This custom texture set presents a fictional United States Navy low-visibility rendition of the Embraer A-29B Super Tucano. Created by Paul Barry, it draws upon Tim Conrad’s freeware base model. Designed to integrate seamlessly with Microsoft Flight Simulator X, this comprehensive repaint brings a distinctive naval flavor to an already capable turboprop trainer and light-attack aircraft.

Naval Influence on the A-29B Airframe

The real-world A-29B Super Tucano, developed by the Brazilian manufacturer Embraer, has garnered international acclaim for its reliability, agility, and effectiveness in training and counterinsurgency missions. In this fictional adaptation, Paul Barry’s livery highlights a subdued, low-visibility scheme reminiscent of modern USN paint standards. Its low-contrast stenciling, toned-down national insignia, and gray camouflage cues echo the understated appearance that is typical of many contemporary naval platforms.

Key Technical Details

Base Model Requirement
You will need Tim Conrad’s freeware A-29B Super Tucano model, available in the Fly Away Simulation file library. The repaint here does not include the original aircraft files.
Visual Highlights
The low-vis texture set offers subtle shading across the fuselage and wings, along with carefully placed USN markings that capture the realism of modern US warplanes.

Texture Setup and Integration

Once you’ve acquired Tim Conrad’s A-29B files, you can follow the steps below to implement the USN low-visibility repaint within your simulator setup. These steps assume a standard FSX directory structure and familiarity with the aircraft configuration.

Preparation for Installation

  • Extract the downloaded repaint package to a convenient location on your computer.
  • Within your main simulator folder (commonly located in “...\Microsoft Flight Simulator X\SimObjects\Airplanes”), locate the A-29B directory.
  • Create a backup copy of your existing aircraft.cfg file for safe keeping.

Adding the Low-Vis Texture Folder

  1. Copy the folder named texture.usnlv into the A-29B aircraft folder. The path should look like:
    ...\Microsoft Flight Simulator X\SimObjects\Airplanes\A-29B\texture.usnlv
  2. Use a text editor (e.g., Notepad) to open the original aircraft.cfg file within the A-29B folder.
  3. Below the last [fltsim.X] entry, paste the following snippet. Ensure you replace “XX” with the next available number in sequence:
[fltsim.XX]
title=A-29B_USNlowvis
sim=A-29B
model=
panel=
sound=
texture=usnlv
kb_checklists=
kb_reference=

description=
atc_heavy=0
atc_id_font=Verdana,-11,1,600,0
ui_createdby="Piglet's Peculiar Planes"
visual_damage=1

Save and close the updated aircraft.cfg file. Your A-29B with the new naval paint scheme should now be ready for use in the simulator.

When loaded, this fictional layout portrays a stealthy, training-oriented design that suits demo flights or strategic practice runs in Microsoft Flight Simulator X. Paul Barry’s adaptation, alongside Tim Conrad’s original modeling, ensures an immersive experience for turboprop enthusiasts interested in modern naval paint schemes.
