locate the existing texture folder in your WOP2_b17g directory (for instance, texture.heaven sent) and create a safe copy outside the simulator.
2. Insert the New Files
Make sure to copy all 16 texture files from the provided “cocpit” folder into the target texture folder. Confirm overwrites for a complete replacement of old files.
3. Verify Installation
Launch Microsoft Flight Simulator X and load your chosen B-17 repaints. Inspect the cockpit to ensure the worn finishes, labeled panels, and improved gauge textures are properly displayed.
4. Restoration (If Needed)
To revert to your original textures, simply copy the backup folder back into the aircraft’s directory, overwriting all newly added files.

Key Observations for Users

When implementing these textures, it is crucial to confirm that all existing cockpit texture files are replaced. If the update seems partial, ensure that any conflicting files in individual bomber repaint folders have been overwritten. Keeping a secondary copy of your original files allows an effortless rollback if you prefer the default look.
