FSX New River Gorge Bridge Scenery

The New River Gorge Bridge scenery recreates West Virginia’s iconic 3,000-foot span near Fayetteville, positioned close to New River Gorge Airfield (WV32) for dramatic low-level canyon flying. Built for FSX with accurate proportions and clean, texture-free coloring, it adds a striking landmark and recognizable VFR reference point.

The New River Gorge Bridge - FSX

Some time ago, I ran across a post in a forum from someone looking for the NRG Bridge for FSX. So, I got out my modeling tools and got to workfrom drawings found via a GOOGLE Search.

The New River Gorge Bridge spans the New River Gorge (of course) near Fayetteville,WV in the Appalachian Mountains. It is very near the New River Gorge airfield (WV32). The bridge spans the gorge for just over 3000 Ft with a bed of 68 Ft in width. The bedis also some 850 feet above the river. The bridge opened in 1977 and until 2004 it was the highest vehicular bridge in the world. In 2005, the structure was immortalized when the US Mint issued the West Virginia state quarter with the bridge depicted on one side.

Installation

The bridge consists of a single .bgl file in a zip file.

If you already have Addon Scenery for West Virginia, you need only to place the .bgl file in the Scenery folder of that scenery package.

You can install the bridge in its own scenery folder by making a suitably named folder in the FSX Addon Scenery folder. Inside of that folder, make two additional folders called Scenery and Texture. Place the .bgl file inside of the Scenery folder.

Either method above will require you to either load the scenery as a new scenery area, or update the existing WV scenery if you place the file there.

Tools Used

  • Abacus FSDS V3.5 to build and compile the model
  • Airport Design Editor (ADE) by Scruffy Duck for placement and alignment.

This file was built by me as freeware for anyone that wishes to use it. You may distribute as you wish, but it is to remain as freeware for the enjoyment og the Flight Simulation Community.

Compatibility

I see no reason why this should not work in FS2004 (FS9) as there are no special textures. as a matter of fact there are no textures at all. all coloring was done within the FSDS modelling software.

How to install this mod

FSX / P3D scenery
  1. Extract the downloaded archive

Use 7-Zip (free) or WinRAR to extract the ZIP to a temporary folder. Don't install while still zipped — the simulator can't read inside ZIP files.
  2. Place scenery in Addon Scenery

Create a folder under FSX\Addon Scenery\ containing scenery and texture sub-folders.
  3. Activate in Scenery Library

In FSX, go to Settings → Scenery Library → Add Area. Higher priority means it overrides lower entries for the same location.
  4. Always read the included readme

Every mod ships with a readme.txt or README file. It tells you exactly where files go, what dependencies are needed, and any quirks specific to this add-on.
