Editorial

The “Little Bird” was an aircraft that I had intended to try out for some time. Since recently upgrading my hardware to make FSX run even better, I decided to give this mod a try. It was made very well from what I was told, and decided it was time to evaluate for myself.

So, what did I find?

Installation

First off, the installation is a simple thing to manage. Start off by making sure that you have unzipped all of the files, including the New Plane folder. Inside this folder you should have six unzipped files waiting for you. The New Plane folder, that contains all six, should be put in your SimObjectsAirplanes path.

It’s easy to find – usually in your Program FilesMicrosoft GamesMicrosoft Flight Simulator X folder. Once in there, you simply drop in the New Plane file and it should all work just fine for you. Just make sure that you use the default Helo Panel for the gauges, otherwise you can run into some problems.

Usage

Now, the usage is something I truly enjoyed. Installation was easy enough, but the actual performance is pretty awesome. It’s a wonderful take on the aircraft, taking real precision and care when it comes to realism. The developers went that extra mile to make sure that this take on the OH 6A feels as authentic as it should.

As part of the Special Operations Aviation Regiment, or SOAR, this is an aircraft that means business. As soon as I got behind the cockpit I could feel that – it’s powerful, and got plenty f features. Since this provides variable support to special forces, it obviously has to carry a fair amount of power on it.

This means that you’ll be flying a chopper made perfect for anything from reconnaissance flights to full-on warfare. It’s a very powerful aircraft and this mod does a good job of capturing that raw power for you.

Also, inside you get a great document that delivers the true history of the Night Stalkers, the 16th SOAR group.

The developer here, Mark Rooks, has done well to make sure that you get an aircraft that feels authentic. I was very impressed with the work put into the performance and the way that the aircraft handles itself. It feels easy to manage, but challenging enough that it’s a rewarding piece of kit to fly – definitely worth trying out.
