Editorial

Although I’ve stated in the past my heavy dislike of all things military, the pilot in me can’t help but love the amazing work that goes into creating these monstrosities. Although they are never used for acts of good, the power of aircraft that are built for military purposes is something that is truly immense.

Preview screenshot

They blow away most of their civilian counterparts and in truth have created a whole new way for us to look at aviation in general. When installing this Tornado package I felt a mix of comfort and fear about what I would be coming across here; was I going to really enjoy being in such a powerful piece of kit?

My Thoughts

The answer was yes. First off, I was blown away by how accurate the inside of the aircraft is. I spent plenty of time comparing it to images and videos and found that it was more or less spot on, give or take the limitations that FS2004 provides it with.

That being said, the attention to detail for a simulator which is more than a decade old was brilliant; it really done a great job of capturing the depth and detail of the real thing, and putting it all in place in the most magnificent setting possible.

I was a huge fan of this kind of aircraft (it’s reasons for existence aside of course) so I was interested to see how well it would handle itself in the skies. It was very impressive in terms of the way that it flew, giving me expert handling and precision when dealing with everything from taking off to handling tight turns when I flew a little too close to terrain.

Best of all, though – for those who appreciate violence – was the depth of detail of the weaponry that has been added to this model. Version 3.2 of this mod gave me access to better lighting but also the chance to control the firepower of the aircraft. Guns and bombs can be used via the joystick and add another nice little layer of realism to the design.

A Fresh Change

Whilst I’m not really one for flying around and bombing places, it sure felt fun to play something like this and get to grips with the sheer power behind every bomb dropped and shot fired.

The attention to detail was one thing that really caught me in terms of the design, but the precision of performance is arguably every bit as impressive, too. It’s catchy and manages to give you that feeling of true power from the cockpit, without being difficult to fly.

Whilst I’m sure it’s real life counterpart is a fair bit harder to learn and scarier to engage with than the simulation makes out, it made jumping from civilian aircraft to military hardware much easier for me.

If you are a fan of this kind of aircraft project and want to see the true might of what military aviation tends to involve, then this package details it in the most beautiful manner possible.
