This repaint presents a faithful rendition of Autair's Airspeed Ambassador G-ALZZ and brings a touch of classic British airline history into Microsoft Flight Simulator X. It includes historically accurate markings, distinctive silver propeller spinners, and a carefully recreated gray nose cone inspired by the aircraft’s appearance at Luton in May 1965. Created by Peter Watkins, this freeware add-on requires Rob Richardson’s Airspeed Ambassador Mk2 base package, which is also freeware and accessible in the Fly Away Simulation file library.
Aircraft Background and Technical Highlights
The Airspeed Ambassador series was initially designed as a twin-piston engine, short-to-medium-range airliner, offering pressurized comfort for post-war travel. G-ALZZ, bearing construction number 5222, was originally delivered to British European Airways in April 1950, receiving the name “Edmund Spenser.” Later on, this same airframe changed hands to Globe Air, flew under the Swiss registration of HB-IEL, and afterward entered service with AUTAIR in August 1963. The Ambassador’s airframe featured a high-wing design and sturdy landing gear, ensuring reliable operations across regional routes.
Significant Service Details
- Delivery to BEA: Entered British European Airways service, emphasizing the growing need for pressurized cabin flights in Europe.
- Globe Air Tenure: Re-registered as HB-IEL in Switzerland, reflecting the aircraft’s versatile operational capacity.
- AUTAIR Operations: By May 1965, it sported a distinctive silver-and-gray look, representative of AUTAIR’s livery approach at the time.
- Retirement: Followed continuous service until permanent withdrawal from the flight line in April 1969.
Repaint Features and Visual Fidelity
This livery captures G-ALZZ’s classic AUTAIR color scheme as observed in 1965. The design includes the polished propeller hubs, gray nose section, and meticulous markings that mirror period photographs. The fuselage textures are enhanced to display subtle shading and panel lines, complementing the vintage feel of the Ambassador. These textures fit seamlessly onto Rob Richardson’s Airspeed Ambassador Mk2 model, ensuring the aircraft’s iconic silhouette remains visually precise.
Installation Notes (Base Model Required)
To install this repaint accurately in your simulator, you will need to first place the Rob Richardson Airspeed Ambassador Mk2, which is also available as a freeware package. Its solid flight dynamics remain a cornerstone for those who value an authentic piston-engined simulation experience. Once the base Ambassador is installed, simply drop the repaint textures into the appropriate folder following the included instructions, which detail all necessary configuration file entries. After installation, you will be able to load up G-ALZZ in FSX with its historically correct paint scheme.
