This freeware repaint package depicts a JetBlue-inspired livery applied to the McDonnell Douglas DC-9-20, intended for use with the Historic Jetliners Group (HJG) DC-9 base model. The textures were meticulously crafted by Tom Tiedman, and they come prepared with optional smoke system entries for those who wish to enhance their engine effects in Microsoft Flight Simulator X. Although JetBlue primarily operates modern Airbus and Embraer fleets, this distinctive repaint allows flight simulation enthusiasts to enjoy a creative homage to JetBlue’s branding on the classic DC-9 airframe.

Highlighted Visual Details

The McDonnell Douglas DC-9 airframe exemplifies a short-range passenger aircraft originating from the 1960s era. It has been adapted here to carry JetBlue’s contemporary color scheme. The fuselage art, tail design, and aesthetic elements capture the airline’s recognizable style. Thanks to the precise work of Tom Tiedman and the Historic Jetliners Group (HJG), cockpit windows and external lines align properly with the DC-9’s fuselage structure, maintaining an authentic look even with this fictional livery.

Key Technical Inclusions

  • Optional Smoke Effects – Includes FSX-specific [SMOKESYSTEM] coordinates for realistic JT8D engine exhaust.
  • Accurate Texture Mapping – Cabin fuselage curves and vertical stabilizer fonts align with existing DC-9 geometry.
  • Standby for User-Configured Panel/Sound – Requires swapping in your own FSX panel and sound setups.

Preparing Your Aircraft Folder

  1. Copy the texture.Jet Blue N688JB folder directly into the existing DC-9-20 directory. Make sure this directory is the HJG DC-9-20 base pack (JT8D-11 v1.13).
  2. Open the aircraft.cfg file in your DC-9-20 folder, then insert the following [fltsim.X] data. Remember to replace “X” with the next consecutive numeral in your aircraft listing.
  3. For FSX, supply your own preferred panel and sound folders, ensuring compatibility with Microsoft Flight Simulator X. Rename or replace the default folders if necessary.
  4. Locate the repaint entry under “McDonnell Douglas” within your simulator’s aircraft selection menu.
  5. Optionally, add the updated engine smoke system entries below. If you choose to do so, remove the original [SMOKESYSTEM] section entirely to prevent duplication.

Remember the Base Pack

This repaint depends on the freeware DC-9 series developed by Historic Jetliners Group. You can find the necessary base model in the Fly Away Simulation library. Once installed, the JetBlue scheme will become selectable alongside any existing DC-9-20 variations you might already have.

About the McDonnell Douglas DC-9 Family

The DC-9 series represents a pivotal stage in commercial aviation, featuring easily maintainable JT8D engines and compatibility with shorter runways. Although it dates back several decades, it remains an important reference point in aircraft evolution. With these custom textures, this iconic design is reimagined under JetBlue’s branding—giving sim pilots an opportunity to fly a unique combination of modern airline flair on a historic frame.
